Add in my recommendation for building your own. I made one with some
old aluminum Radio Shack "ground wire" that I had laying around. Follow
the calculator for radius and spacing as best you can, but don't sweat
over the super fine detail. Helix antennas are inherently forgiving in
construction, and are nice that they are circularly polarized which
helps when working a spinning satellite. Both traits are in contrast to
building a Yagi beam.

Anything inside the helix is invisible to the antenna; I used an
aluminum rod, and heavy zip ties out to the wire turns. Tie one end
around the central support, then use another (smaller one) to attach the
wire to the "tail" of the first. Don't need to support every turn; just
use enough to keep things kind of in place.

I'm going to take the contrarian viewpoint (again). A LNA in your shack
is not going to do you justice if you've already set the noise figure
with a long, expensive, attenuator.

160' of LMR600UF = ~$320

80' loss @ 150 = 0.8dB
80' loss @ 450 = 1.3dB

Let's add in 0.5dB of loss for various connectors, and the best you can
do is something like a NF of 1.8dB at 2m, and about 2dB up at 70cm. So
much for that fancy 0.5dB NF preamp, right?

Why not spend that money on a _good_ or _cheap_ (pick one) LNA,
RG-8X/RG-213 at half the price, and add some power to overcome cable
loss in the shack? Good grounding goes a long way to protecting your
LNA, which should be off during storms.

A preamp (LNA) belongs at the antenna, not in your rig. That is, unless
you've attached the rig directly to your antenna. :-)

This is what I use. For $35, hard to beat. I have no clue about its
performance except that I have no difficulty using it to check in on a local
1296 ssb net and to work most every L Band AO92 pass. It is mounted on my
2M12 az/el boom.

For the VHF/UHF contest in September, there will be a group active
locally...and running 1.2 GHz!

Since L-band is active on AO-92, and I have the equipment - but no
antenna - I'm looking for an L--band antenna that I can use both
terrestrially and for the birds.

My preference is for M^2, but both yagis on their website are a little
larger than what I'm looking for - but they are still under consideration.

Does anyone have recommendations for another brand, or have an appropriate
one for sale? (I wish I had bought some of those loop yagis which were
prominently displayed in Ball Arena at Hamvention in the early 90s...)

(I'll be at Shelby NC Hamfest this Saturday (mostly at the AMSAT info
table), in case someone is attending who has one and wants to bring it .)

Thanks

I would like to extend my gracious thanks to Keith Baker (KB1SF/VA3KSF) and
his wife Kathryn (KB1OGF/VA3OGF) for chatting me up during the Tokyo Ham
Fair this past weekend, where they had set up a booth promoting the next
Dayton Hamvention.

https://i.imgur.com/Po65neI.jpg

As the former president and current treasurer of AMSAT, Mr. Baker was
tickled that I had on my Fox-1A T-shirt (that I wore specifically for the
occasion), and that spawned a great conversation about the current state of
amateur satellites -- he pointed out that it was the move to the
now-ubiquitous "cubesat" form factor that resulted in a Cambrian Explosion
of satellite development. We also chatted about each other's backgrounds,
and I got to interpret for some other interested Japanese attendees who had
come over.

Mr and Mrs Baker are both charming people and I hope they are here next
year for the 2019 event as well!

Philip,

Look here, These were under consideration by me until I came into a M2 23
element Yagi for $40.00.

Reasonably priced and looks pretty simple to Assemble:

I'll also add in my recommendation to build.? For 2018 Field Day, I built
a Kent Britain WA5JVB 1296 MHz Cheap Yagi.? The plans can be found in the
PDF document https://www.wa5vjb.com/yagi-pdf/cheapyagi.pdf.? It was easy
to construct, if you are careful.? Without tuning, I was able to get a
1.25 SWR on transmit frequency for AO-92 in L/v mode.? I was able to make
two successful QSOs during the one decent pass, for my location on Field
Day that AO-92 was in L/v mode.? Unfortunately, that pass occurred before
Field Day officially started.? Anyway, I felt validated that the antenna
worked!? Give it a try!

Hi all,

Something's up with http://www1.findu.com/cgi-bin/pcsat.cgi webpage?
Looks like it's returning PCSAT2 data from several years ago.

Gary,

Thanks for the info on the TS-790 but I will look for something newer.

It's too bad that they don't make many special purpose VHF radios anymore.

IC-9700 is just that, but it is not on the market yet...
<rant>
While it is looks to be a great radio, there is a sore lack of portable, I
would put the IC-9700 in the lug-able category, VHF/UHF all mode radios.
The only radio on the market in the portable all mode VHF/UHF is the
FT-818; unless there is something that I do not know about. The FT-857,
IC-9100, IC-7100, etc.. are also lug-able radio. Not to mention the 818 is
near $800 USD, that is hard bill to swallow when you are interested in 2
bands that it covers.

One wonders what it would take from engineering perspective to build a
5-25w all mode VHF/UFH radio... Not a 100% sure if 25w would be enough for
the VHF/UHF contesters to power transverters/amplifiers, but it would be an
additional market outside of satellite operation.
</rant>

Sorry for the rant, but it seemed somewhat on topic.

Icom has a new one in design, some stores are taking prepayment on it for
over a year now. Still haven't seen a price on it. It is the ICOM
IC-9700. I am holding out for it, unless Yaesu gets to the market with

Don,

The challenge (unless things have changed from the 817) is it is not full

for the downlink but then you need a computer. It is tough nut to crack.
