Hello All,
?? This is probably? a windows issue but I'm curious if anyone else has
seen it. I'm running windows 8.1? and about once a week or maybe two SDX
will stop responding, closing satpc32 fails to kill it and I have to go
in and manually kill it, I have tried many different serial ports
usb/hard from the pc to the rotor controller,? a different controller,
running satpc32 as admin, running it in compatibility mode for win 7 was
the only thing that "maybe" slowed it down a little.

Have I missed something? anyone else see SDX? stop responding?

Thanks

I'm recovering from a hard disk crash and lost all of my current SatPC32
various.SQF files. I did a Google search for Doppler.SQF and the most
recent I could find was something posted in 2015.

Does anyone know where a current copy of Doppler.SQF (with today's
satellites in it) can be downloaded?

Would save a lot of time. Thanks in advance.

I just wanted to let everyone know who contacted me this past week while
we were in the Eastern Sierra that I am in the process of uploading my
contacts to LoTW and QRZ.com as N6REK/P.? Since I have recordings of 7
satellite passes, it may take me a few days, but I will get them logged.
Thanks to all of you with whom I had a QSO and also to those I couldn't
quite reach. It was a fun trip, fishing was lousy, but I made up for it
bagging a good number of contacts on the satellites.

.Is it the White House or a ploy by NIST, in their budget,? to list it
as an item to defund so that they can keep their conference money?
Having worked for the government, you list a high cost line item to
defund, knowing that public outcry will not let it happen and you keep
your pet project funds.

I have already signed the petition, even though iit is a NIST proposal
and not a White House proposal.

To be clear, NIST did not propose the cuts in a vacuum. They are a response
to the budget allocation they get from the executive branch. The allocation
is lower than what their current budget is, so they have to cut something. I
suspect that NIST allocated budget cuts to the various departments and when
the Fundamental Measurement, Quantum Science and Measurement Dissemination
group received its cut allocation it prioritized its programs and the
WWV/WWVH/WWVB programs fell below the line. Most of us that have been
involved in hard budget decisions know the drill. Something ugly usually
happens. In essence, the proposed budget allocations are forcing NIST to
take a poison pill.

In context, the overall federal budget proposed is increased. The cuts in
WWV/WWVH/WWVB go to expenditures elsewhere by the government. Each
individual needs to determine whether the expenditures elsewhere in the
government are more important to them than the WWV/WWVH/WWVB cuts. To me,
the lower priority given to science and technology in the 2019 proposed
budget, evidenced in part by the NIST cuts, is disturbing. I fear that in
time it will flow to other programs, including NASA, that are important to us.

At the risk of introducing politics into what should be an apolitical AMSAT
BBS, sending your elected representatives a post card declaring how you feel
about this issue and what you want them to do about it is as important, or
more important, than signing the petition. But, the ballot box is a longer
term solution to the problem. Register to vote in November and vote for
candidates that will support federal expenditures on science and technology.
Encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to do the same.

Hi everyone.

Does anyone know a cost effective way of measuring VSWR or reflected power
at 2.4GHz ?

I'm building a 70cm to S band upconverter with 25 Watts output.
Before I connect it to my dish feed, it would be nice to know that the match
is reasonably close to 50 ohms.
It would be nice for the PA transistor to last more than 1 QSO

2.4G inserts for bird watt meters are few and far between.....I wonder if
the one that covers 400M to 1GHz would work.?

David,

Try building the surface-mount version at the bottom of this page:

They don't need (or tolerate) much power, but they are cheap to build!

Nonsense !

It was clearly pointed out in the ARRL Letter of 8-22-18:

"According to the NIST Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 budget request, the specific
cut would come from the NIST Fundamental Measurement, Quantum Science, and
Measurement Dissemination budget and would amount to $6.3 million.
"NIST has a long-standing history of providing time and frequency services
through our radio stations and we appreciate that many people use these
services," NIST said in a statement. "WWV is the longest continuously
operating radio service in the US. At the same time, the proposed NIST
budget for FY 2019 required difficult choices about budget priorities."
NIST said that it plans to eliminate "efforts that have been replaced by
newer technologies, measurement science research that lies outside NIST's
core mission space, and programs that can no longer be supported due to
facility deterioration."

The decision has NOTHING to do with the White House (aka Trump Bashing)

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB), which is part of the
Executive Office of the President, works very closely with the
agencies on their budget requests. The request is technically the
agency's, but it is heavily influenced by the White House.

Everyone:
For years I used Heath GC-1000 Most Accurate Clocks which contained WWV
receivers and displayed the received time on a clock.

Having sold these GC-1000s, I now use a computer-based solution (available
for Mac or Windows).

I hope this alternative solution option helps you also.. Very 73,

Hi Folks,

Following JoAnne's advice, I found 3 entries for AO-91 in GPredict for
Windows.
One was 5 minutes fast, one was 5 minutes slow and the 3rd one was correct.
The correct one is the 3rd one down on the menu.
If anyone else is having problems, then that is the one to check.

Terry Osborne ZL2BAC

Hi JoAnne and everyone,

Thanks for that.
Yes I had two entries for AO-91. One with last years keps that I had
selected and one with current keps that I hadn't selected.
Putting the correct entry in fixed the problem and Nova now agrees with
Orbitron.

I usually go outside and catch AO-91 with a hand held + yagi.
When using Nova, I had to wait about an extra 5 minutes for AOS and LOS was
about 5 minutes later than predicted.
I actually like Nova, just a personal preference really.

Terry Osborne ZL2BAC

I've noticed a bit of sneakiness tracking AO-91 with Nova. I find I'm
several minutes off once or twice a year. The main symptom is a weak
downlink from AO-91 since the antenna is aimed at a spot in the sky which is
not on time.

What I've found is somehow Nova has 2 or 3 instances of AO-91 in the table
where you choose the satellites to add to the tracking view. None of the
other satellites have multiple instances. What I need to do is to select
each instance of AO-91 and keep only the one that accurately matches the
other resources you can compare with.

Subject: [amsat-bb] Upcoming ARISS contact with Mendez Fundamental
Intermediate School, Santa Ana, CA
Message-ID: <813F644D9B794253BAC3A4BEE9D186BC@???>
Content-Type: text/plain;	charset="iso-8859-1"

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with
participants at Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School, Santa Ana, CA on 06
Sept. The event is scheduled to begin at approximately 16:49 UTC. The
duration of the contact is approximately 9 minutes and 30 seconds. The
contact will be direct between NA1SS and AA6TB. The contact should be
audible over the state of California, U.S.A and adjacent areas. Interested
parties are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is
expected to be conducted in English.

Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School, opened in 2000, is named in honor
and recognition of Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez who fought for equal
education for the all children. In 1945, with several other families they
filed a lawsuit entitled Mendez V. Westminster, asking the court to issue an
injunction ordering the integration of their school district. The lawsuit
argued that segregation based on national origin violated the United States
Constitution. On April 14, 1947, the 9th Circuit US Court of Appeals ruled
in favor of the plaintiffs. The court ordered all school districts in
California to desegregate allowing the Mendez children to attend previously
all-white schools. Eight years after Mendez V. Westminster, Brown V Board
of Education ended "separate but equal" education throughout the United
States. However, it was the Mendez case that set the precedent for
desegregating schools based upon race. Because of their bravery and
dedication, Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez opened th
e door for a better education not only for children in California, but for
children throughout the United States. In 2010, their daughter, Sylvia
Mendez was awarded the Medal of Freedom for continuing the work started by
her parents, ensuring that all students have equal access to a quality
education.

Mendez is a public school of choice, located in Santa Ana, a high-density
city in Southern California. Mendez serves over 1400 students in grades 6-8
and students enroll through a lottery system. 98% of our students are
Hispanic and 20% are English Learners. Our students participate in a robust
STEM program including classes and clubs focusing on computer science,
mechanical engineering, robotics, and rocketry. Our students have
participated in many NASA and space related activities due to the personal
interest and dedication of our teachers. For the past 5 years, student teams
have participated in the Team America Rocketry Challenge. In 2017 two of our
teachers flew aboard the Sophia and in 2016, we sent an experiment to the
ISS as part of the Student Space Flights Experiments Program Mission 8. The
Mendez flight experiment researched the question, "Does microgravity affect
the water absorption of hyaluronic acid?" Most recently, we received a grant
from ISS Above for tracking hardw
are/ software and curriculum. All of our students are enjoying these
lessons as we prepare for our ARISS event.

Our students and staff are so grateful for this opportunity. At Mendez, our
mission is to continue the work started by the Mendez family by providing
our students with a rich array of opportunities, which spark curiosity, lead
to deeper learning and open the door to future possibilities.

Thank you for spending some of your time with us.

Participants will ask as many of the following questions as time allows:

1. How is using a ham radio on the ISS different than operating one on Earth?

2. I was wondering if any of the current crew members are artists and if
yes, how is it different from doing art on Earth?

3. How is it determined which astronaut conducts which experiments and can
you choose which experiments to work on?

4. How does your research on salmonella in microgravity relate to life on
Earth?

5. What do you do during your free time and how much free time do you have?

6. How do you deal with the lack of privacy on the ISS?

7. What is something you forgot to bring or wish you'd brought with you on
this mission?

8. I'm always losing stuff. Have you ever lost something on the Space Station?

9. How has your time living on the ISS affected the way you live on Earth?

10. I want to be an astronaut when I grow up. What advice can you give me?

11. What is the thing you miss most while on the Space Station?

12. Our school sent up a student space flights experiment in 2016. Are you
currently working on any student experiments?

13. How has your time in microgravity affected your coordination and vision?
Have you noticed any lasting changes?

14. Do you ever get to contact your family? If yes, how?

15. What has been your biggest "AH HA!" moment? (What has surprised you the
most?)

16. How did teaching in a classroom prepare you for doing science on the ISS?

17. How do your eyes adjust to the constant change from daylight to darkness
as you circle the Earth?

18. Will you continue your exercise regime when you get back to Earth?

19. Do you ever feel nauseous when you are in space? What do you do if you
get sick?

20. When you are sleeping on the ISS, what do you hear?

About ARISS:

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is a cooperative
venture of international amateur radio societies and the space agencies that
support the International Space Station (ISS). In the United States,
sponsors are the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), the American
Radio Relay League (ARRL), the Center for the Advancement of Science in
Space (CASIS) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The primary goal of ARISS is to promote exploration of science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) topics by organizing scheduled contacts
via amateur radio between crew members aboard the ISS and students in
classrooms or informal education venues. With the help of experienced
amateur radio volunteers, ISS crews speak directly with large audiences in a
variety of public forums. Before and during these radio contacts, students,
teachers, parents, and communities learn about space, space technologies,
and amateur radio. For more informa
 tion, see www.ariss.org, www.amsat.org, and www.arrl.org.

Thank you & 73,
