Hi Eli,

The XW series of satellites have linear transponders and are accessible
with SSB (or CW). You may be able to hear the beacons to an extent with
your HT, but I wouldn't expect much more. But generally you'll need SSB
gear to get on the linear sats. Additionally, the XWs aren't used nearly as
much as the FM sats or more popular SSB sats like FO-29 and AO-7, but it's
definitely not hard to find a QSO on them.

Firstly, the XWs are SSB/CW birds and would be pretty much unreadable on FM.

Secondly, the SSB portion of the XWs is pretty unused, however their CW
beacons are loud with a vertical, and should be very loud with a beam and a
SSB/CW radio.

Thirdly, when you start listening to XWs with a SSB/CW radio, you'll find
the Doppler shift in SSB/CW is very real, compared to FM, but is a whole lot
of fun !

Hope that helps.

Eli,
Glad you are having good luck with the FM birds. Hope to catch you on one
of them. The XW birds are all SSB linear transponders. Your FM HT won't
work for those. You will need all mode tranceivers to work those.

I see beacons from these two aprs digipeating sats, but I am unsure what
the Via field is to be used in order for packets to be digipeated.

For PSAT and ISS, I use ARISS and it works fine. I don't see a similar
response from either of these other two birds.

I'm a bit uneasy about using a generic field like WIDE1-1.

BTW:

*Is there a generic via path I can use that will encompass (work for), both
the ARISS birds and these two birds from Bhutan and Maylaysia?*

It would be nice, while puttering around the shack, and all of a sudden
hearing packet activity on 145.825, to be able to jump on the keyboard and
begin packeting without having to alter the Via path.

Data captured from yesterday:

Fm BIRDBT To APTT4 Via WIDE1-1 <UI pid=F0 Len=50 >[01:15:59]
HELLO! THIS IS APRS-DIGIPEATER OF BHUTAN-1 CUBESAT

Fm BIRDMY To APTT4 Via WIDE1-1 <UI pid=F0 Len=50 >[01:22:09]
HELLO! THIS IS APRS-DIGIPEATER OF UiTMSAT-1 CUBESAT

I didn't see any digipeated packets from anyone from either of these two
sats. Perhaps their digipeaters are not active? (I did read on-line that at
least one of them was supposed to be active, but it was old news and I've
been out of the loop)

Setup:

UISS/UT7HO (Soundmodem) > Kenwood G-707 > Arrow J-Pole @ 15' (Rx and Tx) .
This station is on 24x7 monitoring, and tx's when I have time. N0AN-10

Direwolf (Win10) > VBAudio > SDRPlay RSP2 > M2 Eggbeater @ 7' (Rx only
Igate) . This station (N0AN-6) is active only when I'm not using the
Eggbeater and SDRC Console/SDRPlay RSP2 for other satellite activities.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Has anyone installed the 9100 PAT V panadapter board described here...

https://kd2c.com/pat-v-9100

If so have you installed it with the newly documented higher gain tap points
for VHF and UHF....

https://img1.wsimg.com/blobby/go/539f6433-783a-448b-b978-2cb9dd19e2d3/download

When Dave KD2C came out with the original board with the low gain tap point
I found that it wasn?t acceptable for satellite use. Now I see he has higher
gain tap points for UHF and VHF. In a few days, after L/V Sunday I?m going
to open up my 9100 and redo the tap points.

I could not find the earlier note about 91 or 92 receive problem, but I
just remembered that I had trouble with 91 a few weeks ago and discovered
that a network camera that I had observing my antenna was generating a
strong signal right on the AO-91 downlink frequency. Ferrites on the CAT5
helped some, but not enough. So until I can examine it more, I power the
camera off when I'm working 91.

I found it using an HT and just noticed the squelch breaking as I tuned
over the frequency. From then on it just used the HT as a probe. Narrowed
it down to the network, and then had to do some unplugging to find the
actual culprit.

I have repeatedly tried every combination of:

CQ, APTT4, or APRS

-via-

ARISS, BIRDBT, BIRDMY, BIRD-PH, JG6YKL, JG6YKM, JG6YKN, APRS, or WIDE1-1

... without any evidence of digipeater activity. Included in those
attempts I have used doppler tracking on the uplink and at other times just
set on 145.825 without tuning. All via a 50w radio w/ an AZ-EL tracked
directional gain antenna. I have also replaced properly formatted payload
messages w/ the plain text non-APRS formatted message style used in their
beacons without success.

I use HRD Sat., SatPC32 and Amsat Droid.
SatPC32 and Amsat Droid agree on position of FM birds, HRD shows some birds
30 min. earlier than expected. Mainly, AO-91 and AO-85. Anyone else noticed
this tracking error ?
I have "poured" thru ALL HRD's settings, reloaded keps, etc. Nothing seems
to correct this tracking anomaly. Grrrrr.

Interesting. I ran into a similar problem but with SO-50. I mounted a GoPro
to the boom of my arrow and worked an AO-85 pass and everything seemed fine.
I then had a fairly shallow pass of SO-50 and could barley make out
anything, I quickly detached it and moved it away and I could hear the bird
just fine.

You may want to look into shielded CAT-6, I hear this helps.
