Hi Scott,
to me it seems that the current Celestrak file amateur.txt is faulty and
doesn't contain Keplerian data.

I download the Celestrak files noaa.txt and amateur.txt directly into
my browser.
To do so I opened Celestrak.SQF (SatPC32 menu "?", "Auxiliary Files")
and copied the Celestrak addresses for noaa.txt and amateur.txt into the
address line of my browser. The data of noaa.txt was displayed
normally, with amateur.txt I got a blank sheet.

There is a copy of amateur.txt in the folder SatPC32_DataBackup (sub
folder Kepler). The path to that folder is the same as the path of the
data folder SatPC32, see footline of menu "Satellites". But the copy is
an older file, of course.

Went to tweak the azimuth rotor position and now can't get it to park
properly. Elevation is fine. It is 30 degree off in park. Help.

Park is essential since the tower tilts down on a trailer.

What did I do wrong?

Jim,

The problem is caused by overload of the RX preamp, and possibly front end
of the 70 cm rig. You will
still have the (same) preamp, and the converter has its own front end. So
no, that will not likely do
any good. Getting as much separation between the antennas, a good preamp,
using the mode-J filter
which Drew mentioned, and running minimum power are your best bets. With a
good mode-J filter, SSB
preamp, and 10' between the uplink and down link antennas, I can run 50
watts TX and barely hear any
hiss. If you are using linear antennas, using different orientation between
TX and RX will give you a
few more dB of isolation.

People do use your suggested arrangement with a TS-2000 to avoid the
downlink birdie on SO-50.

While we are working on the equipment matrix how about available
antennas? I can only think of the ones from M2 and Arrow. Who else
makes them and which are rotor mounted and which handheld?

Hi All,

FUNcube-1 was commanded to continuous amateur transponder mode at approx
2301 UTC this evening.

We will keep this mode until around the same time tomorrow Sunday when the
normal autonomous switching between the telemetry and amateur modes will be
restarted

Clint,

Thank you for your positive contribution to this discussion thread with
your question. As you know, the list of radios currently in production
that support full-duplex operation on FM satellites (going from KE9V's
original message) would be short. If we limit the list to those able to
work SO-50 full-duplex, transmitting on 2m while simultaneously
receiving on 70cm, there is one HT:

Kenwood TH-D72A

a few dual-band FM mobile radios:

Yaesu: FT-8800, FT-8900 (I haven't tried the newer FTM-350/400 yet)

Kenwood: TM-D710, TM-V71

Icom: IC-2730A, IC-2820H (I haven't tried the ID-5100 yet, and Icom
America still lists the IC-2820H - a radio I use on FM satellites)

Alinco: DR-635 (I haven't tried the DR-638 yet)

and the two satellite-ready base transceivers:

Icom IC-9100
Kenwood TS-2000

This doesn't include using two radios to make a station capable of
full-duplex operation on SO-50. I have not tried any of the 2m/70cm
FM mobile transceivers that are coming from China, and - as far as
I know - I have not seen any reports of those radios being able to
work SO-50 full-duplex.

Not all of the rigs listed in other posts are "20-year-old ancient rigs",
as you characterized them. Some came on the amateur market after
1995, but yes - they are no longer in production. Since many of these
radios are still considered good performers on SO-50, why not include
them in the discussion?

Andrew KE5GDB took a stab at compiling a list back in 2009. His
web site no longer has that page, but the Wayback Machine cached
a copy of it from back then:

http://web.archive.org/web/20090724094403/http://www.thathamkid.com/website/ha
m-radio/full-duplex-radios

Other radios, in particular HTs like the Wouxun KG-UV8D in current
production, and many others like newer versions of the Icom IC-W32A
that have gone out of production, should work fine with the upcoming
Fox-1 satellites that use a 70cm uplink and 2m downlink - reversing
the uplink and downlink bands as used with SO-50.

I can give [bad] references on the Baofeng UV-5R HT...

On receive with some as simple as a moxon on top of the HT the SO-50 is
clear and loud as long your hand can turn to match polarization.

But, as soon you key the PTT on ANY rig on 2m near this tiny HT goes
overloaded, no matter if you use a diplexer or a LPF with at least 30dB
att. on 70cm...

But, maybe on Fox sat series...

I feel I need to make this clear... to others not to put his "eggs on
that basket"

Hi!

I was at the Scottsdale Amateur Radio Club's "Springfest" hamfest
this morning, with an AMSAT table. This is one of the larger hamfests
around the Phoenix area in the unofficial hamfest "season" - basically,
anytime that isn't summertime. :-) After a light rain last night in parts
of the Phoenix area, the weather was perfect this morning, and there
was a great turnout. As with most hamfests around Arizona, this one
started before sunrise, and wrapped up by midday.

Satellite passes were not the best for the hamfest this morning. I was
able to do some demonstrations early - FO-29 around 6am (1300
UTC), and SO-50 an hour later. I made one QSO on the FO-29 pass,
with Yuri UT1FG/MM (as did many others on that pass). On SO-50,
seven QSOs went in the log. The ISS pass around 1600 UTC was
a good one - I could see my packets being retransmitted, but no
QSOs were logged. Thanks to everyone who worked WD9EWK
during those passes - especially to UT1FG/MM, whose unique call
is nice to hear during the demonstrations. These QSOs have been
uploaded to Logbook of the World, and - as I do with any of these
events - I would be happy to send you a QSL card to confirm our
QSO. Please e-mail me directly with the QSO details, so I can check
that against my log. If you're in the log, I'll send out a card - no SASE
needed.

Being able to talk up the upcoming Fox-1 series of satellites has been
a very good thing. The Fox project has been around since late 2009, but
there is more interest from the ham community when launch dates can
be given, instead of "in the future" or "real soon now". I was even able
to talk about my portable SDR setup using a USB dongle (both the
FUNcube Dongle Pro+ and the cheaper "RTL-SDR" dongles) and the
smaller Windows 8.1 tablets. One ham couldn't believe that the small
tablets could do this, so I set up one of my Windows 8.1 tablets (the
WinBook TW800, which has been retailing at $79) and the FUNcube
dongle (it works well as the receiver when working our satellites) to
prove the point. The ham already had an RTL-SDR dongle, and said
he was going to order the tablet.

That's it for this morning's hamfest. I will be at another hamfest next
Saturday morning in Tucson AZ, complete with an AMSAT table and
hoping to do more demonstrations for the hamfest crowd there.

Hola Pavel!

Thanks for your post. I did not mention any of the Chinese-made
HTs like the Baofeng UV-5R earlier, since they are not capable of
full-duplex operation on SO-50. Unfortunately, not all UV-5Rs are
the same. I have used one of mine as the downlink receiver, when
connected through a diplexer to my Elk log periodic. I have
transmitted with another UV-5R, a Baofeng UV-82, and even a
Wouxun KG-UV8D.

Last year, I did a demonstration on SO-50 using two Baofeng HTs
(UV-82 for the uplink, UV-5R for the downlink) connected to a
diplexer and my Elk antenna. This worked OK, and I made the
satellite audio into a slideshow video I posted on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cLx9h-vNRA

I have not tried any of my Baofeng or Wouxun HTs with an Arrow
Yagi, or a homebrew equivalent of that Yagi.

I know a friend who has ordered the new AnyTone Termn-8R
2m/70cm FM HT, which is being promoted as capable of full-
duplex operation. It may be like the Wouxun KG-UV8D, which
has been promoted the same way, but cannot work full-duplex
with the weak SO-50 downlink. I hope to get a chance to try
that new AnyTone radio soon, to see if it does any better on
SO-50 than the KG-UV8D.

Buen fin de semana, y 73!
