Hello,
I am redoing my antenna system. I will be putting up a 2MCP14, 436CP30, a
small camera and some kind of 1.2 beam. Anyone using the
M2 FGCB60 Heavy Duty Fiberglass Crossboom Kit. How do you like it? Any
other options? When I get it should I coat it with anything to weather proof
it. The sun is bad in south Florida. Hi Hi

I don't have the M2 kit but many many years ago I installed 2 6' FG booms,
from HRO, butted together and have been happy with them. I moved from the
beach to the "mountains" and noticed they became covered in lichen. I
cleaned them thoroughly and painted them with silver paint. No problems
noted in the past year. But the lichen is persistent, on everything. =|8^{

Mike,

The M2 FGCB60 Heavy Duty Fiberglass Crossboom is well constructed. I own
two of them, one of which was on my tower for many years. You won't go
wrong by buying one. (I bought the second one as part of a package of used
satellite gear.)

Coating the fiberglass isn't a bad idea. After 15-20 years of Indiana
weather, mine is showing some surface deterioration.

Here's an alternative: I'm currently using a crossboom that is square,
instead of round. That makes it easier for me to keep the antennas pointing
in the same direction. When the antennas slip a little on a round crossboom
due to wind or ice loading, coax tugging on the end of the antenna, or less
than perfect balance, the tendency is for the antennas to point a little
above or below each other, or for the whole array to point above or below
the horizon when the rotor elevation is zero.

I built my crossboom with an 1-inch square aluminum tube, two-feet long,
clamped inside a Yaesu G5500 elevation rotor. I then added two pieces of
1.25-inch square fiberglass booms that slide over the ends of the aluminum
tube. You can purchase the square fiberglass tubes from Max-Gain Systems,
www.mgs4u.com.

Good luck with the new antenna array.

73, Steve N9IP

P.S. If anyone wants one of my weathered M2 FGCB60 crossbooms at a really
good price, I could bring it to the Dayton/Xenia Hamvention for delivery.
The purchase price will be donated to AMSAT.

I use a 1.25" diameter 8' long solid fiberglass rod from Max-Gain Systems
for the crossboom in my G-5500 rotator. I cut a short section of PVC pipe
lengthwise into two pieces to go over the fiberglass rod (in addition to
self-adhesive safety walk material stuck on the fiberglass rod for friction
with the PVC pipe) for the part that is inside the rotator boom housing. I
hope that's an understandable description!

I spray-painted the entire fiberglass rod with white epoxy appliance paint
before mounting my 2m, 70cm, and 23cm antennas. Seems to be holding up ok
so far.

Mike,

I have one. Mostly good, but some bad. From a strength standpoint, it does
a good job. The metal center section makes it easy to clamp it without
having it either compress the tubing or having it slip. It will handle any
likely set of antennas.

The bad, and suprising, is that after it was up for 4 years here in
Tennessee, I noticed some "glitter" under the array on the roof. The
protective coating had spalled off, leaving the very itchy fiberglass
exposed. For now, when I work on it I use gloves and a long sleeve shirt.
At some point, I will probably paint some sealer, but that will require
mostly removing all the antennas and cables.

I talked with a local marine dealer, not a big market in Tennessee, who said
there were special paints to seal fiberglass. Ironically, according to him
it requires special preparation to paint fiberglass in good condition, but
much less if the coating is missing or damaged. I would definitely check
with a marine dealer there.

Previously, I used a fiberglass tube with a large round wooden rod to
reenforce it. That was significantly shorter, but lasted 15+ years.

Alan

As part of my flea-market space, I included some AMSAT info - an actual
size cardboard model of a cubesat, a copy of the AMSAT Journal, a copy of
"Getting Started with Amateur Satellites", the Fox Operating Guide (and
another document I prepared which tells which frequencies to receive the FM
birds and how to track them, along with some online resources).

The thing which got the most attention was my fully assembled Arrow
antenna - and I could have sold at least 5 of them had I had any to sell!
:-) Most of the questions I fielded were about QO-100.

>From this, I have been tentatively invited to give "Satellite 101"
presentations at least 2 ham clubs, and possibly a third, (I think I've
done about 8 similar presentations over the past 18 months.)

This wasn't a full-blown AMSAT only information table like at some hamfests
(John KG4AKV and I are doing one (and he's planning to do demos) at the
Raleigh Hamfest April 20) with some merchandise from the AMSAT online
store; it was a last minute idea since I had some extra space on the table.

As an added bonus, it was *completely* unexpected to see Barry WD4ASW
there, and get to talk to him for a few minutes both days. I also got to
meet Andy N4LAZ, who is fairly new to both ham radio and satellites, and
has put EM95 on the air on a fairly regular basis.

My fiberglass boom also started to splinter after being up about 10 years.
When I re did my sat array at that time I used gelcoat to coat the raw
Fiberglas boom. It goes on as thick as you want, and sets up quickly. Also
paint it black, it will last longer in the sun. Another input on this
subject is you can buy fiberglas rod in lengths up to 12 foot or so. I
picked my 12 footer up somewhere in PA years ago as at that length it wasn't
shippable by normal means. A lot cheaper to buy it that way. My 2m, 70cm
large size KLM's, 55 L 1.2 gig, and a 4 foot dish mounted very nicely on the
12 foot boom. The good old days... ?

Pics and article on my blog but I'm posting the text inline below for
your convenience.

https://spacecomms.wordpress.com/2019/03/10/i-just-met-a-french-qo-100-operato
r/

Unbelievable. I just had lunch with a French QO-100 satellite
operator. His name is Alexendre.
He is in my area for work for the weekend. I was driving to Waffle
House for some food when I heard him identify as W4/F5USF on the
146.64 RARS repeater. Intrigued by a French station over here, I
responded to his call and he said he was out looking for lunch too. He
also said he was in South West Raleigh which is where I live and where
I was! I asked him how long he was going to be here as I was busy this
afternoon and he said he was leaving tomorrow so I figured I should
meet up with him since he wasn?t going to be in the US that long.

We met at a Jason?s Deli and when he asked me what my ham radio
interests were I told him satellite. He said he used to work sats like
AO-7 but recently had been working QO-100. He apologized that we
didn?t have a GEO sat over here. Haha.

At lunch he told me all about his QRP QO-100 setup. It?s only strong
enough to work CW, but he is working on getting more power so he can
do SSB. He has a degree in microwave engineering so when I told him I
honestly didn?t understand a lot of the concepts related to running a
QO-100 station he started teaching me about mixing signals to get 2.4
GHz, LOs, RFs, how to get stable reference signals without GPS, etc.
Very interesting.

I showed him some of the satellite gear I had in my car and he snapped
a picture of me with it to show his friends.

Before we left I gave him some Space Comms, SatNOGS and Libre Space
stickers. He is also a SOTA op and that is what he has the FT-817 for.
He plans to activate a SOTA summit before he leaves the US.

73, John Brier KG4AKV

P.S. Within the next hour or two I?m going to do a livestream on
YouTube updating on the progress of my satellite ground station build.
