Trying to become active on APRS/packet on the satellites using my Kenwood
TM-D710. A couple of questions:

1.) Anyone know why the ISS digipeater hasn?t been active for the past
several days?

2.) Is there any easy way to switch the path and other settings between
FalconSat3 and ISS/NO-84? I?d love to work both, but don?t do a lot of APRS
operating so switching between them isn?t easy for me.

Anyone else using the TM-D710 who could share some tips on best operating
practices?

The ISS digipeater has been unreliable in the last couple of years.
Firstly, it is turned off whenever there is a special event happening on
the space station (space walks, re-supplies, etc). Secondly, the packet
module and radio are really old, and we've been seeing erratic behavior
from the pair (sometimes it's not on at all, sometimes it's on but weak,
sometimes it's deaf, etc.). There is a fancy new ARISS transceiver
slated to go up to the station soon, and we all hope that will remedy the
situation. Of course, sending a few bucks to ARISS can't hurt that
timeline. :)

Regarding the switch between the 1200 and 9600 packet sats - there is no
easy way. I also use a D710 and it would be nice if you could select a
"profile" to swap in all of the path, modem speed, and duplex options - but
to my knowledge this is not possible. If you are connected via KISS
serial connection, you could automate this - but I'm not sure if there are
any software packages out there that would do that - at least without
having to manually change all the values via individual KISS commands
(which doesn't seem to be any better than using the built-in D710 UI).

Yes, it is easy to maintain multiple profiles in the D710. One for
Falconsat and one for ISS/NO84, etc

Just program one PM memory for normal operation
Then one for Falconsat at 9600 using the path of PFS3-1, and then another
one for ISS/APRS/NO84 using the path VIA ARISS

Then operations of any are only one PM push button away.

But you must change the menu item AUTO-PM-STORE to OFF, or otherwise the PM
will NOT remember the basic settings but will auto-save-anything you do and
so you never know for sure what is in there. I always thoguth it strange
that the default for AUTO-PM-SAVE defaults to ON which defeats the whole
purpose (in my opinion) of having PM memories in the first plave.

Funny, when I first got my D710 I looked into doing just that, but could've
sworn that all the "important" info was not part of what could be stored in
PMs. After looking at the manual again, I note that the list of
parameters they show under the PM title say "below parameters CANNOT be
stored in a PM". DUH! I must have originally read it as "can" and
ignored the whole section due to no parameters of value being listed.

So...... much.... wasted.... time! Thanks, Bob!!!!

Moving off my 30 year old TNC due to poor data performance. The old DSP2232
has done it's job. I'm now in the middle of setting up a software based
modem system using my IC-9100, EasyTerm, and HS_SoundModem. The data D/L
performance really blows away the hardware based modem. This somewhat
surprises me as 20 years ago, we as a group did simultaneous d/l tests
using S/W and H/W modems, and at the time the hardware was far superior. The
S/W modems and CPU's driving them have come a long way.
Anyway what my problem is, how to activate PTT with this setup. I had this
working a few years ago, but forgot what I did. Where I'm at now, I'm using
vspMgr to try and split the IC-9100's PTT serial port, but no joy. Do I need
to split the port? Or use VOX? Any one get this working? Thanks...

Some have modified the rig. See, for example,

Another solution is a little Windows utility program by ND0B called
ICOMkeyer.exe

Hi Hans,

If you have a plenty of RG213 and suitable connectors, you could try making
a Coax stub filter.
You need a cable length that is an odd multiple of a quarter wave length
long at the FM Tx frequency
and an even multiple of a quarter wave at the frequency that you want (2M
/70CMs).
A single RG213 stub would have about 25dB of rejection and would pass 100
Watts OK.
You just need a coax T connector and some matching connectors.
To trim the stub, use a set of garden secateurs.
If you have a Bao feng or similar radio you could use that on the FM band
attached to your T and trim
the stub for minimum signal on the unwanted Tx frequency.

I haven't run the calculations for how long the stub should be but if it's
useful I could do so.

Terry Osborne ZL2BAC

Subject: [amsat-bb] Shoppinglist

My sis-in-law will be visiting from the States soon and I usually make
her bring some stuff for me so I can save on freight costs. She will
definitely bring an Arrow Antenna so I can start some portable
operations. A Sony voice recorder is also on my list, as well as some
coax cable (RG-400 is what I'm thinking of. Really expensive here).
Don't have a budget for much more, but since I have a clear
line-of-sight to some 10 kW FM transmitters from my QTH I thought I
should at least get a good FM-band notch filter.

Any recommendations on where to buy this in the US? I haven't found
anything when I googled, not even a lot of 2/70 band pass filters, or
low pass filters to prevent desensing on 70 cm. My own creations have a
too high insertion loss, so this time I really want something a bit more
professional and something that can handle at least 100 Watts of power.
Any recommendations are welcome. Cheers. --Hans BX2ABT
