That is the expected behavior of the status page, otherwise it would
quickly clog with satellites no one is listening for.

I used Flyby to run the prediction that appeared in ANS. Flyby is a modern
and more fully-featured fork of PREDICT for Linux that I find very useful.
I?m looking forward to seeing when that timer triggers the mode change and
maybe making a few Mode A QSOs during this period.

Flyby can be found at https://github.com/la1k/flyby. It can be installed on
Arch Linux and derivatives using the flyby-git package in the Arch User
Repository. Users of other distributions will have to build it manually.

On the most recent pass of AO-92 a few minutes ago (over EM79), I heard
some stations replying to calls by saying only "QSL, 73". I would like
to respectfully remind folks that that kind of reply isn't very helpful.
Who are you replying to? What is your call sign? What grid are you in?

Could be that these folks are new to satellites and were a tad nervous.
We've all been there.

Please, when you are replying to someone calling you, reply with the
other station's callsign, your callsign, and your gridsquare. This is
the full exchange that completes a QSO.

Here is a cut and paste from the "Fox Operating Guide 2019":

* Listen for others
* Listen for yourself using full-duplex operating
technique "W4ABC" (make sure you have
your 67.0 Hz CTCSS switched on!)
* You hear "K9XYZ"
* You say "K9XYZ W4ABC EM74"
* You hear "W4ABC K9XYZ QSL EN52"
* You say "K9XYZ W4ABC QSL 73"
* Please do not call "CQ Satellite" on the FM
birds

I very much welcome all to the wonderful world of ham radio satellites.
But, you can make sure that your QSOs count for you and your contact by
following the best practices.

Hear, hear!

Another one has been N0PQR calling K9XYZ (or W4ABC) before the other
station was able to respond / finish the original QSO.

Wait your turn and try to let QSO's finish.

An International Space Station school contact has been planned with
participants at S.M. Calvino - Istituto Comprensivo Settimo IV, Settimo
Torinese, Italy, direct via IK1SLD and Istituto Comprensivo Statale Don
Milani, Monza, Italy on 14 Oct. The event is scheduled to begin at
approximately 09:37 UTC. The duration of the contact is approximately 9
minutes and 30 seconds. The contact will be direct between IR0ISS from the
ISS and ground stations IK1SLD at Settimo Torinese and IQ2MZ at Monza. The
contact should be audible over Italy and adjacent areas. Interested parties
are invited to listen in on the 145.80 MHz downlink. The contact is expected
to be conducted in Italian.

Watch for live stream from the Monza side of the contact at
www.arimonza.it/youtube .

Stories:

S.M. Calvino - Istituto Comprensivo Settimo IV

The comprehensive institute Settimo IV consists of a kindergarten, two
primary schools and a secondary school. It is one of the four scholastic
poles of Settimo Torinese, a small town just outside Turin, which is a
metropolitan city in northern Italy. The city of Settimo in the past years
was just a suburban city of Turin that simply hosted the working class
families of the big city but it has in recent years aspired to become an
exceptional cultural center. Thanks also to the activities of the new
multimedia library, designed to be an innovative cultural and informative
center, a qualified reference point for information, research and
documentation in the scientific area, as well as a center at the forefront
of experimentation and use of new technologies.

The Calvino secondary school is the secondary school of I.C. Settimo IV and
welcomes about 200 pupils aged between 11 and 14 years mainly from the area
adjacent to the new library with which it actively collaborates with
cultural and scientific projects.

Istituto Comprensivo Statale Don Milani

The Don Milani Educational Institute has 3 Elementary Schools (pupils aged
5-10) and 1 Middle School (pupils aged 10-14). The Educational Institute has
a student population of 1075 pupils divided in different school complex.

About ARISS

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) is a cooperative
venture of international amateur radio societies and the space agencies that
support the International Space Station (ISS). In the United States,
sponsors are the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT), the American
Radio Relay League (ARRL), the ISS National Lab and National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA). The primary goal of ARISS is to promote
exploration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
topics by organizing scheduled contacts via amateur radio between crew
members aboard the ISS and students in classrooms or public forms. Before
and during these radio contacts, students, educators, parents, and
communities learn about space, space technologies, and amateur radio. For
more information, see www.ariss.org.

Hello all, I just wanted everybody to know, that on ao-91, When it comes
up the slot from south, there usually Costa Rica, Panama,Guatamala,And
on the 9th there was St Barthelemy island! There is only a few min
window for the southern states! It would be nice if those dx locations
had chance to work more U.S stations. The pass on the 9th was at
18:02z. Just letting everyone know there is dx to the south! tnx. Tom.

Wow, St. Barts is quite a rare one! There have been only two
activations of it on satellite since it became a separate DXCC in, I
believe 2007. Did you get a callsign?

I think the last operation was our FJ/N0KV operation in April of 2018.?
WD0E doing the sat operation.

St. Barts is very expensive to get to and stay at.? It's "the playground
of the rich and famous".? Multi million dollar yachts in the harbor even
in off season.? Most of the island is rental or lease villas, some for
as much as $10,000 a night.? Our group found one that was sort of
reasonable (the Linn Villa). The bonus was about a 1/4 acre with low
bushes we could set up HF antennas in.? Very unusual to find that much
property at a villa.

We went to lunch in Gustava one and only one day. Nice bar on a
beautiful beach in a cove.? $45 for a cold sandwich, frys and a beer.

At that time some of the buildings were still boarded up from the 2017
hurricane that devastated Sint Maarten and other islands. From what I
can see St. Barts is pretty much back to normal.? Too much tourist money
to be made.

Craziest airport in the world, or at least near the top.? Lots of videos
of flight operation there available online.? There are also live webcams
around the island including the airport.? We took the ferry because we
were lugging Pelican cases of equipment but I'm not sure I would have
flown anyway.

So enjoy the contacts there. Folks who go are spending significant time
and money to activate it.

NPR just reported that Soviet/Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov has died at the
age of 85.

He was the first human to perform an EVA in 1965, beating American astronaut
Ed White by a few weeks. He was also the commander of the Soviet half of the
Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. Although it was kept a secret for many years, he
had been in training for a moon landing if the N-1 rocket had not failed in
1969.

Like several other space travelers, he took up painting in his retirement so
that he could convey some of what he saw on his space missions.

Leonov and American astronaut David Scott wrote a dual memoir covering the
history of the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union, "Two
Sides of the Moon: Our Story of the Cold War Space Race". Highly recommend
that you get a copy of this book.

I met him once in Washington DC at a space conference. He said that America
and Russia had always had a joint space program, because each country's
program needed the other one to survive.

There?s not much land but it contains the city of Santa Cruz, CA.
Great city. Great beaches.

Or, is there a sat operator there that might make a sked?
