There is a video of the contact too. Contact gets started at about 3:41:

https://www.facebook.com/WestPointUSMA/videos/734993083640986/

I have to admit, it was hard watching them struggle to make the
initial contact while Drew was calling them for the first few minutes.

But I loved it when Drew realized he was talking to someone he knew
(Col. Stephen Hamilton, I believe), and then said "beat Navy."

Does anyone know what elevation/azimuth control system they are using?
The control box looks like a 4U 19" rack mount system. I assume it's a
big commercial rotator.

Bob,

This is a very interesting question. In our VHF contesting mountain top
setting we are running stacked beams with 1 KW amps within 100 feet of each
other. Sometimes makes for challenges in terms of interference but nothing
has gotten blown up.

I would be curious to know what others have found with SDR's for the
downlink. They do seems a little more prone to overload problems. We
routinely struggle with this on Field Day, especially between the 6m and
satellite station. Again nothing gets destroyed but the station to
station interference can be quite severe.

Heard the ISS side of their contact "live" as well & was also worried when
there were so many apparently unanswered calls from Drew.

At least this explains why W2KGY was active the night before when I worked
them on LilacSat-2!

Still here operating from St. Lucia at the Villa Grand Piton just north of
Soufriere in Grid FK93lu. Contact me by e-mail for scheds providing
specific common footprint passes. AO-91, AO-92, AO-07b, CAS-4A, CAS-4B,
XW-2A, and XW-2F have yielded the best results. Note I do have some
limitations due to topography. Low angle passes for Europe and South
America are unlikely,

CQWW starts Saturday Oct. 26th at 0000 UTC (Friday local time) but I will
try to catch some of the weekend passes during the 48 hour contest (on HF
look for J68MD in the contest).

Evening passes on Monday Oct. 28th and morning passes on Tuesday Oct. 29th
before I depart are possible.

For the most current information see my J6/AA4FL page.

Hey Mike!

This one has done well for me:

... and depending on how you're going to use it, I've found that the
following makes it very easy to connect to the various pins:

unavailable, but I'm sure there are other similar models out there)

Here at work I use a Startech ICUSB234858I:
https://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/Serial-Cards-Adapters/usb-rs232-422-48
5-serial-adapter~ICUSB234858I

You probably don't need the RS422/RS485 that it provides in addition to
rs232 but it's a nice box and it has the nice feature that the COM
ports come up in the same order every time, something that I've struggled
with using the single USB to serial adapters.

Anything with an FTDI chip. Nice to have would be TX/RX lights, but not
necessary. Preferably one with a toroid one one side, but those are pretty
rare.

You can roll your own pretty cheaply:
https://www.amazon.com/DSD-TECH-SH-U09C2-Debugging-Programming/
This is an all in one (although missing a toriod):

I?ve used this one, works fine:

Folks, please don't get into an argument on the satellite over who is
hogging the satellite. If you're arguing instead of making contacts,
then you are both hogging the satellite.

Try Facebook if you want to argue about stuff. It's hard enough making
satellite contacts (for me anyway) without a couple of guys getting into
each others stuff and using up valuable pass time.

Hi Bob these questions would be better answered at the TowerTalk group at
contesting.com. When I build my last house I asked many questions about
grounding there. When I was having the house built I actually took into
account, from the ground up(pun intended) a grounding system. Lots of good
knowledgeable people there...

Yes! Unfortunately, I screwed up and lost some of the HD footage, but
they should all be up in a couple of weeks, with a couple of the
sessions in SD.

All of the videos are available in SD from Facebook at
https://www.facebook.com/pg/AMSATNA/videos/ (and this page should be
accessible, Facebook page or not).

The banquet panel session, which was not live streamed, should be up
on YouTube tonight.

The left over prepared flash drives have just sold out. I do have
about 75 more of the drives available, but I will need to write the
files to them, so there will be an additional delay of about 10

Message to US Educators?

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station?

Contact Opportunity?

?

Call for Proposals?

New Proposal Window is October 1, 2019 to November 30, 2019?

?

The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Program is
seeking formal and informal education institutions and organizations,
individually or working together, to host an Amateur Radio contact with a
crew member on board the ISS.? ARISS anticipates that the contact would be
held between July 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. Crew scheduling and ISS
orbits will determine the exact contact dates. To maximize these radio
contact opportunities, ARISS is looking for organizations that will draw
large numbers of participants and integrate the contact into a
well-developed education plan.?

?

The deadline to submit a proposal is November 30, 2019.? Proposal
information and documents can be found at https://www.ariss.org.?

?

The Opportunity?

?

Crew members aboard the International Space Station will participate in
scheduled Amateur Radio contacts. These radio contacts are approximately 10
minutes in length and allow students to interact with the astronauts through
a question-and-answer session.?

?

An ARISS contact is a voice-only communication opportunity via Amateur Radio
between astronauts and cosmonauts aboard the space station and classrooms
and communities. ARISS contacts afford education audiences the opportunity
to learn firsthand from astronauts what it is like to live and work in space
and to learn about space research conducted on the ISS. Students also will
have an opportunity to learn about satellite communication, wireless
technology, and radio science. Because of the nature of human spaceflight
and the complexity of scheduling activities aboard the ISS, organizations
must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate changes in dates and times of
the radio contact.?

?

Amateur Radio organizations around the world with the support of NASA and
space agencies in Russia, Canada, Japan and Europe present educational
organizations with this opportunity. The ham radio organizations' volunteer
efforts provide the equipment and operational support to enable
communication between crew on the ISS and students around the world using
Amateur Radio.??
