Thanks for the terrific explanation of DVB. I am a pedestrian Ham and I
don?t work in the DVB industry, so the plain-language discussion was very
helpful.

Please listen for N4KGL from EM70 on SO-50 Saturday Nov 2nd 1300 UTC. I
will be hand-held portable.

Dennis WA6QKN and I will combine Rapid Deployment Radio (RaDAR), Parks On
The Air (POTA), and Amateur Satellites along with a fun bike ride. All of
this in Wakulla County, Florida. Rapid Deployment Amateur Radio combines
the outdoors, amateur radio, and movement. You are welcome to try RaDAR in
the field or chase us on the radio. Please check https://pota.us/ for our
spots. We will use N4KGL as our callsign. In RaDAR we need at least five
contacts to move to the next location. For bikes, we need to move at least
two kilometers. Our bike rides will be longer to get from park to park.

Our four-hour clock for the challenge will start at 1300 UTC, 9 AM EDT,
with the SO-50 pass at the Wakulla Station Trailhead on the Tallahassee St
Marks Historic Rail Trail (POTA K-3661). We will complete our five contacts
on HF and ride our bikes to Wakulla State Forrest (POTA K-4643). Then
continue the bike ride to Wakulla Springs State Park (POTA K-1862). Our HF
contacts will be CW or SSB on 40, 20, or 17 meters. Please watch for our
spots on https://pota.us/#/

Our rig will be the Elecraft KX2 with the Elecraft KXPA100 amp. I will use
a bike cart to pull the rig and a 30 AH Bioenno battery. The antenna will
be a SOTABeams Band Hopper Link Dipole.

We may continue this pattern beyond four hours to qualify for one of the
RaDAR Awards sponsored by Parks On The Air.

Warthog Award: two RaDAR* transitions at or between entities during a 24
> hour period.
> Rhino Award: three RaDAR* transitions at or between entities during a 24

Rick,
There could be a multiple of reasons why a gridsquare is not awarded for VUCC.
If the QSO is confirmed and the detail specifies a grid, then it usually is
either you already have the grid confirmed or you were outside of your
designated VUCC circle (per YOUR established VUCC Rules).
Sometimes the QSL lists a grid, but it is not awarded and there is a box
next to it.? If this is not an "exotic" grid, chances are you already have
it confirmed.
If no grid is specified in the QSL details, then the other person forgot to
include that information.

My pitch, store and forward tiny images.? The receiver listens on the
receive channel 9600 baud for digital images. It just listens only.
Whenever it receives one with proper headers and without error, it
stores it. Then on the downlink, it cycles through the last 20 or so, or
about however many can be downloaded in an overhead pass. When the 21st
picture comes in, it just throws away the oldest image. I suggest using
.png formatted graphics with a file size limit of 8192 bytes, something
like this?? Enough pixels to be fun, but not so much to get unwieldy.

This would make a fun visual demo to show off amsat/ham radio -- the
satellite would show a cool little slide show from stations around the
world.

I love this idea, Cathryn! I can see a lot of excitement with operators and
clubs sending digital postcard images to each other across the globe!

There was quite a lot of participation in sending SSTV images for AO-85
Experimenters? Wednesday last year, but for that you had to be in the
footprint and receive in real-time. This idea takes that to the next level.

You are very welcome!

There is a lot of unnecessary mystique surrounding digital waveforms and
error correcting codes.

There?s a variety of reasons for this, many of them entirely legitimate.
Things worth doing are rarely easy. Achieving technical performance near
physical limits is definitely worth doing. It?s not a surprise this stuff
can be hard to describe or teach.

However, we as a community are In the best possible position to democratize
and popularize advanced digital waveforms.

Even the most complex protocols and algorithms can be understood and used
by amateurs. Break them down into basic functions, where the purpose and
the execution can be described in clear language.

People like me don?t always accomplish this, but the success and
accessibility of what we?ve been up to over the last couple of years is
proof it can and should be done.

In space communications, there?s additional difficulties. There?s more
gatekeeping and fewer opportunities for deployment when compared to
terrestrial communications. The risk aversion is another impediment. Jan
King spoke to that several times at Symposium this year.

But, there are enormous advantages of things like complex coding,
autonomous receivers, and delay tolerant protocols for deep space
communications.

This is where we should be spending more time and effort.

I just noticed there is a video report about Tony as well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t811YfLrhuY

I must say Tony has the most impressive amateur radio ground station I
have ever seen. The antenna and rotator system alone is amazing. It's
hard to believe it is only powered by car wiper motors though! I guess
gearing helps a lot :-)

accurate timestamp for when the FFT was taken (preferably in UTC, or at
least something that can be mapped to UTC) they could figure out where the
bird was from TLEs later. If they happen to be flying a GPS, even better.
Global heatmap of the 435-438 MHz band might be good info for groups like
IARU for coordination purposes.

More data can't hurt but this has already been done:

These are great ideas and whatever is implemented will be exciting. Please
consider L-band uplink in any design.
