Your issues remind me of a similar problem I had early in my career with
feedback wire resistors in control valves. Same extreme conditions and
quite valuable production loss of it fails. Eventually the feedback sensor
was changed to a LVDT electronic sensor with magnetic position. It does
cost more but you never have to touch it.

I didn't find a supplier, but I did find a datasheet. You can probably find
a replacement from a different manufacturer.

Curiously it is only rated to -10C.

Recently my Windows 10 computer went through an upgrade and ever since then
I cannot get WSJT-X to talk via CAT to my 9700. I've tried the obvious
things like unplugigng the USB cable and plugging it back in again and no
dice. I even reinstalled WSJT-X because I found that HRD was working just
fine. I'm at a loss on this. Any suggestions out there?

Richard,

Two things to check:

   1. After my last Win 10 upgrade the Network type was changed from
Private to Public with all kinds of mischief
   2. Windows security has been deciding a number of different ham apps are
viruses or trojans so check Windows Security quarantine folder to see is
WJT-x has been moved all or in part to that file.

Just a couple of suggestions,

John

I'll keep your note Gary. It is valuable info. I sent for a couple of the
compatible pots based on information from BB users.

When I open the box next I first will check that piece of wire and mod it as
yours. I can then test it while at the bench.

This PM I even swapped the harness from EL to AZ at the rotator and at the
controller. Still the issue there so the pot seems to be misbehaving

I was a 5400 owner, not a 5500 owner, but I suspect they are very
similar. After needing to replace a potentiometer for about the 3rd time I
dug into the problem. I discovered in my situation it was not the
potentiometer failing, but there is a wire soldered to the wiper of the pot,
and soldered to the bottom center of the pot.

This wire flexes every time the pot turns. It likes to break near
where it has been soldered as the heating weakens the wire. It usually
doesn't break cleanly, but becomes intermittent.

Replace it with a little longer very flexible piece of wire. Put a
drop of glue from the solder joint a little way up the wire to make the wire
flex further from the portion that gets heated. I actually made a small loop
to reduce the flexing. I wish I would have taken pictures as this has come
up a lot!

Shame filled self-promotion follows: I did take pictures of my
replacing the controller lights with LEDs. You can see that here:

valuable information. I sent for a couple of the potentiometer (though not
exactly the same as inside the rotator) but compatible ones.

Hello everyone.

I am looking for a compatible, if not the same, potentiometer for Yaesu
G-5500. The AZ is starting to do its dance queen. Flickers between 180-270
and stabilizes after matching SatPC32 target. But swings left at that area
then settles. I have already place some de-oxit on top of it (or better
say, bottom). It helped somewhat but I see the need for replacing it at
some point soon.

I placed a call to Yaesu Tech support and I am waiting on them to call me
back. The person answering the live line though first told me that the
part is not available. So I requested tech support. This system is still
being sold new all over the place and the pot must be available. This same
pot seems to be used in other similar Yaesu rotators, i.e., 5400.

The pot has a number written RA25Y20S B501 083 321 which matches the number
I saw someone who posted a Yaesu receipt of service performed. Yaesu part
number is S8101823

I have seen some on the #Bay that were listed by purchasers as compatible.
I missed the chance to buy the last two:

ntiometer-TOCOS/142936946571

Any help is appreciated.

A very recent Windoze update hosed parts of my computer to the point that I
had to roll it back to a previous Restore Point and then bypass the update
and go directory to a newer version of Win 10. I'm still finding issues
with all of that 3 weeks later! Microsoft screwed us all with forced

Jack,

3F is the code for a 67Hz tone, so for 141.3 it should be different. Even
without a subtone the sat can be accessed.
Probably you are just using a 67Hz subtone because that also works.

Hi,
as far as I see the code for the FT-847 for a 141.3 sub tone is hex 08
(p. 93 of the user manual) , for the TS-2000 it is dec. 22.
Therefore the entry in SubTone.SQF for a 141.3 sub tone for Icom radios,
Yaesu FT-847 and Kenwood TS-2000 should be:
PO-101,141.3,$08,22

Approximately two weeks ago, I ordered the book written by Steve Ford,
WB8IMY, "Amateur Radio Satellites? for Beginners" so as to complimentmy
library of books on Ham Radio. USPS has terribly failed to deliver my book
and their posting is not updated daily. Last update I received on
their web site was April 27th and now, this morning it is May 2nd with NO
updates. I noticed that USPS delivery trucks making deliveries with
evenlarger packages then the book. I have no idea when I will receive it.
Looks like I will wait another week and then just cancel my order. It took
me over
two weeks to receive an antenna from HRO Milwaukee. I was thinking about
purchasing the IC-9700 for the SATS and 2M/70 cm repeaters. Now
I have my doubts as to when I would ever receive it and in what condition it
may be in when delivered. I was thinking about driving to Milwaukee to
it curb side during this virus crisis, but that is a seven hour one way
drive from my QTH. No wonder the wife keeps asking when will I give up the
hobby.Totally frustrated...Jerry.....W8RQM

Jeff and other,

I cannot stay on the side about this one.

These kind of issue happen to me also, many times.

Also, I wish to share following as it may help many, also save them the cost
of a new PC (I did buy another one)

I have been using a dedicated HP I5 laptop for about 4 years solely for the
HAM station, no Office, e-mails etc..., and have been doing regular
housekeeping such as defrag etc..

Along the years it was slower and slower. I tried everything such as
cleaning up, check for virus etc.. and for the past few months it was often
reaching 100% processor load when running SatPC32 and HDSDR. Fed-up I bought
a new PC but also decided to re-initialise everything re-install W10 and all
the software I use on the old one.

The result is astonishing now running SatPC32, HDSDR, FoxTelem, FUNcube
Dashboard, Soundmodems, Online forwarder, BktTime etc? simultaneously and
the processor load is generally <30%.

Seems that these updates (very often breaking things) are also adding other
issues and slowing down the machine over time. I am not an IT guy and have
no clue about the real reasons just guessing that all these updates are the
cause, may be someone can explain.

I feel your pain. I've been waiting for a USPS package since late March.
It's been lost twice according to the sender. It sat at the sender's PO
for 2 weeks until they found it.

Maybe you should take a better look at the AMSAT website. At the very top
of the page, it says:

> Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AMSAT office is closed until further
notice.

There is a link for further information. If you click on that link, part of
what it says is:

> While the office is closed, AMSAT will continue to accept new and renewal
memberships. However, membership packets will not be mailed until the office
reopens. T-shirts, hats, and other items stocked in the office will also not
be available until the office reopens.

Everybody is having shipping issues for a couple reasons. First is that
whoever is shipping may be operating with reduced capacity (or not operating
at all - as is the case with the AMSAT office), and secondly because so many
stores are closed, the volume of packages that the various shipping
companies have had to carry has gone WAY up. According to our regular UPS
driver that comes to my work, this is making the Christmas rush seem small.

I also have ordered a bunch of stuff in the last few weeks. Some has been
delivered fairly promptly, and some has been slower than "normal". Heck,
yesterday I received a new drill press a day ahead of the scheduled delivery
(from Amazon).
