If interference is on the Satellite Passband should immediately cease

<I look at it this way.? If all the idiots want to jam the crap out of theFM

I have been studying the QRM patterns. 92 seems to have the most, but also
on Western passes, which would rule out a New England repeater. 91 has it's
share. I believe it is done by a few jammers, who have set out to disrupt.
Malcontents about something, but with enough power to take the sat. repeater
away from someone who is talking. Today, on 92, one person was targeted.
Every time she tried to give her call to complete a contact the "open mic"
began and blocked her transmission. I finally came after her and gave her
call. That must have worked. But its not just the open mic. Its the feedback
squeal that can knock your earphones off and it continues for a while.
That's intentional. I am hoping that in a couple of years, when the SSB
bands get better, the malcontents will go back to SSB. I also believe the
whistlers just have a poor setup and are trying to find themselves on the
bird. Tonight, there was a whistler on SO-50!? Brad KC9UQR

Question: most repeaters are coordinated by a local organization...(not just
the owner of the box)

Would it not be prudent to approach the local coordinating committee? The
recording strongly suggests that the voices are actual hams engaged in 'ham
talk' (as opposed to a taxi !) The recording strongly suggests the source is
a repeater. The ARRL publishes a Repeater Guide. Has anyone searched that
database for a possible conflicting frequency? Also, I get an email from
ARRL every Thursday. Maybe AMSAT honchos could draft a message for ARRL to
include in the weekly ARRL email, outlining the issue and asking for input
from members.

Just thinking out loud..

I wouldn't mix this together with purposeful QRM, which is a separate
problem.

Maybe somone can set something up to record the repeater during satellite
passes so we can prove or disprove it.

This would be a good youtube link to send the W1GLO club as well.

It's really really hot right now, having just went through a few days of

then the transponder back on.

Roy,

Thanks for the audio. In the weeks since this QRM came to light, with the
help of recordings from users, we have found the club whose repeater audio
is being retransmitted over AO-92. I do not believe this to be intentional.
Despite the coincidence of frequencies involved, I also do not believe it
to be a third harmonic. The audio is too clear, the signal is too strong,
and repeaters have too much filtering for that to be happening.

I reached out to the board of directors and the repeater trustees, sent
links to the audio including callsigns and their net ID. I explained that
based on experience that this was likely someone crossbanding into their
repeater with a poor choice of UHF frequency, and we could use their help in
finding the QRM source, and my goal was to educate and remove it, not point
fingers and place blame. The responses ranged from virtual shrugs, to claims
of atmospheric conditions, to "there must be something wrong on the
satellite end." A few suggested going to the repeater site and listening on
UHF while the repeater is active, which is a pretty good idea. Supposedly
they would make announcements about it on their nets.

I haven't given up on getting the club to help us find the QRM, but we may
need some more convincing. I'll send the new recordings and ask again.
Meanwhile, Is there anyone in the Gloucester, MA area that would like to do
a little foxhunting for AMSAT?

Using translate.google.com it appears that Roland captured his PSK31 two-way
PSK31 via the HF to UHF transponder (just what PSAT2 is designed to do via
the Brno transponder)..

What I'd like to see is another station transmitting SSTV at the same time
to see if we can do a 2-way SSTV via the transponder.

My previous emails on the topic were hampered by the need to make sure there
was a PSK31 carrier also in the passband at the same time. Which is hard to
do from one PC and existing software..

BUT!!! The easiest way is for two stations to make a SKED and one transmit
PSK31 and the other transmit SSTV at the same time. That will keep the
transponder up. Then they SWAP after the first successfully SSTV relay and
the other person sends the PSK31 while receiving the SSTV.

Since PSAT2 is full duplex HF up and UHF down, both stations can TX and RX
at the same time and it is easy! No special hardware or software required!

A sked would go like this. The first person simply brings up PSK31 software
and sends CQ SSTV, CQ SSTV continuously asking for an SSTV contact.
Another station, hearing the transponder come up, then Transmits his SSTV
image on the same 10m uplink and both stations can see and hear in real time
both signals.

When the SSTV receiving station (who is TXing the CQ SSTV message) gets an
image, then he changes his MSG to QSL and then he waits for the other
station to drop his SSTV tones and come up on PSK31. This will now hold up
the transponder for the original station to now drop his PSK31 and switch to
transmit his SSTV!

With 40 seconds per image, this will need a good 1.5 minute mutual pass...
for a 2-way SSTV exchange

I believe I have all of the settings for the programs, screenshot at the
above link.
Its nice that dopplerpsk sends the message repeatedly, so I can set that to
go and pay attention the other radio.
We may have to wait for better timed passes (not in the middle of the
night) over the US for stations that would like to sked giving this a try
with mutual footprint of my station in FN20.

I've come back to the hobby and AMSAT after a many years away, and it's
great to see that the passion, interest and fun is still there. Back in
2000 when I turned the station off, email was about the only way to
communicate outside of a local club, so I'm surprised that email still
seems to be about all there is.

For someone not in a club, or not wanting to be part of a club, and without
any known fellow satellite focused operators nearby it can be a challenge
at times to find answers when Google can't help and a simple question to a
person would probably be quite quick.

I've searched back through the archive here to look for real time chat
tools such as IRC, Slack and Discord but these don't appear to have caught
on, but in the spirit of trying to fill a potential gap I've fired up a
Discord server at
https://discord.com/channels/711956593117233254/711956593117233256 Whilst
this does have a voice capability it's mainly text chat, but can have
separate channels for different topics such as antennas, tracking etc and
can have channels for countries to focus on too.

New users will need to create an account which is normal for all Discord
users, and I hope that this server might be of some use to the global AMSAT
community.
