As with most things, it depends on your budget. Windows tablets had quite a
moment a few years ago where you could get a 7? model for under $100 and 8?
models for under $200, but they were ultimately not very good devices and
7? or 8? really doesn?t work well for Windows. 10.1? is really the minimum
screen size to be useful for a Windows device.

Right now there are two choices to consider in the under $500 range at the
10 inch screen size. For the low end, there?s the Chuwi Hi 10x which is
$229 on Amazon. If you don?t want to go with the cheap Chinese brand, your
only choice in that price range is the Microsoft Surface Go 2, which just
came out two weeks ago and starts at $399 for the minimum spec. You may
also find remaining NOS Surface Go 1st generations available for less.

Above $500, there are lots of other choices out there, but they are
overkill if you?re looking for a small device just to take roving.

Any of these will run virtually any amateur radio software, including
SatPC32, without a problem. Note that the Surface Go tablets come with
Windows 10 running in S mode, which restricts software availability to the
Windows Store only. Fortunately, it?s just a quick setting change to take
it out of S mode and get full Windows 10 Home.

When I started setting up to the 145 up 435 down satellites, I experienced
this issue badly. The best solution I found was to use two separate
Diplexer to feed my Arrow on a tripod. I ended up using a triplexer for the
2 meter side and a diplexer for the 70CM side. The dual filtering seems to
clean up all the third harmonic crud. Some folks recommend a 50 Ohm
terminator for unused ports but I most of the time don't use one. I put my
preamps on the inside of the diplexers as filters because the loss is small
on the diplexer and filtering before the preamp will go a long way.
Limiting power is also a help. Most of our linear birds are pretty
sensitive so keeping our transmitters down to a very low transmit output is
best for the satellite

Now the comment was relating to SDR devices for the RX side, depending on
what you have, some of these have very poor RF shielding so that in itself
is a real problem

Hoi,

Instead of putting a diplexer as filter( best is to use 1 per band), if you
have the possibilty to make stuff your own, just 'split' a diplexer by
making an LPF (low pass filter) at the 2m antenne and a HPF ( high pass
filter) at the 70cm antenne. Or find some to buy (MINI CIRCUITS maybe?).
This way you have a filter at both antennas. Mostly a diplexer is used only
on one antenna, while the other diplexer port is closed with a small dummy
load.
Keep in mind the tx-pwr!

Just as another data point - I use an $20 RTL-SDR.com V3 Dongle for the
downlinks on almost all the FM and SSB satellites (yep, the plan was always
to upgrade but it's been working so well that I haven't found a huge need
to spend money on a real SDR or traditional receiver).

I have MFJ 916 diplexers at the mast acting as band pass filters. This
has been working for me on all satellites except for SO-50 and FO-29. I
can get receiver blowout on the 70cm downlink birds (LilacSat-2 and RS-44,
for example) if I am not careful with my usage of my ARR pre-amps (located
at the antennas) or the SDR gain setting, but ultimately I've had good luck
on those. SO-50 and FO-29 don't seem to be workable no matter what
combination of pre-amp and SDR gain setting I use. I haven't had an
opportunity to try out HO-107 yet, so can't comment on my "el cheapo" setup
on that bird. For SO-50 I just use my D710G, and I haven't had much
opportunity to use FO-29 lately anyway.

I just learned that they are no longer making the mast series preamps.
Tragic. Anyone know where I can find an alternative for 70 cm other than
SSB Electronics that I think may only be available from Germany?

Richard,

You can get the SSB preamps from HRO.

I'm building a 70cm and 23cm kit right now. Very nicely put together. You

Neat that they're using the Omrom G2RL-2 relays for switching RF. An
inexpensive solution!

I used the TE HF3 relays in my 70cm design, but they are relatively
expensive to the (not-RF-rated) G2RL-2. I'll have to try the latter on
the next spin!

Hi!

Region 2 of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU-R2) has begun
hosting video workshops covering different facets of amateur radio.
Last Wednesday (20 May), there was a "Satellite Communications 101"
workshop in Spanish hosted by Matias Graino LU9CBL and Guillermo
Guerra OA4/XQ3SA (an AMSAT Ambassador). Their workshop had over 40
attendees from many countries in the Americas via Zoom, along with
others watching a live stream via YouTube. A replay of their
presentation is available at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69D1dJEfGDc

The next IARU-R2 workshop will be another "Satellite Communications
101" presentation, targeting novices to satellite operating - this time
in English. This presentation will take place on Wednesday, 27 May
2020, at 2359 UTC (7.59pm EDT/4.59pm PDT). I am the presenter for this
week's workshop. A link to register for this workshop, and other
upcoming IARU-R2 workshops, is available at:

https://www.iaru-r2.org/en/news-and-events/workshops/

There is a limit on the number of attendees who can participate via
Zoom. If you want to watch the presentation without registering for the
workshop, a live stream will be available from the "IARU - Region 2
Workshops" YouTube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnG2Srz0bsKmTbF2r3YNneQ

A video of Wednesday's workshop will be posted on this YouTube channel
sometime after the conclusion of the workshop.

Thanks, and 73!

I?m not certain yet but I think the used 847 I bought to use at our summer
place has some problems in VHF/UHF. If I?m right does anyone have
recommendations on a repair service, or I?m I better of sending it to Yaesu?

Luciano,

I don't have them installed yet. You can see the specification on the
