My friend KK4MUX was going to try and work the bird so I stepped out
in front of my apartment just to see if he was successful. Didn't hear
him though, but made a pretty good audio recording of the pass
nonetheless even with all the trees and being in a hole basically.

Thanks for the tip, Daryl. I may try that if I can't get SatPC32 talking
through the 2nd Commander CAT port.

I built my webpage in 1996. It stayed mostly the same over all the years
with a few additions here and there. Well, in 2013 I installed WordPress
on the server and it sat. Yesterday, I converted most of the old
webpages over to WordPress. Of course, WordPress blocks all
Java/JavaScript and I have removed my scripts. They can be added but not
recommended in today's world. I also optimized the site for mobile
devices. It should be easier now for me to update the URL's and audio
for the Houston AMSAT Net every week as well as update the AMSAT Awards.

From the OPDX Bulletin 1230 September 7, 2015:

BIRD DISTANCE RECORD! [Possible New Distance Record on the AO-7 Satellite].
Dave, KG5CCI, operating portable on a mountain in Grid EM24UQ worked EA5TT
in Grid IM99SL on September 5th at approximately 1812 UTC on the AO-7
satellite in Mode B (U/V). The distance according to Tiny Locator was
7931km. The high elevation in EM24 made it possible to exceed the theoret-
ical 7900km maximum range for AO-7. AO-7 was launched in 1974 and went
silent in 1981. It came back to life in 2002 and now operates when in
sunlight from its circular 1450km orbit. Congratulations to Dave and
Manuel!

Hey all,

I'm currently on my laptop at a wifi hotspot in the bustling metropolis
of Mena, Arkansas, so please excuse my brevity and any grammatical errors.

Yesterday at 1812UTC I made a scheduled contact with Manuel, EA5TT,
using AO-7 Mode B, from the old US Forest Service Fire Tower on top of
'Rich Mountain' here in extreme western Arkansas. My 10 digit grid
locator was EM24UQ01MU while Manuel is located in IM99SL48CX, in
Valencia, Spain. Using the http://no.nonsense.ee/qth/map.html website
for reference, this equates to 7947.381km which we believe to be a new
record for AO-7 Mode B.

Like several of my extreme low elevation passes I've worked recently, I
captured my side of the QSO on video. The bad news is that the wind on
top of the tower, and limited room to operate meant a noisy audio feed
and a rather awkward camera angle, the good news is our callsign, grid,
and signal exchange was captured and clear. I have trimmed down the
video to just the 70 seconds or so (to expedite the rural upload) of the
contact and posted it to Youtube here:

https://youtu.be/JvbT1PqEHlI

I fully plan on writing a more extensive post when I return from the
holiday weekend, and I will likely make a proper video with commentary
and data as well. I've made some really interesting observations when it
comes to Satellite operating from places with great 'Height Above
Average Terrain' and look forward to sharing this analysis with everyone.

Until then, catch you all on the birds, 73!

September 7 Western USA High Altitude Balloon Flight Includes Repeater
Package

The LSU HASP (High Altitude Student Platform) project expects to make a
launch attempt in the early morning on Monday September 7 around 7:30 AM MDT
(UTC - 6).

This amateur radio payload, featuring a crossband repeater, will be riding a
12 million cubic foot zero pressure balloon lifting about 2000 pounds to an
altitude of about 125,000 ft.

Jack (W7JLC) and Bryan (W7BNW) from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
have installed a cross-band repeater along with the assortment of science
payloads.

Uplink: 145.560 MHZ, 162.2 tone access
Downlink: 445.525 MHz
When crossband is not active, APRS on 445.925 MHz

Launch is from Ft. Sumner NM, and the balloon will drift generally westward.
When it reaches its float alitude of 125,000 ft the radio footprint will be
almost 1000 miles in diameter, reaching roughly from Dallas and San Antonio
to Phoenix and up past Denver to Ft. Collins, and down to Chihuahua in
Mexico. The flight duration is expected to be 15 to 20 hours.

The LSU HASP team and W7JLC and W7BNW invite hams to try the repeater. If
you succeed, please send a report to and want to report back to Jim, N5IB
via n5ib@xxxx.xxx
See http://laspace.lsu.edu/hasp/ for additional details.

[ANS thanks Jim, N5IB for the above information]

Dave,

Congratulations on your long-distance contact with EA5TT! Did you
also have a recording of your contact later in the afternoon with NH6Y
in Hawaii?

You found a sweet spot for these sorts of long-distance contacts. From
Arkansas, you're able to work parts of western Europe and Hawaii. That
is impressive!

I somehow have lost the countdown window on my SatPC32. When I click on the

it on the web, but no answers to either questions. Any thoughts?

Great "look and feel," Bruce, to your new site.

I enjoyed remembering "Frequency" - the movie - too, as we also set up
a table with amateur radio information in Brea for the premier.

I think if you click Setup, Options, and on the left-hand side, tick the box
for "Countd. w. map", then restart SatPC32, you should have the countdown
window again. Then make sure that the "Open Window at Program Start" box is
checked in the countdown window.

Michael,
Maybe something went wrong with the data file that saves the screen
position of the countdown window. The program saves the screen position
in the data file "CountDownPos.SQF" in the DATA folder "SatPC32" for the
configuration #1 and in the sub folders CfgII ... CfgIV for
configurations #2 ... #4.
Therefore try whether the countdown window appears if you change the
configuration (SatPC32 menu "Setup", "Configurations").
If yes, copy a working file into the data folder with the faulty file.
The path to the data folder "SatPC32" is shown in the foot line of menu
"Satellites". The folder "AppData" in the path is hidden by default.
Therefore make first hidden folders and files visible (Windows Explorer
- Tools - Folder Options - View).

This launched and there was some chatter I could hear through its
repeater initially. But in spite of hearing it 40db over on a sat Yagi,
and using 300W into an EME array on the 2 meter uplink, I have not been
able to get into it. It is now (1700Z) hearing a constant stream of
1200 AFSK packet traffic from somewhere and I no longer hear any voice
traffic.

I wonder if this is the correct uplink frequency.
