Good evening!

I'll be staying overnight in Payson, AZ (DM44) next Friday 12/11. I am
planning to work the following SO50 passes during the night:

0226 utc - max elv 5.6?
0403 utc - max elv 74.3?
0545 utc - max elv 14.2

Will try that 5? pass to the east, although, I'm not very familiar with the
local topography.

Follow my Twitter account @xxxxx for updates.

Issue 212 of the AMSAT-UK amateur radio satellite publication OSCAR News was
released on December 9, 2015. E-members can download it via the AMSAT-UK
website. The paper edition is usually posted 2-3 weeks after publication of
the electronic issue.

Upcoming ARISS Commemorative SSTV Event mid to late December
On November 13, 2000 the crew conducted their first ham radio contacts on
ISS and on December 21, 2000 ARISS conducted their first school contact with
the Burbank School in Burbank, Illinois.
An SSTV commemoration of these historic events is tentatively planned for
mid to late December. It is possible that the transmission mode will be P120
instead of the P180 mode used in the past. This would allow for more
pictures to be transmitted per pass.

GOOD morning all:

Hope you are all well and having a great christmas holiday. I just
listened on the 1120L pass of AO85 here in EN91 -- while I didnt hear
voices, I could hear a drop in noise which said to me that I was near
the carrier frequency or something -- SInce I havent messed with
satellites in at least 10 years, I thought that was a pretty good start
-- I have somewhere a plan for a tape measure antenna that should work
for sats, I just need to dig through my files and find it, I am thinking
about setting it up to work from a tripod, and I have 2 HT's which
should work to start with until I can afford a duplexer for my IC706.

That being said, I hope you all have a great MERRY Christmas and hope to
hear you more on the birds

DK3WN notes that PSAT is in full sun and should have enough power for the
next week to support both the PSK31 transponder and APRS digipeating. The
APRS digipeater supports the aliases of ARISS and APRSAT so the same
settings for ISS should work for PSAT.

At this writing, the digi is still off, but will be on as soon as one of the
command stations hits it.

For background: http://aprs.org/psat.html

To see if it has switched from PSAT-1 (no digi) to PSAT callsign see
http://pcsat.aprs.org

When FO-29 passes were around this time a couple of years ago, the passes
were always quite busy. Unfortunately, AO-73 has never drawn quite the same
crowd - perhaps due to it's lower orbit and/or frequency instability.

I won't be home for the evening passes tonight or tomorrow night, but next
week I'll try to get on them.

Anybody still a few short for the 73 on 73 Award could certainly use a QSO

Me too, Jack!

I don't think it is widely known that the transponder is active when the
satellite is in darkness.

I wonder how we could market that a little better?

My personal opinion is that the required frequency offsets have never been
formally published, just the theoretical ones. Someone familiar with
satellite operation isn't going to be looking nearly as far off frequency
as is required to operate through AO-73. I've never seen an offset less
than 8 KHz from published TX values, I've seen it as high as 15 KHz. I've
asked our UK brothers to publish this, but it doesn't seem to be in the
card.

Once you figure out the magic decoder ring setting, and get on frequency,
it is a wonderful bird.

There is no "secret decoder ring" necessary. Simply pick a frequency in
the transponder's passband and tune your uplink to stay on that
frequency. (Tune uplink because it is the higher of the two
frequencies.) You will drift slightly across the transponder but this
has never been a problem even during a busy weekend such as Field Day.

Full computer control works but only if you tweak it during the pass.
This is easily done with SatPC32 and the +/- buttons on your keyboard.
I strongly recommend tuning manually.

AO-73 is a great satellite. It's easy to hear and workable with modest
antennas at very low power.

Currently building a portable station and am interested in trying to
work this bird in the near future. Is the transponder always on or does
it follow a schedule (i.e., only on during the weekends or when in
daylight, etc)?

The transponder is always on while the satellite is in eclipse (in the
winter months, that's all nighttime passes). The ops team almost always
turns it on for the weekends as well, so it's available during weekend
daytime hours as well.

AO-73's transponder normally operates when the satellite is
not in sunlight, and whenever the AO-73 command stations
turn the transponder on all the time (usually during the
weekends and some holidays). The normal schedule is posted
on the FUNcube
web site:

http://funcube.org.uk/

When the command stations put the transponder on all the
time, and then put it back to the normal configuration (on
when the satellite is in darkness),
those items are posted
here on the AMSAT-BB list and also on the @xxxxxxxxx Twitter
feed:

https://twitter.com/FUNcubeUK

You'll probably also see mentions of the active transponder
reported on the AMSAT status page:

As W5PFG mentioned, this is an easy satellite to work with
portable stations. I regularly work it with an FT-817ND for
the uplink, and the downlink is handled either with another
FT-817ND or my SDRplay SDR receiver with an 8-inch Windows
10 tablet running HDSDR. At times on high passes, I can cut
my transmitter power down from 5W to 500mW and still have a
readable signal through the transponder. The uplink frequency
you use will probably change from pass to pass, which is why
the recommendations of using manual control when working this
satellite are good. Since this satellite has a sensitive
uplink receiver, it shouldn't be hard to line yourself up on
the transponder.

73!
