This afternoons pass on the fo29 as it came up the east coast had 3 mobils
on simplex talking to each other. They did not appear to be amateurs. They
all had Strong southern accents. As the bird made its way north, their mobil
flutter disappeared. When the sat was parallel with North and south Carolina
they were were rock solid. They were discussing their location on the
Beltline, which means nothing to me here in Michigan.
They were on 145.950 mhz.Does this make sense to anyone in that area?

Jeff,

You may end up transmitting from the FT-857 and listening
with the IC-706 for AO-73. It was the third generation of
the 706 line, the IC-706Mk2G, which added 70cm to the
other bands it already had (HF, 6m, 2m). Good luck with
your setup, and hopefully you can meet that goal before
the month is out.

Hi!

This morning's trip up to the Sunset Point Rest Area, about 50 miles/80km
north of Phoenix along the I-17 freeway, was a quick trip to help some
operators looking to make a contact with someone in DM34. I was able to
do that, and work a half-dozen passes before coming back to Phoenix to
resume my weekend.

I left the house early this morning, around 6.30am (1330 UTC). After making
a stop for breakfast, and getting around a closure on one of the freeways
looping around Phoenix, I made it to the rest area in about an hour. I was
able to park in the space I hoped to use, the southernmost space at the
rest area, on the highest ground up there. Despite checking my gear several
times last night, I forgot to bring my cable to connect my SDRplay receiver
to a tablet, so I didn't use an SDR receiver for any of today's passes. I
did OK with "normal" radios for the SSB and FM satellites - an Icom
IC-2820H 2m/70cm FM mobile radio for AO-85, and two Yaesu FT-817NDs for
AO-73 and FO-29.

The first pass I attempted was an 11-degree AO-85 pass around 1518 UTC. The
satellite was moving from north to east, and I had great visiblity of the
sky in that direction. In the span of 8 minutes, I logged 14 QSOs from
coast to coast, plus Stefan VE4NSA in Manitoba to add a Canadian contact to
my log. This was the most productive AO-85 pass I've had since its launch.
AO-73 came up a few minutes later, a 4-degree pass that was basically to my
east. I logged 4 QSOs on this pass, not bad for a shallow pass.

A little more than an hour after this, just before 1700 UTC, I had another
pair of passes coming by - a 76-degree AO-85 pass, then a 71-degree AO-73
pass. AO-85 was another productive pass, with 8 stations worked, and 3 more
on the AO-73 pass that overlapped the last few minutes of the AO-85 pass.

The next passes of AO-85 and AO-73 almost overlapped 100%. I decided to go
with AO-85, and worked 3 stations on that 10-degree pass to my west - not
the best direction to work satellites from this location. The AO-73 pass
only went up to a maximum elevation of 7 degrees, another reason I opted
for the AO-85 pass at this time.

My last pass for this quick trip was an FO-29 pass that covered the
continental USA, a 23-degree pass to my east at 1942 UTC. I logged 7 QSOs
on this busy pass.

Whenever I had about an hour or so between passes, I updated my logbook for
those passes from my recordings. Since I had enough time between these
passes, and had time after the FO-29 pass, I went ahead and uploaded the
QSOs to Logbook of the World. I had a good signal from an LTE mobile phone
network at the rest area, so I used my tablet to get these QSOs uploaded.

I posted photos of my radio setups, and of the rest area and the
surroundings, to my @xxxxxx Twitter feed during the time I was up there.
If you don't use Twitter, you can see the photos at this link:

http://twitter.com/WD9EWK/media

or my Twitter feed with all tweets, not just photos, is accessible at:

http://twitter.com/WD9EWK

If you still need DM34 and didn't work me today, I can make plans to go
back to that rest area. It's about 60 miles/100km from my driveway to the
rest area, a drive I can make in an hour or a little less than that. As
long as the snow level doesn't make it down to 3400 feet/1036m, I can go
up there during the wintertime as well as other times of the year.

This is probably the last grid expedition I'll do for 2015. DM34 is the
44th grid I have operated from during this calendar year. Most of these
grids (36) were either covering Arizona or most of the states around
Arizona (California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah), plus the 8 grids I worked
from around October's AMSAT Symposium in 3 states (Indiana, Michigan, Ohio)
and Ontario. It has been fun to get on the radio and work satellites from
all of these places, and I'm sure I will do more of this in 2016. With the
National Parks on the Air event hosted by the ARRL next year, many of the
places I visited in 2015 could count toward that program - and satellite
operating is permitted under the rules for that year-long event. :-)

Apologies to the CW station that replied to my CQ. I was not able to

Thanks for the heads-up on that one -- this is my first Icom rig ever
(up to now I've been exclusively a Yaesu person) so I'm not sure what
to expect. Perhaps the problem you had was specific to that
particular radio?

Good afternoon,

FO-29 passes around 0500-0600 UTC are very good for Europe to NA QSOs right
now. I have been on several passes the past few days and have only heard
one European station. I know it's early for European stations and very late
at night for North American stations, but a few of us are up at that hour
and looking to work Europe!

Yes,

European station are actually also around in the morning. Worked Finland,
Scotland and Germany today and yesterday on FO-29. Good signals even at low
elevation. Same for AO-7 (bit more noise on the transponder)

Good luck,

Hi,

you will find a decoder for the XW-2A, -2B, -2C, -2D digital telemetry here:
http://www.dk3wn.info/files/xw2abcd_digital.zip
To decode the 19k2 (9k6) telemetry use soundmodem software by UZ7HO:

I realize this is very short notice, and it's late enough that maybe no one
is up.

I'm visiting Memphis this week, tending to some family business as well as
for the holidays.

As I type this message, my GPS shows me at 90? 0' 0.2" W, and I note that
there is an AO-85 pass starting in about 50 minutes, at 0555.

If I'm still awake, and if it's not raining, I think I might step outside,
just a smidgen to the east and finally get around to trying out AO-85 while
standing on the 90th meridian.

If anyone else is up and you hear me attempting a Q while garbling the
exchange....well hopefully you'll know where I am. (Be nice; in CT I live
in a hole in the ground and rarely have a chance to get out and play)

I may attempt a few more FM bird passes while I'm here, as schedule and
weather permit.

Hi All,

Today, 21st of December 2015 at 1038 UTC, it is planned that the EO-79
transponder will be turned on for a prolonged period.

The FUNcube transponder subsystem on QB50p1 (EO-79) had been provided by
AMSAT-UK and AMSAT-NL and is a similar subsystem as on FUNcube-1, but
without the telemetry downlink circuitry.

The current software running on EO-79 does experience occasional reboots.
When these reboots happen, the transponder is automatically turned off and
will have to be turned back on by a command station. The FUNcube team has
selected a few command stations to do so, but be advised the transponder
may be off.

NORAD # 40025
COSPAR designator 2014-033-R

Frequencies:
*Uplink:* 435.035-435.065 MHz LSB
*Downlink:* 145.935-145.965 MHz USB

EO-79 has been set to only beacon the normal AX.25 beacon every 30 seconds
instead of 10 seconds. The beacon frequency is 145.815MHz and consists of
AX.25 frames on BPSK. more details about the downlink can be found on the
ISIS HAM page at http://isispace.nl/HAM/qb50p.html

We kindly request you to share your experiences with the BB so everyone can
benefit from operating tips and tricks, as well as being up-to-date on the
status.
We would also welcome any observation related to the transponder behaviour
when the AX.25 beacon comes on.

Just like FUNcube-1, the crystal oscillator circuits exhibit drift with
temperature. This means manual tuning will probably work best.

Lastly, the commanding team will not be available over Christmas, so the
current activations are planned from today until Thursday 24th and from
Monday 28th until Thursday 31st

73 and have FUN
Happy Holidays

Tony,

On my installation I found them under:

\program files x86\HRD software, LLC\ham radio deluxe\archive\HRD satellite

I hope this helps.

I'm able to add URL's, but can't delete the old ones. Anyone know where the
URL's are stored in the HRD Satellite app so I can remove them manually?

Thanks...
