I remember hearing this transmission

*On Christmas eve a couple of decades (Cirus 1990's) or so ago, I recall
how our AMSAT-Germany friends uploaded a beautiful rendition of "Silent
Night" to their AO-21 FM Amateur Radio transponder (which was, at the time,
riding piggyback on a Russian satellite). Then, for then next 24 hours or
so, we all got to listen to that wonderful music emanating from AO-21's 2m
FM downlink as the satellite went round and round our Earth. I hope to
enjoy again WA1ZMS transmitting Christmas music on 486 khz. tomorrow

It may also be of interest that in the fall of 2016 the next generation of
GOES weather sat, will be launched. It will have a high resolution image
transmission that will be able to be received with minimal equipment . Just
like the old days when the GOES says transmitted WEFAX. Only this will be
much better! Check the GOES-R website for further information.

Hi all,

I've met today with Jens, DL7VTX. On his holidays tour around the
islands he came to stop by S?o Miguel (CU2) when I live.
We've gone to a somewhat clear space where he worked a few European
contacts on SO-50, followed by a nice conversation about our hobby.
Given the warning time to meet I was unable to carry my equipment, so
left that pass entirely to him.
If you'd like to try a QSO with him, he'll be only on SO-50 until the
26th in HM77.
Here's a picture of both of us after those QSOs:
http://plus2.dutrasousa.name/CT8DL7VTX_CU2ZG_23DEC15.JPG

On second news I'll be active on the 25th and probably on the 26th, on
SO-50 in HM58. My last minute decision to do it left me with far from
ideal conditions to work that satellite, but still doable.
Passes will be both towards Europe and Americas, so look for CU2ZG/P.

73 and Merry Christmas to all!
Pedro CU2ZG

All:

Has anyone been able to capture the beacon transmissions from GO-32
lately? The down link is very strong, but I haven't been able to decode
anything using UZ7HO's sound card modem or the SCS Tracker (KISS mode).

I'm assuming the bird is still sending status and ID frames?

Regarding the SCS Tracker:

The manual states that it has 9600 and 19200 G3RUH, GMSK capability and
I assume this modem is compatible with the 9k6 and 19k2 GMSK moulation
used by some satellites. That said, I was wondering if anyone has used
this modem successfully to decode GMSK telemetry?

If so, on which of the currently active 9600 / 19200 birds?

Thanks...

At night I use the North Star. I live at 42? latitude so I raise the
elevation of the antennas to 42? and azimuth to 0? and the antennas should
be pointed at the north star. If not adjust accordingly. I have a AlfaSpid
rotator so the adjustment is done from the operators position, except for
looking down the mast. And of course you would use your own latitude. The
Sun is good to use during the day, same thing, let your rotor take your
antennas where it thinks the Sun is and adjust accordingly, but I think
they're pulling your leg about the welders googles, please save your eyes
and look at the shadow of your boom on the ground. If your pointed at the
Suns center your booms shadow would be a single point on the ground. The
longer your booms shadow are, the more broadside you are to the Sun. And
the moon at night would be the same as what I do with the north star, point
and look down the boom. Any of these will work and get you close enough for
satellite work. The beam width of your yagi's will make up any difference.
Have fun.

Hi Tony,

If you want to try 9600 baud telemetry, you could try Grifex also:
https://www.facebook.com/Michigan.Exploration
437.479 MHz FM
 ~12 elements works fine
9600 baud
Beacon every 10 seconds
2 pieces of free software needed only:
- Decoding using UZ7HO soundmodem (hs modem) (enable out KISS at port
9100)
- Nice telemetry analysis software (reads from KISS at 9100), see
screenshot here:

Good day,

At 1530 UTC and 1710 UTC i will be active as PD6YOTA at SO-50
please be easy on me as i'm not a highly skilled operator

PD6YOTA is one of the 42 YOTA stations participating in the YOTA December
month
YOTA stands for Youngsters on the Air, which you might know from the YOTA
summer camps, where groups of youngsters gathering together for a week full
of ham radio.
During the December month, special callsigns ending with YOTA will be on the
air, those stations are operated by youngsters for various ages.

Hi Tim,

The vertical is somewhat a limitation (compared to for example an
arrow), signals will be a bit weaker. But: it is usable for sure!
The HF wire is great: you can receive for example AO07 with it
(downlink 10 meters), and that is just awesome.

Source for details: http://www.dk3wn.info/satellites.shtml
All satellites, frequencies, etc.

Source for status: http://www.dk3wn.info/p/?page_id=29535
That is a one page overview of all satellites. The best there is.

Reports on Cubesats (and a bit more): http://www.dk3wn.info/p/
Why Cubesats: there are a lot, you can use them to test your system.

Reports on amateur satellites: http://www.amsat.org/status/

When ISS is back with packet, you should be able to hear that on your
vertical for sure.
See here for status: http://issfanclub.com/

Let us know what you can hear and what not, the group will help you.

Welcome & enjoy !

I just wanted to relate the outstanding early morning pass I had on FO-29
today. I had set up a schedule with AL7RS in AP65, way out in western
Alaska. We have been emailing a while, and Dan indicated he was ready to
try, and even agreed to try SSB since I'm not a big CW fan. After a few
emails the night before to set up specifics, we were go for the 1016Z pass,
right as FO-29 came over at near apogee. I heard him as soon as the sat
popped over the horizon, and we made a leisurely exchange for a new grid and
field for us both. Mission Accomplished!

As I was quietly sitting filling out my log, at just after 5AM local,
listening to the transponder hiss, I heard a very strong signal pop up,
exactly where I was listening. It was WH6XM calling CQ from BK29 in Hawaii!
Now, I've been on satellites on and off since 1992, and hardcore since about
2000. I have QSLs from Hawaii on both AO-10 and AO-40, but have never heard
KH6 on a LEO! I started answering his CQ before he was even done, hoping he
was full duplex and we wouldn't run out of time and pass before we made the
QSO. After a few quick back and forths, we got the calls and reports
exchanged, and I heard him until my LOS. Actually, he was strong to past
where I should have had LOS, to about -1.5 degrees. Thank you Gulf of Mexico
tropo for a bit of an extension. A quick email confirmed what I knew was a
good QSO, and off to bed I went again, a very happy ham.

So, I just wanted to thank both Dan and Bob for being there, having good
receive setups, and making the QSOs with me. This stuff is still exciting!

AO-73 from AMSAT-UK is very easy to capture telemetry from. Check out the
AMSAT-UK website for the info and the telemetry decoder program.
The Space Station (ISS) is also easy to receive for Packet/APRS monitoring.
That function is usually on, but it has been turned off for the last week or
two. No doubt it will be back up since it is pretty popular. You can get
info for ISS from AMSAT and from ARISS on the web. I use DireWolf and UISS
software for packet, but others, with a lot more experience than me, will
have other suggestions.
The vertical antenna is a bit of a mixed blessing. You'll likely have some
reception at intermediate satellite elevations, but you may lose some signal
when the satellites go right over head. On the other hand, satellites are at
intermediate elevations more often then they are overhead, so give your set
up a try and let us know what happens!

Outstanding Drew! I'm now getting excited about getting OTS from Florida as
I also don't have Hawaii on a leo...

Subject: [amsat-bb] A good morning on FO-29
