Subject: [amsat-bb] A good morning on FO-29

I just wanted to relate the outstanding early morning pass I had on FO-29
today. I had set up a schedule with AL7RS in AP65, way out in western
Alaska. We have been emailing a while, and Dan indicated he was ready to
try, and even agreed to try SSB since I'm not a big CW fan. After a few
emails the night before to set up specifics, we were go for the 1016Z pass,
right as FO-29 came over at near apogee. I heard him as soon as the sat
popped over the horizon, and we made a leisurely exchange for a new grid and
field for us both. Mission Accomplished!

As I was quietly sitting filling out my log, at just after 5AM local,
listening to the transponder hiss, I heard a very strong signal pop up,
exactly where I was listening. It was WH6XM calling CQ from BK29 in Hawaii!
Now, I've been on satellites on and off since 1992, and hardcore since about
2000. I have QSLs from Hawaii on both AO-10 and AO-40, but have never heard
KH6 on a LEO! I started answering his CQ before he was even done, hoping he
was full duplex and we wouldn't run out of time and pass before we made the
QSO. After a few quick back and forths, we got the calls and reports
exchanged, and I heard him until my LOS. Actually, he was strong to past
where I should have had LOS, to about -1.5 degrees. Thank you Gulf of Mexico
tropo for a bit of an extension. A quick email confirmed what I knew was a
good QSO, and off to bed I went again, a very happy ham.

So, I just wanted to thank both Dan and Bob for being there, having good
receive setups, and making the QSOs with me. This stuff is still exciting!

Honestly that one and only contact I did not get your call so no QSL.

However I finally heard myself loud as hell had to turn the volume down. I
know I did not have the headset on my bad...

BUT YAAAAEEEE I finally got through with full duplex.

That thing acts like a linear bird which I do not have all the right gear
for. It is all over the place....

Anyway whom ever that was please let me know, we can not log it but it was
pretty dam close...! :)

It still makes me crazy flip out just like the first time. Something to be
said for a citizen to track a satellite in space talk on it with someone
else... Just great I tell you.

Merry Christmas to me!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to AMSAT members and satellite
enthusiasts everywhere!

In this season of giving, we've had a generous offer for matching funds up
to $1,000 for those that contribute to the Fox-1Cliff and -1D crowdsourcing
campaign at https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/6pz92/ab/561Zd between now and
December 31st. Make your donation twice as valuable by taking advantage of
this opportunity and contributing before the end of the year, and help AMSAT
fund the launch of the next two satellites in the Fox-1 series.

Slated for launch in 2016 on the inaugural Spaceflight SHERPA mission aboard
a SpaceX Falcon 9, Fox-1Cliff and -1D carry university experiments from
Pennsylvania State-Erie, Vanderbilt, University of Iowa, cameras provided by
Virginia Tech, as well as amateur radio voice repeaters capable of U/V or
L/V operation.

Donations of $100 or more are eligible for a special AMSAT Fox challenge
coin, and $1,000 or more qualifies for a plaque with an actual solar panel
cover from Fox-1Cliff or -1D. (We've nearly exhausted our coin supply and
are waiting on resupply from the mint. Plaques will be distributed sometime
after spacecraft integration. Please be patient for delivery of either
premium.)

AMSAT is a 501-(c)-(3) not-for-profit educational and scientific
organization of amateur radio operators whose purpose is to design,

Hello All,

Greetings. In an effort to test a new autobaud selection feature in
FoxTelem 1.03, the Operations Team will be conducting some experimental
sessions with AO-85 next week (Dec. 29 and 30, 2015).

Telemetry collectors in/near the US are encouraged to participate and help
with testing the autobaud selection feature by installing the 1.03 test
version available here:
http://amsat.us/FoxTelem/test/

I suggest you do a clean/fresh install in a new folder so you can always go
back to 1.02 if you prefer. (It's possible to upgrade only the new files,
but if you have to ask how, you'd better not do it ;))

You'll see a new "Auto" button option, next to the Low and High speed
buttons; use it.

Specifically, during the following passes we'll be switching from the
current voice transponder operation with low speed telemetry, to high speed
telemetry (Note: in high speed mode, voice operations are OFF). The
switches will take place about every minute or two during the pass. Please
avoid making contacts during these testing periods.

 29.12.2015 AO-85 11:19 11:32 UTC
 29.12.2015 AO-85 13:00 13:12 UTC

 30.12.2015 AO-85 11:45 11:59 UTC

During 2016, two or three more Fox satellites are planned for launch into
orbit, and these birds will need to operate in high speed data mode from
time to time to download space photos, experimental data, etc. Taking
advantage of some in orbit testing with Fox-1A/AO-85 will be very helpful to
the further development of the FoxTelem ground station software. All the
thanks go to Chris Thompson AC2CZ for his extraordinary efforts on the
telemetry software (both client and server side)!

Feedback about your experiences will be appreciated. Email to the list is
preferred so all can learn.

73,

Mark L. Hammond [N8MH]

Vince,

The G series is the most general purpose though not as good at cleaning.

F series is for carbon / conductive plastic and specifically for pots.
I've used teeny bits of the G stuff for pots. Watch to not solvent off the
tracks in that case! Guess how I know...

Clean the grit, then a little G series on the contact surface. Pots need
more care, I usually disassemble them to physically clean the oily dust.

I have been sucked into a discussion that makes me feel like I have spent
the last six months in a coma...

In a nutshell:

QUOTE

Now, let me remind you of the latest developments, as seen from a casual
but highly interested observer like myself, and you will tell me if this is
a sad joke or what.

1) From the AMSAT newsfeed, on July 25 we learn that "AMSAT-NA, AMSAT-DL,
and Virginia Tech Announce Potential Phase-3E Opportunity".

2) In the following months there has been absolutely NO FOLLOW-UP, no
information whatsoever on this potentially crucial piece of information.

3) A couple of days ago, completely out of the blue, we learn that "AMSAT
Ground Terminal Development Expands to Texas".

Hello? WTF is going on here? The P3E launch opportunity has morphed into a
geostationary satellite (never heard a thing about that). The projct has
morphed from a P3E "old school" satellite into this digital monster (never
heard a thing about that). Things have developed to such an extent that now
"ground terminals are being expanded"...

I know this has been asked a hundred times, but I'm going to make it a
hundred and one. I'm using UISS for packet on satellites. What do I put
in the "VIA" box to get into NO-84. I've tried ARISS, APRSAT, and PSAT
and I was not heard. Obviously, it could be that the satellite just
isn't hearing me, but I'd like to know that I'm using the correct path
to give myself the best chance of getting in.

Most of the packets I see from NO-84 have a couple of paths designated
like "CQ,PSAT,ARISS". Do I need to put in two paths like "PSAT,ARISS"?
If so, how do you do that on UISS?

Thanks for the help and Happy Holidays!

Steve,

You can use just ARISS in that VIA field. It worked fine for
me when I tried NO-84 yesterday. The satellite retransmits what
it hears with other items inserted in the path, as you saw. PSAT
shows that the digipeater is active, when that appears in
its packets.

Good morning,

Got up this morning, got my coffee and turned on the computer to check
satellite passes. As the computer was loading the weather came up, 34
degrees with 18 to 20 MPH wind. I didn't even bother checking the birds,
living in Phoenix AZ I don't have warm enough clothes to go out in that
weather for any length of time. Oh well, I'll check later for the
afternoon passes.

Hope you all had a great Christmas.

Hi Ed,

It was -15F this morning in Manitoba (-26C) and I still have to climb the

business until spring :-(

Have a great New Year.
