Thanks for the link, really enjoyed that - hope I can catch the Mars story.

Amazing to me is this "almost" exactly how I discovered ham radio at
age 12. I was visiting the home of some friends and noticed a
strange radio they had, a Zenith Transoceanic table model. Noticed
it had several bands and one said "police" so I said why don't we see
if we can hear any cops? Well heard nothing at 5 on the dial (5-MHz)
so began tuning around and came across a whole bunch of people
talking about 4 on the dial (75m phone).

And that caught my interest that ordinary people were talking on a
radio. I eventually found out it was ham radio and a year later,
after saving allowance six months I bought a 3-tube receiver
kit. That led to finding out about a ham radio class at the school
in a neighboring town which I got my dad to take me to. The teacher
became my elmer and administered my Novice exam - license KN8MWA Nov.11, 1958

I was already interested in space travel and that lead me into
electronics which I studied to be an EE starting in 1962. In July
1971 I began working as a young engineer for NASA at Goldstone.

Funny where an interest in ham radio takes you.

Since Oct. 17 I have worked about 115 stations in 70 grids from 11
countries. All have been uploaded to LOTW. 50 grids have been confirmed
by LOTW.

It is time for me to join the CQWW team at VP5DX. I will not be available
for SAT contacts this weekend.

If you still need FL41cu and/or VP5 I will consider requests for schedules
Monday Oct. 31 after 2000z, and all day Nov. 1st. (I depart early Nov.
2nd). Contact me at my qrz e-mail address.

Hi Wouter,

I always read your messages and while I currently do not have much time for
the birds, I certainly very much appreciate your efforts.
Thank you!

Hi all..

I am guessing this has been mentioned before on here, but I would have
missed it.

I am curious to know why all Satelite TLE data can't be found in the
few databases available, the obvious ones being OOREAS, Aeneas and a
few others..

A couple of the guys provide the data....but still interested to know
why, and is this going to be a continuing trend...?

have forgotten how to install a new bird, like A0-85, with the current

If the satellite was a secondary payload on a classified launch (e.g.
one where the primary payload was a satellite for the Department of
Defence or the National Reconnaissance Office), then the TLEs for all
the payloads are not published in the open on Space-Track or Celestrak.
The satellite operators will receive TLEs for their satellite and they
may choose to release that information.

O/OREOS launched with the DoD mission STPSAT-2, also known as USA 217.
Aeneas launched with the NRO mission NROL-36. Even AO-85 (FOX-1A) has
this problem because it launched on the same Atlas V rocket as AEHF-3
(USA 246) for the US Air Force; however, AMSAT-NA releases AO-85's TLE
on their website.

I expect the trend to continue in the near term for missions that fly
with US government military/reconnaissance satellites. If the mission is
on deployed from a commercial launch or from the International Space
Station, then the TLEs will get published.

-Daniel VA3KKZ

There was an interesting article on Space News which touches lightly on this:

http://spacenews.com/faa-estimates-space-traffic-management-costs-at-under-100
-million/

In particular, see the last two paragraphs. A transfer of responsibility to
the FAA could conceivably
result in coverage of satellites currently restricted. Many "IFs" in that
scenario.

Jim,
You will need to do a manual import. I am using Firefox to describe download.

Go to : http://www.amsat.org/amsat/ftp/keps/current/nasabare.txtDo a Right
Click Save Page to a location of your choice. Folder, Desktop, etc.

Save it and then open it. In my case I had to change the font to a smaller
font and then resave it for some reason as Nova would not take it.
Then in Nova go to Keps Elements >Disk File update>Manual update from File.
Point to the file. That will import the latest keps from AMSAT.
You will then have to set up AO-85 in your Amateur Group. I assume you know
how to do that. It is covered in the Nova Manual. SO-50 should already be in
the Nova database. While AO-85 is not.

Good luck 73, Adrian AA5UK

I picked up the DIY kit w/CHIP, connected and powered it up.
Setup for North America, it's setup outside however, I really don't know
what I'm looking at or for.
Connect to the outernet wifi, but trying to connect with my browser yields:
"Your receiver doesn't seem to have reported in. Err: null"
Is that telling me whatever satellite I'm looking for isn't really there?

It is part of a large geostationary satellite due to launch at the end of 2016

I assume at this stage all the equipment is more or less ready waiting
for the launch. It is listed on this page as late 2016:

Many European stations are getting ready to receive signals with a
slightly modified TV LNB, connected to around a 1m dish. Narrow band
uplink will probably need a 1m dish and a 10W amplifier on 2300Mhz.
Wideband DVB-S uplink is possible but I assume it would need a much
larger dish. There is a narrow band DVB-S format with reduced
bit-rate. I have lots of experience in this area.
