Hi,

I have had a look at the ZL radio spectrum license register, and I did
not find any S-band allocations for Rocket Lab, but I did find 4x
"interesting" 400 MHz frequencies - 400.3 MHz, 400.7 MHz, 401.1 MHz and
401.6 MHz, with emission mode 150KF1DWT and EIRP of -6 dBW.

The licence indicates that these frequencies are a "meteorological aid".
I have no idea what sort of meteorological aid they may be though -
weather balloon channels? wind profiling radar? (surely not with only
250 mW EIRP?) or something else?

Ross, those frequencies you mentioned are used by local government weather
authorities. They launch special weather balloons (Sonde balloons) which
provides important data for weather forecasting.

The telemetry data is easily decoded by using a program called "Sonde
Monitor". Just google it and you will see lots of info about it.

Special permit is required to transmit on those frequencies.

All,

Today six cubesats were launched into low Earth orbit from the ISS.

At 08:24:59 UTC these QB50 series cubesats were deployed: SOMP 2,
HAVELSAT and Columbia (QBUS 4).
At 11:54:59 UTC these cubesats were deployed: SGSat (KySat 3),
CXBN 2 and IceCube (Earth 1).

Hi!

On my way to the office this morning, I stopped for an
overhead ISS pass at a nearby city park. The 1437 UTC
pass over central Arizona had a maximum elevation of 75
degrees, which should have had a lot of traffic from
stations along the west coast, southwestern USA, Texas,
and probably some in Mexico before my LOS. Instead, I
heard only a couple of RS0ISS beacons, and I was only
able to get one packet retransmitted by the ISS when it
was over my head at 1442 UTC. The ariss.net web site has
very few retransmitted packets listed, and more of the
RS0ISS ID beacons picked up by various gateways.

On Twitter, Mark KK6OTJ in southern California mentioned
a similar observation from that pass. He heard a couple of
packets, and nothing else.

Has something happened to the VHF radio and/or antenna on
the Columbus module? Or could the CubeSats that were
deployed earlier today have something to do with the lack
of digipeated packets from the ISS in the past few hours?

I also had the same problem as Patrick WD9EWK on the 2 meter digipeater. I
heard a few packets but could not get into the digipeater.
on a later pass which was only 7 degrees over my location I heard the
digipeater but could not get into it.

My observation has been that the new ISS radio setup is nowhere close to
what it used to be.

I am selling my YAESU FT-847 Full Duplex Trabsceiver on eBay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/192188912290?

Works perfectly, looks new, and I made over 200 satellite contacts with it.
?I love this rig. ?I am only selling it because I have bought an IC-910 and
want to get a dedicated HF transceiver.
If any one wants to pick this radio up at Dayton, I will refund $130, in
cash, making the ?cost $1300 which still includes the FC-20 auto tuner and
Desk Mike. ?nI really hope someone form ANSAT will buy this excellent
transceiver which has held its value for decades.

Following is a schedule for my northbound trip on Friday and Saturday,
May 19 & 20th. If you need any of these grids then work out some passes
at the listed times and get them to me before Friday.

Times are estimated. If I get busy handing out FN06 in North Bay then
it may delay my arrival in FN07; that kind of thing. I did build in
some wiggle room but you never know if it will be enough. Try and look
for passes up to a half hour either side of those times just to be safe.

*Friday May 19, 2017 UTC*
Leave home 1100
FN05ia - Bracebridge ON 1300
FN06hg - North Bay ON 1500
FN07dm - New Liskeard ON 1700
FN08wn - Amos QC 2000

*Saturday May 20, 2017 UTC*
Leave Amos 1100
FN18eo - La Morandiere QC 1200
FN19vm - Desmaraisville QC 1300

I'm already working out some schedules for NP4JV for FN19. I was
looking for passes that would cover Arizona but at least a few of them
should be OK for other areas as well. If not then see if you can find
something for suitable.

?Hi Mike!

Until this morning, I'd probably have to disagree with
you on the performance of the ISS digipeater on 145.825
MHz. I think it had been working about as well as it
was before the old VHF radio failed in mid-October. Since
the replacement VHF radio was installed last month, my
issues have been with how stations were clogging the
frequency with mindless beacons - which seems to have
changed over to having more stations trying to work each
other. A good thing. :-)

For me, the only real change for the ISS packet environment
since the replacement VHF radio was installed would be the
deployment of the CubeSats earlier today. I don't know if
those, somehow, are making the VHF radio deaf. It is eerie
to see that the last packet retransmitted by the ISS
digipeater as of now on ariss.net (just before 2000 UTC)
was from my TH-D74 HT several hours ago.

I have for sale an Icom 9100 HF/VHF/UHF satellite radio. This model does
100 watts on HF, 6 meters and 2 meters, and 75 watts on 70cm. It does full
duplex for the satellites and will do dual receive between HF/6 and 2 or
70cm, or between 2m and 70cm. 1.2GHZ can be added with an optional
module. It has IF DSP so no narrow filters are needed, a CW memory keyer,
built in TCXO, and many other features, you can read more about it at:
-
http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/hamhf/5091.html
-
The 9100 I am selling has the optional 3khz and 6khz roofing filters
installed, as well as the D-STAR board.
-
It is in pretty good physical condition with some scratches on the top and
bottom of the case, and some scuffing on the one side of the case. It
comes with the hand mic, power cord, manual, and original box.
-
New this would go for $2670 with the options it has. I am asking $1800
plus shipping for it and can take paypal/check/MO. Pictures are available
on request.

I'll be in EM99, West Virginia for a couple of days this weekend if anyone
needs it. Once again this is not a dedicated sat trip, so limited passes on
sked only. I should have some operating time Thursday evening, probably on
Friday and Saturday evenings also.

I'd really like to work some EU passes on FO29 and AO7 if possible, as I'll
be much closer than I normally am from EL98! Might be some opportunities for
new DXCC for myself, as well as a new grid and state for EU stations.

You can email me direct if you're interested in a sked, and I'll try my best
to make it happen!

I'd like to nominate Gabe Zeifman NJ7H for Satellite Dxpedition of the Year.
Or maybe Dxpedition Operator, whichever is better.

Gabe just returned from Europe after activating nine DXCC entities,
including some that are really difficult from North America, and making a
serious effort to work as many US stations as possible. And I mean a real
effort. He was up at all hours and standing outside with his portable
stations working those of us back home. Fortunately, AO-7 kept working
(more or less) and many of us got to work 'new ones'. And on top of all
that, Gabe has already uploaded contact data to LOTW so DXCC and VUCC credit
is there waiting. I was able to work 3 new countries and some very rare
grids.

Thanks, Gabe! That will be a hard act for anyone to follow.
