I have an SDRPlay RSP 1 for sale, I bought it new from HRO last October
intending to use it as a linear satellite receiver. It's basically brand new
out of the box, I did use it two or three times, and it works well. Shortly
after, I got an FT-857 to got with my FT-817 for a full duplex sat rig as
well as a portable HF radio, and the SDRPlay has been sitting on a shelf
ever since. The SDR is great but dual radios just fit my all-portable
operating style better.

I'd like to get $110 for it, shipped. Included is a Tripp-Lite dual ferrite
choked USB cable, which I found helpful to prevent RFI from affecting the
front end of the receiver. Also an SMA>SO-239 pigtail.

If anyone is interested, contact me off list.

I believe that ?lot of the respondents are missing some facts here. The
captain of the vessel controls the entire vessel. It is HIS domain and his
only. He his totally, completely and utterly responsible for the ship (worth
million$ of dollars) the crew, and all the passengers. He also holds a
licence that if revoked, places him on the unemployment list, and blacklist.?
If he decides that amateur radio should not take place on his ship, DONE.
Not gonna happen. He may not understand it; how to educate him? He, or one
of his peers, may have had a negative experience with amateur radio. Again,
ain't gonna happen. These incidents may have filtered up to the senior
management where they placed a blanket rule that there would be no amateur
radio on any of their vessels.
Then we have another thing taking place right now in the world, terrorism.
If a passenger sees someone on the promenade deck talking on the radio and
they freak out, what is the captain going to do? Ban radio. Coupled with
that is Homeland Security. You may not be aware how much comms from all
areas have come under scrutiny with the looney tunes blowing themselves, and
innocents, up. Be glad they have not curtailed amateur radio activity as
they had in the past.
IMHO, the real thing here is to try to find out why amateur radio has been
banned. Then to move on to educate the rule makers. Booking then canceling
the trip will not matter to them. That is one mosquito among legions. And
may cost you a cancellation fee. =!6^(
Please, let us find and deal with facts and let the emotions lie.?---??
Ciao baby, catch you on the flip side. ???

Also the German TUI Cruises "Mein Schiff ..." fleet does not allow to take
ham radio transmitters on board.
Perhaps we should setup a list of ham-friendly tour operators.

All,

Some basic rules which apply to captains and passengers, whether of an
airliner or a ship:

1. The captain is always The Captain, master after God.

2. If the captain is wrong, see rule 1.

This does not mean his decisions can be completely arbitrary. For instance,
if the company he works for has a rule which says no ham operations, he is
subject to termination if he overrides that. If the company permits ham
operations, but he considers there are additional considerations which in
his judgement make that unsafe, he has the authority to make that decision.
There may be valid temporary reasons, such as maintenance issues which while
not unsafe impose operational restrictions until corrected. He may well be
required to forbid ham operation under those circumstance. He will need to
report that, and he may need to justify his decision to his boss. A pattern
of arbitrary decisions showing poor judgement may lead to termination, or
even loss of his Master's license.

By all means inquire before or complain after the trip, but in no case does
he need to justify his actions to you. See rule 1.

Hello,

I have just purchased and installed the UISS packet program. There will be a
72deg pass at 7:16PM Eastern time tonight (5/29). I would love to try
making my first contact through the ISS but have never done it before and
need some guidance on how to set up UISS for such a contact. Also if
somebody is available during that time to help me try it out.
Thank you.

Michael,

Try this PDF by K9JKM:

http://www.ariss.org/uploads/1/9/6/8/19681527/k9jkm_2012_symposium_ver2.pdf

Between it, and links referenced in it, that seems to be a good
starting point. More information is also in the 2017 update of
AMSAT's Getting Started with Amateur Satellites book, but that
won't help you for tonight - unless you were at Dayton last
weekend, and bought a copy there.

Good luck, and 73!

A little short story a long time ago 1963 US Navy I was the IC Electrician
and a small PCE ship stationed out of Great Lakes Naval Station , We would
pick up reserves and do training on Lake Michigan , I Did not have My ham
lic but had always been interested in Communications . I did have a CB
Lic KRJ6696 yes we use to have them LOL . I got permission from the
Captain to put My CB on board , I ran over 500 Ft of RG-58 Coax to a
Fiberglass ant I installed on the mast .. I Know now that I would have been
lucky to have 4 Watts going in and less than one at the ant ..

Well it was fun I could hear 80 Miles groundwave and people could hear Me ?
so about a week later We were out in the middle of the big lake and I got
a call to report to the Capt on the bridge . I got all nervous put on My
best uniform and went stood at attention and Said, Yes sir . He was upset
and shouted He was trying to watch TV And He heard My voice and could nor
watch the TV And told Me to get My crap radio off turned off I said Yes
Sir .He also said remove the radio and ant from His Ship or He would come
down and throw it over the side .. I said Yes sir and that was the last of
My Radio Communications aboard a Ship, Well except later on two Aircraft
Carriers in the Communication Room .. Even at ? Watt that was stronger
that any TV Signal out across the Lake . So Yes the Capt and People like
Him in chare are the final say so.

As We all know the World has changed since 911 , As a big Scanner user
all of us use to be able to take a Scanner , Recorder . Camera , Binoculars
Etc to an Airport , Rail Yard , Boat Yard to Listen and find Freqs . if
we try that now Homeland Security will drag our butts in for Questioning .
And be put on a watch list ..

Since I am taking up bandwidth I would like to Wish Everyone a Wonderful
Safe and Happy Memorial Day. and A Big Thank you to the ones that gave
their ultimate Sacrifice for all of us to Have the Freedom We all have .

Leaning over the edge of a pier, I heard a plunk and as they say, time
slowed down as my brain instantly realized it was my cellphone,.

I jumped in and dug around in the muck (about 3' deep) and probably in
under a minute found it. Ran to the house. ran fresh water all over it,
dried it and then the same with alcohol. Then dried it in the toaster oven
(NOT ON, but I'd let it get too hot to touch, then turn it off and stick
the phone in.

That sorta worked. But the screen was shot. Next day I took it apart 2
screws and then just unsnap everything. There is virtually nothing inside
but one circuit board anda few chips and the chcklet keyboard. The screen
would not detach.

So I then put the ckt brd in a 60C (140F) box and left it 24 hours. Now
it works perfectly!

Just FYI

Oddly enough, the above is what got me into amateur radio (satellites came
along for the ride) - the government slowly starting to encrypt their
communications. But the rest of it (being questioned by homeland
security) is not true (or, at least, is illegal). If you are on public
property, and are not breaking any laws (of which there are none when it
comes to binoculars or cameras), then homeland security CANNOT detain you.
If they do, you have a very winnable court case.

See:
http://www.photoattorney.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Photographing-the-Exte
rior-of-Federal-Buildings.pdf

The above applies to private entities, as well.

If scanning is legal in your locale (and it is in MOST states), then local
and federal police can't do anything about it - at least not without
violating our (USA) constitutional rights.

You found the magic method!

Most people don't realize how LOOOONG it takes for water to evaporate out of
all the really tiny spaces under ball grid integrated circuits and whatnot
these days. I have long recommended 24 or 48 hours or even longer at 150F.
Higher temps risk melting plastic parts.

Opening the gizmo so water vapor can get out is of course also helpful, but
most folks don't know how. If you can't open a gizmo, then cycling
temperature between room temp and 150F can also be helpful. This "pumps"
the water vapor out. It takes a long time to do a cycle, because you have
to wait for the innards to really cool, and there are long thermal time
constants. I do it by raising the oven to 150F, then turning it off and
letting it cool down over the next couple of hours, then repeat. I suggest
anyone doing this PUT A SIGN ON THE OVEN so nobody accidentally tries to use
the oven during this time.

The thing that destroys wet electronics is electrolytic action. If you can
take the battery out, do it instantly. Otherwise, while it is wet current
will flow thru the water bridges between circuits, and deposit conductive
compounds formed from the metal ions moved by the current. Once you have a
bunch of conductive junk under chips etc, recovery is very very difficult.
If you can't take the battery out, turn the thing off as soon as possible
(which of course in modern electronics doesn't mean really "off", but at
least some circuits will be deenergized.) Then begin the drying process
immediately. Time is your enemy, as every second the battery is in, metal
ions are moving.

Impatient people don't leave the phone in the oven long enough, try to turn
on and use the still-wet-inside gizmo, thus destroying it.

Did someone take a video of you in the muck? We might even pay to see that.
