Just thought I would pass on some info.
I want to build a nordic folkboat style boat before I pass, so I decided
last
december to build a 3 ft long model of one, to teach myself how to build a
boat like this. It's been a good journey so far ...

Rip yourself some battens and put them on the molds; each batten
representing a lap. Fiddle and fiddle and fiddle until you're happy.
Take photos of the upside down jig and turn them rightside up. That's a
nice way of seeing what's up. Once it looks pretty, mark your lap lines
and record them, too.
I'll try and elaborate a little further on my teaching technique. I'm
serious about starting with the midship mold. Figure out that spacing.
It's your business how you go from a wider garboard to a narrow bilge
plank, to a wide sheer. But I recommend that's how you go, and I like to
make the changes in width gradual. Just before or after this, confirm
the lofted sheer line with a batten. You have the artistic freedom to
adjust it.
Then lay a garboard batten. There may be some other useful tricks, but
I'd just say give it your best visual shot. Use straight grain softwood
battens of a slightly rectangular section. More rise at the stem will
make the rest of the planking go easier, even if the garboard looks more
daunting. Pick a spot on the transom.
Then run a batten through the bilge. It's mathematics from here out, but
for me it's mathematics by eye. For lapstrake of this size, I don't use
any of the various plank scale schemes. Some of these at least are more
appropriate for carvel. Eventually you'll have a batten up for every
plank line. You started with the midship spacing - then focus on spacing
at the stem and transom, lastly tinker with how the battens flow along
the remaining molds. Everthing is different, but everything should look
even and fair. That simple eh.
