Hello

Shifting lots of data between 2 computers , for instance
from a older modell to the more modern kind.
There are many possibilities.

I had to shift data between a 100Mc 486 with a 1,2 Gig disk.
And annother with 2,2 Gig. One Petium2 360Mc with a 2 and a
6,6 Gig disk and more into 2 new machines with 80 Gig disks.
The fastes easiest way is of course with crossover patch
cable for network cards. And I installed one in the older
Computer.

Or you could use (borrow) an external Hard drive like the
ORB 2,2 Gig (5G + units came later) unit which was available
in different configurations. One used the printer port (
looped between printer and computer , one for USB , one for
SCSI and one build into computer into a CD size slot). And I
had used the SCSI and Printer configuration.

Or , even better , borrow a 1 gig USB Memory stick ,
available under many names , smallest size about 64 Meg and
maximum size available probably 2 Gig.

With Windows 95/98 one can use crossover Printer port
cables, or use crossover serial port cables or the relevant
crossover adaptors. I've done that as well.

Or , you can take out the old drive and install that as
secondary drive in the new machine and tranfer data this
way. This works well and fast.

USB fast Ethernet Adapters are available. About 22 US$
and there are several USB/ Serial adapters available as
well.

Modern Digital Cameras using memory sticks, cards, whatever
could also be used as data carrier. For instance my Sony
Digital camera uses a memory stick pro for which I have 2 ea
256 Mb sticks. In the data tranfer mode -USB- the Stick can
be acessed and utelised as any USB E.G. Thumbdrive. The only
thing is that is has to be powered up by the camera during
data transfers. The data cannot be used by the camera of
course , but this method will allow to transfer data from
the old to the new. in this case in 2 ea 256 Mb portions.
All together I would estimate around a 15 min job. So ,
maybe a camera can be borrowed?/ Is already available?

The new computers, the thinking is probably to save on the
serial ports , now when they all have a modem in, and else
there is USB.

I hope this helps.
