Misko / Marco;

Have you looked into Devuan? It's Debian/Ubuntu without the overhead of
systemd. They still make a distro for the i386 based systems as well. It
may be a little faster than those distros that use systemd and it does
come with Mate as a desktop however you can add Trinity Desktop (maintained
by a ham here in Wisconsin) which is a full rewrite/modernized KDE3.

Their first release was code named Jessie since it was based directly off of
the Debian Jessie release but their next version up is called Ascii and it's
based on Debian 9 (stretch) and is still active and being maintained. The
current version as of this writing is Beowulf which is based on Debian 10
(Buster).

The website is https://www.devuan.org and it's what we base the main OS for
EastNet with. It handles packet server applications (LinFBB, URONode, axMail-
Fax, etc) just fine even on older hardware. If you have native Debian installed
migrating to Devuan should be a cakewalk. I was on Debian Wheezy and migrated up
to Devuan Jessie and now Ascii.

You should be able to stay on kernel 3.x but if you must upgrade to a 4.x
series kernel there's ax25 stack patches available by Marius YO2LOJ on his
website. Don't forget about the kernel ax25 stack bug in the ax25.ko
module.
