Brian,

First of all, I would like to test with you and others whether this
answer will reach you at all. So please confirm when you read this.
Particularly because I type my response in a GUI again (have just
re-installed MATE graphics in this old Debian 8 box) where I also then
reinstalled Thunderbird to read/send FBB mails. (You bet this GUI and
Thunderbird is slow like an old turtle on a sand beach, but I am retired
and not in a hurry anymore, HI!)

Regarding Devuan, few years ago I did try it in a non-ham environment at
another place, but for some reason it did not suit my (then)
requirements. (I cannot remember now what the issue was.) Probably some
software I needed did not want to start etc.

So at this stage I am still with Debian 8 and FBB 7.0.8-beta. In a day
or two I will try to compile FBB 7.09. For now GUI/Thunderbird is
disabled at boot, so the command prompt comes at acceptable speed. Then
I start FBB (not yet as within boot process until fully checked). Of
course, as the sysop I have either xfbbC, telnet localhost, and
Thunderbird to handle my own mails.

Will see what will happen. I would not like to risk trying migration to
Devuan (or even to upgrade to Debian 9) because if something fails I
would come into trouble. But no option is excluded in times to come, HI.
