If you want to experiment or learn Linux on your current windows computer try out
one of the puppy linux distros. The latest one Fossapup is recent and based on
debian/ubuntu and is compatible with those repositories for software. I've loaded
most of the ham related software such as fldigi etc without issue, they all work.
The nice thing about Puppy is you load it on a USB stick and can run totally in
ram. That being said you do need a more modern computer that will boot from USB
and for FossaPup I recommend at least a coreduo processor with 2gb of ram if you
intend to run it in ram (REAL FAST). It can also be installed onto your hard drive
but the point I wanted to make is you can load it from usb, run it in ram, experiment
with Linux and not touch your windows hard drives at all. Also any changes or programs
you install are saved. It takes any changes you make to the filesystem and saves
them back onto the usb stick so the next time you boot all your software is still
there.
