be good to share it with you guys as a bulletin.

"The Navy opted to use the easily obtained amateur (ham) radio "JNOS" networking
software and the Amateur X.25 (AX.25) packetcommunications protocol, which the
Navy modified so it could use the KG-84C cryptographic device and the
MIL-STD-188-110-compatible serial-tone modem. The Navy also simplified
hardware installation and equipped its server with an internal AX.25 interface
card that formats data for transmission.

The Navy chose off-the-shelf Eudora software for Windows email for its network
because Eudora is very user-friendly and is already widely used in both
government and industry. Similarly, the Navy chose JNOS network-level software
because JNOS uses the widely accepted open-systems-interconnection model and
the widely used simplified mail-network protocol, along with the mail pull-off
Protocol 3, or Pop3. Each of these products should be very familiar to Army
automation specialists who work with e-mail. The Army could easily use this
software over the HF media to construct a warfighter net.

As initially implemented, the Navy's system is very simple and concentrates on
exchanging free text point-to-point e-mail messages. The system has no
preformatted U.S. message-text format or variable message format database-able
messages, or database exchanges as the Army does in our current command-and-
control systems such as the Army tactical command-andcontrol system or Army
battlecommand system. This type of system could be quickly created for the
Army, if desired, simply by using existing common software."
