RAOTC News
August Broadcast

Further to that mentioned on the WIA National News, this is another reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 7th of August 2023 at 8 pm local time; thats tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.

The first article describes the development of the ‘Oboe bomb aiming system developed during WW2. Oboe coupled radar tracking with radio transponder technology. In addition to equipment aboard the aircraft, it employed 2 ground stations called ‘cat and mouse.

The second article quotes from a recently released book; it describes how a clandestine radio receiver was made from scrounged and homemade components during WW2. This was accomplished by Norwegian detainee, Haakon Nilsen in Tatura, Victoria; it enabled European detainees to hear news of the war in Europe and the Pacific.

Listen at 8 pm Monday, local time, over the VK7RAA/VK7RHT state-wide network or at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX ‘Spectrum Tasmania via the BATC members stream or in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV. Audio feed is available on VK7RDR, 439.775MHz, Dazzler Range.

The date again is August 7th. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able; this provides the RAOTC broadcast committee with an idea of how many are listening to these broadcasts.

If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to the audio file on the RAOTC website:

Thursday Night SSTV Nets

Another interesting net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – ZAB, EKA, PD and ZGK all sharing fifteen photos via the North South link. There was some noise on the link due to poor weather conditions on Mt Arthur.

There were various subjects like:

A series of photo of a mural in the main street of Lilydale, northern Tasmania. This outdoor café scene includes a cat and dog doing what comes naturally to them.

A series of photos of model railway dioramas including the one for “Puffing Billy”

A close encounter with a high speed train

    The Potterage homestead

    An RF Plummers delight

An historic series of photos of northern amateurs at a local café for their regular morning tea

A silver sphere with a smiley face and an optical illusion of an impossible cube frame

A reminder that Ken VK7KRJs and Steve VK7OOs fully automatic 24/7 monitoring sites allow anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.

Note: If you missed the net, there are archives of all SSTV nights. These photos can be seen on NTARCs website under blogs and arranged as weekly nets or on Kens 2m SSTV website as an infinitely-scrolling page. Also on Kens site are other interesting photos that have been sent between the net nights along with the current HF conditions report and weather radar map.

Last Saturdays Equine Endurance Ride at Lebrina from a technical point of view went “swimmingly”. Maybe thats a bad choice of adverb as the weather had other ideas and was not very forgiving, continuously changing and even varying drastically between Check Points throughout the day. A couple of Check Points were gumboots only and as for the wind gusts….. luckily the weight of the battery boxes managed to keep the awnings from departing the vehicles. The 80, 40 and 20 kilometre events all concluded safely even if quite a few riders were looking quite bedraggled by the finish. Many thanks to VK7s Andre ZAB and Stuart FEAT for looking after Ride Base and converting all the spoken words into legible text and Roger ARN, Maddy, Leon, Idris ZIR, Stuart ES, Fran and Stefan ZSB who were having all the fun at the Check Points. HiHi

Now a couple of left over items from the last club technical night.

Peter VK7KPC as well as bringing in his latest Traegar transceiver also provided a slide presentation of photographs from his previous few weeks of travel around Victoria. These were displayed on the large TV monitor for all to see and featured some of his tourist stop offs. Two notable sites were firstly the Royal Flying Doctors Service Museum at Broken Hill. This featured equipment like the1931 Traeger automatic Morse keyboard. This operated like a typewriter keyboard, by pressing one of the letter keys it activated strips of metal containing notches and indentations representing the dots and dashes of the Morse code to be sent. I suppose this relieved people of having to learn Morse code. Also a portable transceiver suitable for vehicle or horseback use and the iconic pedal powered generator manufactured by Traeger.

The second notable site was the Lake Boga Catalina Museum. Situated between Swan Hill and Kerang on the shores of Lake Boga. The museum is in commemoration to the service men and women who served at No.1 Flying Boat Repair Depot Lake Boga, Victoria from 1942 to 1947 and is the home of what looks to be a magnificently restored Catalina A24-30 flying boat. The museum also has the sites original secret communication bunker with communications equipment covering valve testers, Audio and Radio Frequency generators and alignment equipment. Even an ex-military American, left hand drive, Mobile radio jeep complete with anti-theft device mounted on the vehicle, notably a machine gun. Wouldnt be arguing with that little addition. With over 500 exhibits it is good to see a range of wartime treasures that have been preserved for future generations. These museums would certainly be an excellent addition to the itinerary when visiting Victoria next, thank you Peter.

Andre VK7ZAB, had a 600 W transmitter for the AM Broadcast Band, model FTX600 from SRK Electronics of Burwood Victoria. This unit is one of their many AM and FM transmitters and is also notable because they designed and manufactured from the component level up in Australia. Printed circuit boards and all products are assembled in-house. They are even environmentally compliance tested on site by their technicians.

Established in 1999, they have provided locally manufactured radio transmitters for hundreds of sites throughout Australia. This unit is rack mountable and is complimented with another rack unit featuring two independent 240 Volt power supplies, meant to be fed from two power circuits. Needless to say the covers “accidentally” fell off. The unit certainly was manufactured to a high standard and featured six mountable 100 Watt Power Output modules on the top side of the unit with provisions for another six on the underside making it the 1200 Watt model. The unit is microprocessor controlled and comes feature packed with loads of broadcast programmable and adjustable features like power out, modulation, compressor/limiter and independently programmable positive and negative peak limiting etc etc. Basically a very nice unit, even better to see it was designed and manufactured in Australia. Thank you Andre for this glimpse into the broadcast world.

Last broadcast I mentioned Andre used his Spectrum Analyser to bringing to our attention a new signal in the 206 MHz area. It was the ABC testing the new Digital Audio Broadcasting Plus service for the Launceston area, or DAB for short. Soon after hearing about the test broadcasts Phil VK7ZPD, was hot on the trail to track down any possible software capable of decoding the signal that could be run on a computer. His perseverance paid off and he came up with a programme called “wello.io”. It is suitable for a variety of operating systems and is an open source software programme for decoding DAB and DAB+ using a software defined radio (SDR). I have downloaded the latest version 2.4 which comes with an ‘Expert Mode”. This opens up all the interesting options for the service information displays. Anything from locational information and encoder method, sample rate and stream bit rate, service performance and error rates through to displays for Spectrum Analysis, Impulse Response, Constellation Diagram and MOT protocol decoded imbedded images, with MOT being station logo and track information. What more could you want? It is however very interesting to look into various aspects of this digital broadcast stream. Thank you for tracking this little gem down Phil.

Software link is included in the text version.

www.welle.io

Now to finish off, Nic VK7WW, has had another successful long distance QRP Morse Code contact. This time on 3553.7 kHz, but still using his recent transmitter project called the “Cent”, which Nic designed as a celebration of 100 years of Amateur Radio in Tasmania. Nics latest VFO add on project must have been utilised as it was no longer the original crystal locked frequency. This contact was with Mark VK6QI, who was using a remote station in Perth a couple of nights ago. This QSO spanned a distance of over 2950 Kilometres, from Legana Tasmania to Perth Western Australia. Still only using 1 Watt with a received signal report of 539 and no QSB. Thats pretty impressive QRP using one watt Nic!

Equipment pictures are available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs” for this broadcast. Now back to the house keeping.

Technical News
TETRA radio protocol found to be vulnerable - Weak encryption in emergency services radio.

Dutch security researchers have disclosed a collection of vulnerabilities in the TETRA protocol used in emergency services, military, infrastructure and other applications.

Collectively dubbed TETRA.BURST, the vulnerabilities “allow for real-time decryption, harvest-now-decrypt-later attacks, message injection, user deanonymization, or session key pinning”, the researchers from company Midnight Blue said.

The vulnerabilities are all cryptographic flaws of some kind.

Most of the vulnerabilities, the researchers wrote, affect all TETRA networks, but vendors have begun shipping firmware patches.

Some need mitigation via “compensating controls”, the authors said.

A number of the vulnerabilities are rated critical.

Some are decryption oracle attacks, because TETRAs air interface encryption keystream “relies on the network time, which is publicly broadcast in an unauthenticated manner”, the researchers said.

A capable adversary could “intercept or manipulate law enforcement and military radio communications”.

There is also a backdoor in TETRAs TEA1 algorithm, used to encrypt the air interface.

The backdoor “reduces the original 80-bit key to a key size which is trivially brute-forceable on consumer hardware in minutes,” the researchers said.

This constitutes a “full break of the cipher”, they wrote, “allowing for interception or manipulation of radio traffic."

As well as intercepting traffic, an attacker could inject traffic.

For example, if an electricity utility was using TETRA for SCADA communications, an attacker could “perform dangerous actions such as opening circuit breakers in electrical substations”.

VK Historical News
Howden Crystals

Barry McCann from Tas Maritime Radio dropped a box crystals off at the REAST Clubrooms the other day and Justin VK7TW went through them and found a couple of FT-243 holder Max Howden branded crystals.

This sparked his interest to find out more as this name is well known to many VK Amateurs. The following is sourced from the Radio Museum website.

Walter Francis Maxwell Howden (1899-1980) made the first successful, two-way amateur telegraphic shortwave radio contact between Australia and the US on November 4, 1924, followed by England 9 days later. This was from the experimental station "VK3BQ" he operated at his residence in Box Hill, Melbourne, Victoria.

In 1924, he worked as a Consulting Engineer for Corbett, Derham & Co. designing Tunaphone radios.

After a visit by Alf Treager and Dr John Flynn of the Royal Flying Doctor Service in 1930 he agreed to manufacture and supply crystals for Treager Flying doctor radios.

This was the start of his business which he operated from his home address. As business increased, he built a workshop/factory in his backyard. Initially the crystals were hand-ground and he later invested in a lapping machine. His staff were mainly family and he supplied the military with crystals during WW2.

He supplied crystals to industry and radio amateurs until he retired in the 1970s with his son taking over the business which he ran until the 1980s.

Overseas Emergency Communications
Keeping lines open

Aside from combat readiness, open communications are equally valued by experts who have wondered how resilient Taiwan's communications would be in wartime, especially after two submarine internet cables relied upon by residents of the Taiwan-held Matsu Islands were severed earlier this year.

Ham radio enthusiasts who understand the importance of communications in a war zone, such as Chinese Taipei Amateur Radio League Chairman Randson Huang, told CNA that his league has continuously invested in studying wireless communications applications.

Huang said he and his fellow radio aficionados want to promote and expand the use of wireless communication because modern day 4G and even 5G technologies would be rendered useless if cell towers were brought down during an attack.

Even when not at war, 4G and 5G cell towers are vulnerable to events such as natural disasters, league secretary-general David Kao said.

In times of emergency, Kao said radio would be the quickest way to get updates out, as was the case with wireless stations set up during Taiwan's massive September 21, 1999 earthquake and the Typhoon Morakot disaster in 2009.

Huang revealed, however, that there remain barriers to making this a widespread pastime, including that operating wireless communications technology in Taiwan needs national certification.
