RAOTC News
Broadcast

Further to that mentioned on the WIA National News, this is another reminder about the RAOTC broadcast for Monday the 4th of September 2023 at 8 pm local time; thatâ€Ös tomorrow night for those listening on Sunday.

This month features another in the series of historic broadcast repeats. It is read by Allen Doble VK3AMD who mentions a list of early VK amateurs both pre and post WW2 and incidents during that war, some witnessed by himself. Allan gives details of equipment and wavelengths used by both amateurs and the military at that time.

Detailed correspondence is aired to and from Alan Hutchins VK3HL, whom some listeners might remember.

The second part of his presentation is titled ‘Pigeons, War Herosâ€Ö. It describes the achievements and fate of these birds.

Listen at 8 pm Monday, local time, over the VK7RAA/VK7RAD state-wide network or at about 8:30pm as a telecast on VK7AX ‘Spectrum Tasmaniaâ€Ö via the BATC membersâ€Ö stream or in the Ulverstone area on 445.50MHz DATV. Audio feed is available on VK7RDR, 439.775MHz, Dazzler Range.

The date again is September 4th. Call backs will follow on both networks. Please call in if you are able; this provides the RAOTC broadcast committee with an idea of how many are listening to these broadcasts.

If you miss the off-air broadcasts you can listen to the audio file on the RAOTC website:

Thursday Night SSTV Nets

Another busy net night that saw the following participants, VK7â€Ös – EV, ZGK, ZAB, PD and KT all sharing thirty photos via the North South link.

There were various subjects like:

Murals of animals at a veterinary clinic and a patron drinking from a beer keg

A fast European train, a slow Tasmanian train, turbo prop & light aircraft and airport & rural fire fighting trucks

A penny-farthing bike, a vintage motor bike, a mirage of yellow cars and a tug boat pushing a barge loaded with another tug boat

The Low Head lighthouse and foghorn from the recent ILLW

A brightly illuminated glass coffin from Dark MOFO

A map with Australia at the top of the world

    A vintage 11 meter rig

    Pair of white tiger kittens

And a “Gud Nite†from someone not dressed for Tassie winters

A reminder that Ken VK7KRJâ€Ös and Steve VK7OOâ€Ös fully automatic 24/7 monitoring sites allow anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.

Also if you missed the net, there are archives of all SSTV nights. These photos can be seen on Kenâ€Ös 2m SSTV website as an infinitely-scrolling web page or on NTARCâ€Ös website under blogs and arranged as weekly nets.

To start on a light note, it is Fatherâ€Ös Day, so happy Fatherâ€Ös Day to all our fathers, grandfathers and possibly some great grandfathers listening this morning. Enjoy your day and I hope you get spoiled by the family.

A brief update from the Safety Communications Team for the Equine Endurance Ride held at Santarena Park, Scottsdale last weekend. The one day event went well with some of our club members starting off from Launceston before five oâ€Öclock on Saturday morning to head to Scottsdale! At least there were magnificent egg and bacon rolls plus coffee available from 6 am at the kiosk to kick start everybody. The first riders departing base at 07:00 were in the 80 km section, followed by the 40 and 20 km groups starting later in the morning. We provided the usual safety communications and rider tracking for two checkpoints. Thanks to VK7â€Ös Roger ARN, Peter KPC, Idris ZIR and Stefan ZSB at the checkpoints, with Stuart FEAT providing a welcome extra hand and voice at Ride Base with Andreâ€Ö ZAB. The day also saw Peter SP remotely logging in from Switzerland to see how things were going. Compared to the last monthâ€Ös event held at Lebrina this was a walk in the park or more accurately a walk in the forest. Good weather all the way with no “deluginous†outpouring from the heavens above or awning lifting wind gusts from below. A very pleasant day was had by all.

Now for a few quick items from the last Club Technical Night.

Lionel VK7ZLB had with him a selection of Coaxial Low Noise Pre-Amplifiers. Initially a Mini-Circuits ZF-1000 that covers from 0.1 to 1,000 MHz with a Noise Floor of 2.9dB. This unit has been in Lionelâ€Ös arsenal for over twenty years and is still functioning perfectly.

Followed by his latest acquisitions from e-bay, a Mini-Circuits ZX60 covering from 50 to 3,000 MHz. This $160 unit appears to be identical to the America version advertised at $500.

Lastly a generically labelled LNA-V1.0 module that covers from 50 to 4,000 MHz with a Noise Floor of 1.3dB. All units were constructed to a high standard and in metal enclosures. According to Lionel they all seem to out-perform his Icom IC-9700, with regards to Noise Floor!

Peter VK7ZPE had an MFJ manufactured 64 to 1 Balun that he was modifying. Evidently it was playing up during a Parks activation at Gravely Beach. The unit has a plastic case and the through panel SO239 connector was screwed into a thread tapped into the plastic case without the use of a securing nut. It also had a fairly flimsy and dodgy looking earth lug. Peter rectified the earth problem by soldering a heavy copper wire externally onto the socket and passing it through a hole he drilled into the case to make a substantial earth terminating point within the enclosure. It will be interesting to see if this gets thing going again.

Peter VK7KPC was delving into the circuit diagrams of his recently acquired 1970 Traeger Type-SSB50 Transceiver that was mentioned in a broadcast last month. He was busy testing components using his LCR meter and is confident that he will soon have it functioning and hopefully on air.

Just as a follow up, after Tuesday nightâ€Ös re-broadcast during call back, did any one hear Peter asking for anyone available for a test on 80 metres? Well it turned out he was going to test his Treagar. I had no problems receiving his transmissions in Launceston, which I know isnâ€Öt far from Evandale but Peter was putting out a clean, readable signal at my noisy location. But even better, three operators also joined in the QSO from South Tasmania. Garry VK7JGD located at Snug, Richard VK7ZBX at Tea Tree and Justin VK7TW from the Hobart area. All returning a good signal report of 5+9 from his power output of 12.5 Watts. The QSO was conducted on 3543.5 kHz as thatâ€Ös the only suitable crystal Peter has at the moment for the Treagar. Good to see Peter making excellent restoration progress.

It was great to see two new faces at Friday coffee morning this week. Josh VK3ZB and Peter VK3CMA are over from the mainland on a whirlwind visit to northern Tasmania. They are probably recognisable to anyone following the TestNet and TechNet sessions on Wednesday nights, either on air or via the Discord channel as regular Net patrons. Great to put a face to a name and we all wish you good weather for your island visit. I believe you have a 12 metre squid pole in the boot of your car, along with a rig and were heard asking about the locations of parks nearby! Josh and Peter were last seen disappearing with TechNet controller Nic, VK7WW after morning tea. At least they are in good hands and hopefully will also make a few contacts before heading back on Sunday.

As always equipment pictures are available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs†for this broadcast. Now back to the house keeping.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The Club Technical night - The next session will be on Wednesday the 6th of September and will commence at the winter time of 6.30 pm through to about 10.00 pm, at the Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea.

Phillip Smith: From Amateur Radio Operator to Creator of the Smith Chart

Phillip Smith, an amateur radio operator working at Bell Labs, devised a chart that even today can help engineers understand the behavior of transmission lines.

Phillip Smith was born in Lexington, Massachusetts, in 1905, not far from the Massachusetts Institute of Technologyâ€Ös (MIT) Lincoln Laboratory. Not only was he on the doorstep of a world-famous research university, but he also descended from a famous inventor: Eli Whitney, the creator of the revolutionary cotton gin machine. From an early age, Smith had a keen interest in radio, creating his own amateur radio station using homemade components and contributing articles to the radio section of the Boston Traveler. One thing was clear: Smith was destined to pursue a career in electrical engineering.

In 1924, Smith went to Tufts College to study electrical communications. When he wasn't studying, Smith was an electronics and mechanical hobbyist, owning and operating an amateur radio station and reconstructing motorcycles. However, it was upon graduating in 1928 with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering that he was offered a job at Bell Telephone Laboratories in the Radio Research Department. Combined with his growing interest in graphical representations of mathematical relationships, this opportunity gave him a chance to truly make his mark.

Smithâ€Ös first assignments at Bell Laboratories required him to take countless measurements of standing waves, inspiring him to develop a quick method to compute the input impedance of transmission lines. In 1931, he created his first graphical solution in the form of a rectangular chart. However, Smith recognized the limits of this chart, which could only accommodate so much data. He continued to search for ways to improve his chart, constantly refining it.

Smithâ€Ös technical work was first published in 1932 as a footnote to another article, and in the same year, he filed his first patent on a single-stub matching network. He later obtained a patent on the optimum conductor diameter ratio for a coaxial transmission line.

After enhancing his chart with a grid made up of orthogonal circles, he could finally accommodate all data from zero to infinity. And thus, the Smith chart was born. After a slow acceptance process, his article describing the chart was published in 1939. Of course, as was Smithâ€Ös way, he went on to incorporate further improvements.

In addition to constructing the Smith chart, Smith also developed charts for L-type impedance transformation circuits. He worked with Signal Corps Laboratories before and during the war, focusing on radar by designing antennas and related components. After the war, he worked on the design of FM broadcasting antennas and invented the "Cloverleaf" antenna.

Smith retired from Bell Labs after a 42-year career. During his lifetime, Smith was awarded many accolades, including his election as a Fellow of the IRE and receiving the Special Recognition Microwave Application Award from the IEEE-MIT. When he died in 1987, more than nine million copies of his chart had been sold. More than that, Smith held 21 U.S. patents and published over 35 technical papers on antennas and transmission lines during his lifetimeâ€öa huge feat in the electrical engineering community.

The Smith chart is a tool for visualizing the impedance of a transmission line and antenna system as a function of frequency. The charts can be used to improve understanding of transmission lines and how they behave from an impedance viewpoint while also helping with impedance matching.

While the Smith chart was originally developed as a useful tool for making the equations involved in transmission lines easier to manipulate, modern computers and software have made the necessity for paper charts obsolete. However, Smith charts are still widely used today and are incredibly useful for showing how RF parameters behave at one or more frequencies. In fact, most RF circuit analysis software includes a Smith chart option for displaying results. Instead of the digital era diminishing the importance of the Smith chart, it has become the ultimate background for both computer and measurement instrument displays.
