History News
Switching off the Legacy EDACS Police Radio Network

Last week saw an historic event occur in relation to the rollout of the TAS Government Radio Network (TasGRN).

<30s audio file of TasPol Alpha One Signoff>

That was a recording from the Tasmania Police Radio Roomâ€Ös final statewide broadcast before they switched off the legacy EDACS Radio Network. We have permission to use the recording.

The new TasGRN network is fully operational and is now fully encrypted and so you can no longer listen to emergency services radio traffic. As mentioned in the TasPol Alpha One Radio Network sign-off message this means “those 1000s of subscribers†can no longer listen to emergency services traffic and this provides for a more secure radio environment.

Radios also need to register on the TasGRN network before they are used and therefore the network knows all the devices currently operating on the network.

TasGRN currently services eight user organisations those being - Police, Ambulance, Fire, State Emergency Service, Parks and Wildlife, Sustainable Timbers Tasmania, Hydro Tasmania and Tas Networks. The service provider is Telstra and the equipment used is Motorola P25 Phase II and uses a combination of VHF and UHF frequencies.

There are over 7,500 users on the network, with over 2,500 vehicles with TasGRN capability and it all runs from 138 sites all around Tasmania.

Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau

The current list of cards held as at 8 September is in the email version of the broadcast..

Herman would like to remind those who are sending cards to stations based in Tasmania that they should mail them to Herman based at South Arm (QTHR) instead of to the VK Outwards Bureau.

If I am holding card(s) for you and you would like them mailed to you rather than being delivered on an opportunity basis please send me some stamps.

Herman has also found it handy when ops put the operators name of the station worked on the card.

Try it yourself, it may help an inwards QSL manager somewhere else. hihi.

If you have any questions re QSL cards, please contact Herman by email vk7bureau(at)wia.org.au

Thank you to those Amateurs who have been in contact with Herman about their QSL card(s) listing.

Thursday Night SSTV Nets

Another great net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – ZAB, OO, KT, PAK, ZGK and EK all sharing nearly thirty photos.

There were various subjects like:

Vector Network Analysers or simply called VNAs. With one built into a housing that has a selection of SMA adaptors

A silver sphere with a smiley face

    A pair of turkeys

    Advertising for Ham Radio

A series of steam, electric and diesel-electric trains

The recovery of the two tugs that were sunk when the cement carrier Goliath collided with them on 28th January 2022 in Devonport. If interest, in last weekâ€Ös SSTV net there was one of the tugs shown on a barge

Helicopters and a classic firefighting truck

A squad of new looking Nissan Bluebird police cars, Tassie Crazy Cruisers and a limited edition 2008 Mitsubishi TMR 380 supercharged car from specialists “Team Mitsubishi Ralliart†

Remember Ken VK7KRJâ€Ös and Steve VK7OOâ€Ös fully automatic 24/7 monitoring site that allows anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.

Also if you missed the net there are archives of all SSTV nights. These photos can be seen on Kenâ€Ös 2m SSTV website as an infinitely-scrolling web page or on NTARCâ€Ös website under blogs and arranged as weekly nets.

JOTA Callout to NW Amateurs

Hi NW Amateurs,

JOTA this year runs from Friday 20th to Sunday the 22nd of October 2023.

In the North West we would like to activate Paton Park behind Ulverstone, between 10am and 6pm on the Saturday only, as well setup the Scout camp near North Motton,

The site has a large hut complex, with a kitchen and toilets.

We will be utilising two rooms for HF and VHF/DMR.

A VHF Amateur station communicating on VK7RMD 2m.

A UHF Amateur station communicating on VK7RMD 70cm.

Two Short Wave Amateur stations , 1 station operating on 80/40m and the other on 20M.

A DMR Radio if an operator is available.

Fox hunts will be run by Scout leaders.

We are looking for at least 6 amateurs to help on-site on the Saturday.

In Burnie on Saturday we usually have at least 4 operators at the Burnie Scout hall, on HF VHF UHF.

We normally supply radios, antennas, dual headphones boxes so operators and Scout can listen to the radio through headphones.

If you wish to bring your own radio, that would be great.

The amateur radio operator, controls the radio, monitors the conversation, and assist the Scout to make the contacts, and fills out the JOTA logs sheets, and prompt Scouts with the JOTA talk sheet if they stumble on questions to ask.

The whole idea of the day, is the amateur operators facilitate with radios and their knowledge, to assist Scouts/Joeys/Guides, to speak to other Scouts etc around Tassie, Australia and hopefully the world.

If you are available or interested , can you please advise me, Eric VK7EV ASAP, at ericvdneut1(at)bigpond.com so we know who wants to be involved and how much we can do.

We need to advise Scouts that JOTA Paton park is going ahead.

Regards

Eric, VK7EV, JOTA Coordinator NW

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

For those of us that are wondering how our two mainland visitors got on with their whirlwind visit to Tasmania, well we are lucky enough to have an update courtesy of Nic VK7WW.

“Josh VK3ZB and Peter VK3CMA arrived in Tassie from Melbourne last Thursday afternoon. As regular members of the NTARCâ€Ös weekly “TestNet†and “TechNetâ€, they were keen to visit the morning tea session at the Clubrooms to say ‘Gâ€Ödayâ€Ö and put a face to the voices that they hear on-air, quite apart from any ‘shopping for bits for their amateur radio projectsâ€Ö! Nic VK7WW hosted them on Friday afternoon, with suggestions of locations for their portable operations for the following day, Saturday.

The weather was beautiful for their visit to Tassie. Their chosen location was 30m from the beach at Penguin, with a 12m squid pole for a vertical antenna and 50w pep on 7.130 MHz. That afternoon over 15 contacts were made into the mainland. But their station setup created a lot of interest; there were so many locals who wondered what was going on, so that Josh and Peter became Ambassadors for amateur radio, explaining what it was all about. Thanks guys!

We hope you enjoyed Tassie. It was great to see you. Thanks for visiting and 73s from NTARC. “

Thank you for the update Nic and also for extending Tasmanian hospitality to visiting fellow amateurs.

From the pictures posted on Discord they had a pretty neat set up and from the run of cables it looks suspiciously like they may have been stealing the much needed 12 Volt power from their hire car. HiHi

It was a short visit but they certainly made the most of it and came prepared.

Preparation for the trip was obvious because at that Friday morning tea they produced their ‘Mini 1300â€Ö Antenna analyser. This little test instrument covers HF, VHF, UHF and goes up to 1300MHz. It has a 4.3 inch TFT touch-screen to view the pre-set menu items covering its operational modes. For example SWR either fixed or swept, find a frequency, L/C meter, Multi SWR - suitable for multi-band antenna adjustment, RF Signal Generator, Time-Domain Reflectometer - which is more commonly referred to as TDR and is excellent for obtaining rough coaxial cable lengths plus many more functions. One mode that is very useful for field or “I am not quite close enough to read the numbers on the screen†is the Tune SWR Function. This feature uses a horizontal green bar graph and audible tone that changes in the pitch as the SWR varies. The lower the SWR, the lower the tone and bar graph level will be. A very versatile little unit that they obviously put to good use.

One last minute item, it appears that Peter VK7KPC obtained a Second Place in his section of the RSGBâ€Ös IOTA Contest for 2023. Peters participated as a Non-UK Station in the Single Operator Section and as a Non-DXpedition, QRP, 24-Hour, Non-Assisted, CW entrant. Nic your CW Net is paying off!

As always equipment and Second Place Certificate pictures are available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs†for this broadcast. Now back to the house keeping.

UPCOMING EVENTS

September Presentation Night - Cyber Threats with VK7BEN

We thank Ben Short (VK7BEN) for presenting Cyber Threats and Trends, and ways to improve your personal cyber safety.

Ben started with the usual disclaimers and then let us know a bit about himself. He went through what was a Security Operations Centre Analyst actually does and some reminiscing about threats of the past. We took a look at Cybercrime trends and what Phishing is and about Spotting the Lure to use a fishing metaphor.

Ben then went into the typical Social Engineering Scams and a bit about the latest Data Breaches and a disturbing trend relating to Phone Porting.

There was a great section on how to survive the Internet by becoming a password Ninja, using Multi-Factor Authentication, Magic Words, having a second email address, regularly patching your devices and being aware of what you share online.

Ben then showed some sandboxing sites where you can safely test suspect files, emails and URLs. Ben finished with back-ups and protecting your data and then took questions.

There is the presentation and more information available to the link on the email edition of this broadcast.

https://www.tribesmanjohn.au/infosec/

A huge thank you to Ben VK7BEN for his time and presentation.

We will be focusing on the 11 consultation questions that the ACMA is wanting feedback on. If time permits we also take a look at the latest RAOTC, AR, Lo-Key and DUBUS magazines along with much more.

We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.
