EmComm News
How Quickly Things Can Change!

This last weekâ€Ös weather has demonstrated how unexpectedly it can change, how much it can change and what can happen as a result.

Coles Bay got cut off from the outside world. Families were split, Visitors were trapped. The electricity supply was cut, but luckily the phone system stayed up. The interruption lasted just 24 hours. If it had been longer things may have been much worse.

Given that the forecast is for a torrid fire season, plus the fact that fires can and do occur anywhere, such a need for radio comms can be anywhere that communities exist.

If you had been in Coles Bay at the time, would you as an amateur been able to help by providing a radio link to the rest of the world? Do you have a mobile rig?

You may have switched vehicles recently, or have been told that you cannot install a fixed mobile rig, but how about having a case, holding a mobile rig plus a mag base, an antenna and cabling stashed in the boot for ready deployment? You might need a paper serviette to protect the duco, plus a notepad and pen for messages.

At a time of need, front up to an activated Safer Place, establish a radio link to another amateur not directly affected, and advise those in charge that you have a radio link to outside of the danger area. You might end up working simplex, or via a repeater, but once the situation is known about others will try to help.

Power lines and smoke donâ€Öt mix, phones need power, but families need to make contact. Amateurs can fill the gap.

73, Rod VK7TRF

QSL NEWS
Report - from Herman VK7HW Manager of the WIA VK7 Inwards QSL Bureau

The current list of cards held as at 22 September is in the email version of the broadcast..

Herman would like to remind those who are sending cards to stations based in Tasmania that they should mail them to Herman based at South Arm (QTHR) instead of to the VK Outwards Bureau.

If I am holding card(s) for you and you would like them mailed to you rather than being delivered on an opportunity basis please send me some stamps.

Herman has also found it handy when ops put the operators name of the station worked on the card.

Try it yourself, it may help an inwards QSL manager somewhere else. hihi.

If you have any questions re QSL cards, please contact Herman by email vk7bureau(at)wia.org.au

Thank you to those Amateurs who have been in contact with Herman about their QSL card(s) listing.

JOTA Callout to NW Amateurs

Hi NW Amateurs,

JOTA this year runs from Friday 20th to Sunday the 22nd of October 2023.

In the North West we would like to activate Paton Park behind Ulverstone, between 10am and 6pm on the Saturday only, at the well setup Scout camp, near North Motton,

The site has a large hut complex, with a kitchen and toilets.

We will be utilising two rooms for HF and VHF/DMR.

A VHF Amateur station communicating on VK7RMD 2m.

A UHF Amateur station communicating on VK7RMD 70cm.

Two Short Wave Amateur stations , 1 station operating on 80/40m and the other on 20M.

A DMR Radio if an operator is available.

Fox hunts will be run by Scout leaders.

We are looking for at least 6 amateurs to help on-site on the Saturday.

In Burnie on Saturday we usually have at least 4 operators at the Burnie Scout hall, on HF VHF UHF.

We normally supply radios, antennas, dual headphones boxes so operators and Scout can listen to the radio through headphones.

If you wish to bring your own radio, that would be great.

The amateur radio operator, controls the radio, monitors the conversation, and assist the Scout to make the contacts, and fills out the JOTA logs sheets, and prompt Scouts with the JOTA talk sheet if they stumble on questions to ask.

The whole idea of the day, is the amateur operators facilitate with radios and their knowledge, to assist Scouts/Joeys/Guides, to speak to other Scouts etc around Tassie, Australia and hopefully the world.

If you are available or interested , can you please advise me, Eric VK7EV ASAP, at ericvdneut1(at)bigpond.com so we know who wants to be involved and how much we can do.

We need to advise Scouts that JOTA Paton park is going ahead.

Regards, Eric, VK7EV, JOTA Coordinator NW

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

Some of the NTARC committee were invited by Jim Gordon VK3ZKK to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Radio Amateurs Old Timers Club or as it is more commonly known RAOTC. The event was held last Thursday via a nation-wide Zoom hook-up. The meeting was as efficient as the NTARC ones and was concluded in about half an hour. However the hook up continued for a considerable time after and it was obvious that a lot of the participantâ€Ös friendships went back a long time.

It was quite amazing to see the faces belonging to the names and call-signs that we have heard on the broadcasts and read in the OTN publication over the past decades.

One major change to the committee line-up was that Bill Roper VK3BR stepped down as Editor of the OTN magazine. If I heard correctly he had been overseeing the publication for 23 years or so! That is an amazing period of dedication to the club and also to the Amateur community. Bill certainly deserved the accolades that he received after the official part of the meeting was over.

Looking at the dozens of little participant images in the Zoom meeting, it is mind blowing to think that even in this relatively small cross section there was over a thousand years of Amateur radio experience and experiences! Think of all the stories that could be told! Seriously though, all amateurs should think about “their storyâ€. It may seem to have been normal and mundane to you, but most likely be of great interest to others. This is very evident in NTARC Technical Nights and Friday coffee morning get-togethers. I would be certain that RAOTC and other publications would be appreciative of any amateur life story contributions.

By just being part of the ZOOM meeting it was obvious where the clubs description on the website originated from, and I quote:

“The RAOTC has been in existence for well over 40 years. Its main objectives are to maintain the interest and original pioneering spirit of Amateur Radio (aka Ham Radio), honour the history and heritage of our hobby, and encourage good fellowship amongst all radio amateurs.†

Thanks Jim for the ZOOM invite and the only suggestion we can think of to improve the AGM is to end it with a monthly, or in this case yearly joke. HiHi

How many have seen the latest issue of Lo-Key, “The Journal of the VK QRP Clubâ€? Well if you have you couldnâ€Öt help but notice Nic VK7WWâ€Ös “Centâ€, 1 Watt, 80 Metre, CW transmitter emblazoned across the cover. The article takes up a substantial eight pages and covers the construction of the project that Nic designed to celebrate 100 years of Amateur radio in Tasmania, June 2023. Yet another well done to Nic.

Now continuing the CW theme, Peter VK7KPC finally received his Second Place certificate for his CW participation in the Harry Angel Memorial 80m Sprint earlier this year. One more colourful certificate to adorn the clubs “Certificate Display Bookâ€.

I wonder if Peter and any other of Nic VK7WWâ€Ös, CW students will be participating in the 78th Oceania DX competition next month. Note the CW contest is on the 14th of October and the SSB contest is on the 7th of October.

As mentioned last week Ian VK7IG made it back from his mainland trip and to the club in one piece. Ros also went to the mainland starting in Darwin for a return trip on the Ghan train. She made it back but not to the club rooms for Friday morning tea! Unfortunately Ros picked up a bug on the way back and will have to recuperate for a week. We all wish you a quick recovery.

JOTA/JOTI for 2023 volunteers to assist are needed!

The Venue is the NTARC Club rooms, which is the Rocherlea Scout Hall, Archer St, Rocherlea.

The sessions will be on Saturday the 21st of October from noon to 6pm and Sunday the 22nd of October from 10am till 3pm. Groups are planned to arrive in two hour blocks, split up and rotate through four activities.

At the Club Rooms we will need volunteers to assistance with:

The operation of each of the transceivers set up for voice chat by the participants.

Oversee the assembly of Morse code trainer kits, (no soldering required only a screw driver).

Sending and receiving each otherâ€Ös names by Morse code on the practice keys. (No, not live to air)

Plus external to the Club Rooms:

We need local contacts to chat with the participants in case we canâ€Öt link up to other Scout venues. If you are able to assist for any length of time over the two days please let Peter, VK7KPC or the club Secretary know of your availability or by e-mailing secretary(at)ntarc.net

Let us finish off with something to think about......

It has been suggested that NTARC host another club “Shack Clear-out†auction.

This one could be open to all amateursâ€Ö not just NTARC members! So have a think, do you have items that are no longer needed, are you trying to claw back some of your space, do you just want to down size and consolidate your equipment setup? If there is enough interest then we will set a date and if all goes well we may even be able to obtain the services of our previous master auctioneer Nic VK7WW to oversee the proceedings.

As always equipment pictures and certificates are available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs†for this broadcast. Now back to the house keeping.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The TestNet and TechNet session - Wednesday the 27th of September. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm…. and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will be Nic VK7WW.

Coffee Morning - held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. Why not pop in and join us for a cuppa, there is endless tea and coffee along with biscuits available for a donation.

The Club Technical night - The next session will be on Wednesday the 4th of October and will commence at the winter time of 6.30 pm through to about 10.00 pm, at the Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea.

Club General Meeting – Wednesday 11th October. Held at the NTARC Club Room, Rocherlea Scout Hall, Archer Street, Rocherlea. Meeting commences at 7:30pm.

FINALLY - A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

Thatâ€Ös all folks,

October Presentation Night - Microwave Satellite Reception with Mike VK7DMH

https://fb.me/e/3JSDJorkN

Hot on the heels of Tony VK7XTCâ€Ös fantastic weather satellite reception presentation in June 2023 we have Mike VK7DMH who has agreed to give a presentation on his very impressive homebrewed microwave satellite reception equipment.

A huge thank you to Mike who I understand has been getting some very impressive results.

See you there in the Queens Domain Clubrooms on 4th October 2023 from 7:30pm and we will be streaming and going out on RF for the presentation.

DATV Experimenter's Night

https://fb.me/e/39VVdqDCq

Last Wednesday night was an eclectic night of information from the DATV Studio. Thanks to Sean this was our first night streaming on HD and for the first time you can find both a HD and SD stream from the Youtube Recording of the night.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53qYWDx2te4

We outlined the new opportunity for non Tasmania based people to become members of REAST for a reduced rate given they are not able to attend the clubrooms.

This was particularly relevant given we have a few regular DATV Night stream watchers from ZL and the US.

https://www.reast.asn.au/membership-join/new-membership/

https://alara.org.au/alarameet/index.html

We did an ALARAMeet promo and then went into our main presentation for the night - namely a Remembrance Day Contest Post-Results Release Analysis.

We highlighted that the ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM is that there were around 1005 participants however only 237 logs submitted, including two paper logs. A total of 30,437 QSOâ€Ös filled the logs submitted.

We went through the Error Log that is included in the Contest report and the errors covered included:

    Timing being wrong

    Receive Number Error

Callsign error where it was wrong or didnâ€Öt actually exist

    Invalid mode or

    No matching contact, etc

https://www.wia.org.au/members/contests/rdcontest/

Again thanks to all who participated and submitted a log and contributed to VK7 taking out the Contest for the seventh time!

We then did a quick time travel back to 1952 with a show & tell of the 1952 Magazine - "The Mystery of Other Worlds Revealed"

Justin VK7TW highlighted some sections including Radio Astronomy and a picture of Grote Reber that has linkages to Tasmania in the 1950s.

https://www.utas.edu.au/groterebermuseum

Justin then showed a circa 1960/70s Burrough's Mainframe CPU control panel. We finished with a hint of what is in the latest DUBUS magazine.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burroughs_Large_Systems

Next Wednesday night we have a reprise of the CaribouLite 6GHz SDR along with some other interesting items and the latest RAOTC, AR, Lo-Key and DUBUS magazines.

We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube channel.

https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/live-stream/

https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/

https://www.youtube.com/c/ReastHobart/

We also go out on RF - DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition on 445.5MHz. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC.

Technical News
'Radio quiet' electronics to power the SKA-Low radio telescope

A team of researchers, engineers and technicians has developed so-called ‘SMART boxesâ€Ö to power the SKA-Low radio telescope, currently under construction at Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara, the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, in Western Australia. The SMART (Small Modular Aggregation RFoF Trunk) boxes provide electrical power to the SKA-Low telescopeâ€Ös 131,072 antennas and collect signals received from the sky to go off-site for processing.

The Engineering & Operations team at the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) designed and built the first set of 24 SMART boxes, which were 10 years in the making. Tom Booler, Program Lead for Engineering and Operations at ICRAR, said they are the only electrical devices that must be placed among the antennas, creating a challenge for the sensitive equipment.

“The SKA-Low telescope will receive exquisitely faint signals that have travelled across the universe for billions of years,†Booler said. “To detect them, the SKA-Low telescope is being built in a pristine radio quiet zone far from the interference created by modern technology.

“Itâ€Ös so radio quiet at the observatory site that the biggest potential source of interference is the electronics like ours, due to the proximity to the antennas. That meant our project had to meet the strictest radio emission requirements across the entire Australian SKA site.â€

The researchers had to source special ‘radio quietâ€Ö parts that emit minimal interference, replacing the more ‘noisyâ€Ö ones. The parts were wrapped in a specially designed case to prevent any stray radio waves from escaping and the boxes were tested at an electromagnetic test facility in South Africa.

“The ‘radio quietâ€Ö results that the ICRAR-designed SMART boxes achieved were to the highest standards in radio astronomy,†Booler said. “A mobile phone on the surface of the moon would cause more interference to the antennas than the SMART boxes that sit among them.â€

A contract to build up to 12,000 SMART boxes for the entire fit-out of the SKA-Low telescope has been awarded to AVI, a company based in Perth. AVI Managing Director Tony Routledge said his company was proud to be involved.

“Being part of the SKA project is an incredible opportunity for AVI to contribute what we have learnt over our 35 years of delivering hardened electronic systems to the defence, security and mining sectors,†Routledge said.

“Extreme temperatures, ingress protection and the low-noise requirements, coupled with the remoteness of this location offer more opportunities to learn and evolve.

“I think we are all eager to be a part of what findings may eventually be revealed by the radio telescope.â€
