SOTA News
VK7â€Ös First Mountain Goat
We believe that Stuart VK7FADZ on Wednesday 10th July 2024 became Tasmaniaâ€Ös first SOTA Mountain Goat.
Aptly, the points that got Stuart to the 1000 SOTA points needed, are believed to have been gained on VK7â€Ös highest peak - Mt Ossa at 1619m, whilst Stuart was on the Overland Track.
The other thing that makes this a superhuman effort is that Stuart has only been activating on 8 June 2020!
Congratulations to Stuart and he has laid down the challenge for the rest!

VK7 Amateur Radio News
Huge Thank You
I am not sure too many people realised that the VK7 Amateur Radio broadcast two weeks ago was Rick VK7RIâ€Ös last broadcast.
Rick VK7RI is one of our regular VK7 Amateur Radio news readers and he and partner are off to VK6 for their next adventure.
Rick started reading for the broadcast team many many years ago.
We thank Rick for all the time and effort he has put into the VK7 Amateur Radio News Broadcast and we will miss his voice on a Sunday morning.
We wish him all the luck in the world on his next adventure.
This is definitely VK7â€Ös loss and VK6â€Ös gain!
Good DX Rick.

Thursday Night SSTV Nets
Another busy net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – ZGK, DBX, NMH, ZAB, KT, FGGT, AAR, OO and TW all sharing over sixty photos.
The various subjects were:
Flowers, birds and a Tassie Devil
Cutting down a tree with a “beaver” chain saw
A KFC special
A Lego Asian shop scene
Automotive transport
Snow on Mt Wellington/kunanyi
The needs of bushrangers
Tickets are available for the Tassie Ham-E-Con
A home brew limit switch arrangement for a rotary shaft
A theatrical type face mask
Optical illusions from Escher and a see-through mirror
AI generated “dream” ham shacks and the reinterpretation of the “CB Action” magazine covers using a home PC
Surreal artwork based on portable radios
And a very young radio operator
Remember Ken VK7KRJâ€Ös and Steve VK7OOâ€Ös fully automatic 24/7 monitoring sites that allow anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.
Also if you missed the net there are archives of all SSTV nights. These photos can be seen on Kenâ€Ös and Steveâ€Ös SSTV websites or on NTARCâ€Ös website under blogs and arranged as weekly nets.
A suggested theme for next weekâ€Ös net is “pets and wildlife”.

As mentioned in last weekâ€Ös broadcast there are a few carry over items from the Technical Night.
First up was Peter VK7KPC, who brought in a battery powered temperature controlled soldering station, complete with a fine tipped detachable soldering iron. Battery powered is nothing new I hear you say, but this one has a bit of a twist to it! It is available in multiple versions to suite most 18 Volt mainstream cordless power-tool batteries. When you purchase this Australian made unit, you specify the manufacturer of the batteries that your power tools use and it will arrive ready to clip onto your chosen battery pack. It is in two parts, the main body which clips onto the battery and contains the electronics, temperature adjustment knob, digital temperature readout and holder for the soldering iron plus a plug in soldering iron. A very neat little package.
At Fridayâ€Ös morning tea Peter brought in the products of his labour, a nearly finished multi band filter from Mini-Kits. This small double sided printed circuit board contained components ranging from toroidal transformer coil wires down to small surface mounted components, all soldered using his new battery powered soldering iron. Peter certainly has obtained excellent results.
As soon as I finish penning this part of the broadcast….. itâ€Ös off to Cross-Fire-Powerâ€Ös web site to look for one compatible with my cordless tool battery type. Thank you Peter for bringing this versatile battery powered soldering station to our attention.
Link to “Cross-Fire-Power” web page is included in the text version of the broadcast: Cordless Soldering Iron | Portable Soldering Iron Station & Batteries – CrossFirePower
Ross VK7ALH, brought in a Ten-Tec Jupiter, circa 2000, that he was working on. It was quite startling to realise the difference between this and conventional analogue transceivers. The case certainly was not empty but nowhere as many modules as you would initially expect. As I was informed it was based on the previous model or version the Pegasus. The Pegasus was the first amateur radio based on the Software Defined Radio or SDR principal where radio functions were handled in firmware and the user interface was hosted on a Personal Computer. The Jupiter was basically the same transceiver but very importantly included all the front panel controls amateurs are accustomed to. It still maintained the PC interface and the ability to update software whenever available. So this was probably the first SDR amateur transceiver that was stand alone. It was manufactured to the same very high standards that Ten-Tec had obtained, but was a startling insight as to what technological innovations and progress was to bring. Thanks Ross for the chance to inspect such a transitional piece of engineering.
Did anyone guess the picture of the mystery device mentioned in last weekâ€Ös broadcast? It was brought in by Lionel VK7ZLB but had nothing to do with valve testers, hihi. Evidently it was part of the payload from a weather balloon! But as it incorporated a single thermionic valve you would be correct in assuming it was part of a very early telemetry system for a weather balloon. It would have been used decades before the ones that Eric VK7EV and fellow amateurs from NWTARC were tracking down and recovering recently. The next task is to track down any information or circuits, just for fun of course! Thanks for the mental stimulation Lionel.
As always, pictures will be available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs” for this broadcast. NTARC Blogs

July Forum Night - Contesting
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwM9XB7cjns
Firstly it was great to see Ian VK7FCIR originally from the NW along to this forum. The forum night focused on contesting in all its forms and was run a little differently with some subject matter experts kicking the night off and then we had a round table.
Martin VK7GN started with his participation in the World Radiosport Team Championship - 1996 in San Francisco with a video. We then moved to Murray VK7ZMS and Richard VK7ZBX about the VHF and above contesting with accompanying video of the field day van.
There was discussion about logging software, voice/CW keying and radio setups.
Hayden VK7HH, Garry VK7JGD, Linda VK7QP, Paul VK7PEP, Steve VK7OO, Lance VK7ZA and Justin VK7TW shared their contesting experiences in the round table.
A reminder that we have the friendly participatory Remembrance Day contest on the 17 and 18th August 2024 and preparation is the key!
Thanks to all who came along and shared their knowledge, experience, skills and funny stories. If you missed it then the video is available on the REAST YouTube Forums Playlist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2rbftJJojg
People start arriving at the night around 6pm and many bring their dinner to enjoy. The DATV studio fires up at 7:30pm with streaming on the REAST YouTube channel and RF broadcasting. While the program is happening in the DATV Studio there is much discussion, experimenting, playing, talking, drinking coffee and tea, serious cunning plan development and general amateur radio shenanigans and world problem solving!!
This week we have some great material to help you learn CW continuing on our journey with CW Academy a few weeks ago. We also take a look at the WSPR results for a long wire antenna on 30m and the manual operation of the Kenwood MAT-100 ATU and much more.
