AR Magazine

In the next edition of AR Magazine there will be a wonderful article on ALARA in VK7 and VK7 Women throughout history by Linda VK7QP.

We also have queued up for future AR Magazines a couple of interesting VK7 focused articles on Our Broadcast History from the 1920s through to the current day with lots of great photos of those involved in putting the WIA & VK7 broadcasts together and putting them to air each Sunday.

It is amazing to think that there has been a WIA VK7 broadcast in Tasmania since the 1920s!

Another article is about VK7 Wireless Pioneer Frederick “Pop” Medhurst by Justin VK7TW. This is a fascinating history of a true VK7 Pioneer of radio from the late 1800s through to the late 1940s.

Keep your eyes open for those articles over the coming months.

Thursday Night SSTV Nets

Due to a low battery voltage on Mt. Arthur there was no operational Northern repeater VK7RJG to be able to link to the Southern VK7RAF. However there was a northern photo received and transmitted directly through VK7RAF.

The net night that saw the following participants, VK7s –

ZGK, FGGT and ZAB all sharing seven photos.

There were various subjects like:

    Ornithology

Optical Illusion artworks. The three prong figure and the couple looking at each other or are they sitting on the floor

Harry Potters Platform 9¾ at Kings Crossing Station in London

A reminder that Ken VK7KRJs and Steve VK7OOs fully automatic 24/7 monitoring sites allow anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.

Also if you missed the net, there are archives of all SSTV nights. These photos can be seen on Kens 2m SSTV website as an infinitely-scrolling web page or on NTARCs website under blogs and arranged as weekly nets.

Firstly, if you are listening to this broadcast via repeater VK7RAA and its Sunday morning then this is indeed a good sign, looks like the mercy dash up Mt. Arthur by Tony VK7YBG, Peter VK7ZPE and Andre VK7ZAB on Friday payed off and the batteries are once again at an acceptable charge level to hold the repeater. NTARC werent the only ones deploying technicians on the mountain on Friday as there were two more working on the other side of the plateau with similar problems caused by the previous battering of gale force winds. They suffered similar problems, failed wind generator and insufficient solar reserves to maintain their commercial site. Thanks fellows for volunteering and band aiding the system on such an utterly abysmal Friday.

Hopefully no one turned up at the NTARC Club Rooms last Wednesday night because we had all relocated to Tramms Bistro located in “The Park on Invermay” - for the clubs yearly mid-winter social get together. We all gathered before six thirty and claimed our reserved table. There was much chattering and cheerful banter going on as we all discussed the menu before ordering. There was an excellent selection of dishes on the menu, everything from the ever popular chicken parmigiana through to Japanese Salmon Swirl, even good old scrambled eggs, something for everyone. hi-hi. Orders were taken and service was fast. The served up dishes were excellent, everyone seemed happy. For those of us that had left a bit of space for “later”, we finished off with Rocky Road or Sticky Date Pudding for desert. It may have been a social evening but much of the conversation, you guessed it….. was interspersed with radio and electronics, as always. A great time was had by all and we made our way home thoroughly satiated.

Now looking forwards towards the end of the month, specifically Saturday the 29th of July. NTARC has again been asked to provide Safety Communications for an Equine Endurance Ride, this time to be held at Lebrina. We will be providing voice communications for Ride Base and hopefully two checkpoints. Due to the events early start on Saturday, NTARC will be setting up Base and testing checkpoints for voice communications on the Friday afternoon.

As the location is a pleasant forty minute drive from Launceston why not consider coming along and putting your radio skills to good use assisting a community event. If this is your first event then you will be paired with an experienced operator so that you can quickly grasp the procedures involved and NTARCs regular general approach to these events.

If anyone would like to assist at this event then our Safety Communications Coordinator Roger, VK7ARN would appreciate hearing from you. Roger can be contacted by email at safetycomms.ntarc(at)gmail.com

UPCOMING EVENTS

The TestNet and TechNet session - Wednesday the 19th of July. TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm…. and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will be Nic VK7WW.

Coffee Morning - held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. Why not pop in and join us for a cuppa, there is endless tea and coffee along with biscuits available for a donation.

The Club Technical night - The next session will be on Wednesday the 26th of July and will commence at the new winter time of 6.30 pm. Thats a one hour earlier start and running through to about 10.00 pm, at the Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea.

FINALLY - A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

Thats all folks,

73 from Stefan, VK7ZSB, Secretary NTARC Inc.

White Rabbit devices to support Square Kilometre Array

Safran Electronics & Defense has announced it will provide more than 200 White Rabbit (WR) devices for the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO). The SKAO is building two next-generation radio telescopes that are set to revolutionise our understanding of the universe by observing the sky in unprecedented detail.

White Rabbit is a collaborative project including CERN, the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research and other partners to develop a fully deterministic Ethernet-based network for general-purpose data transfer and sub-nanosecond accuracy time transfer. It provides sub-nanosecond synchronisation accuracy, which formerly required dedicated hardwired timing systems, with the flexibility and modularity of real-time Ethernet networks.

The SKA telescopes will meanwhile allow astronomers to observe the universe over a broad range of frequencies, from low-frequency radio waves at 50 MHz up to mid-frequency waves of 15.4 GHz. The data generated by the telescopes will be used to study a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, from the formation of the first stars and galaxies to dark matter and signatures of life beyond Earth.

“The integration of White Rabbit technology with the SKA telescopes represents a crucial step in ensuring the success of this pioneering project,” said Carlos Valenzuela, Navigation & Timing, Product Manager with Safran Electronic & Defense. “White Rabbit allows users to synchronise remote devices within one billionth of a second (1 nanosecond). It will enable the telescopes to achieve the level of precision and accuracy required to generate groundbreaking scientific insights into the mysteries of the universe.”

Australia will host the SKA-Low telescope, which will have 131,072 antennas receiving low-frequency radio waves. South Africa will host the SKA-Mid telescope, comprising 197 dish antennas receiving mid-frequency radio waves.

“The SKA project has a strict timing requirement for its operation with a performance below two nanoseconds, which is not achievable by Network Time Protocol (NTP) or Precise Time Protocol (PTP) technology,” Valenzuela said. “The WR-Z [White Rabbit Z] platform is a critical solution developed through Safrans Navigation & Timing portfolio for the SKA telescopes pulse per second (PPS) distribution system. It is a new design integrating WR technology, thus enabling sub-nanosecond accuracy.”

Carlos Frias, EMEA Technical Sales Market Manager for Safran Trusted 4D, said WR-Z had been evaluated in different scenarios to demonstrate its timing performance in dynamic environment conditions fulfilling the SKA telescopes requirements for PPS distribution. It will thus enable the SKA PPS distribution system to synchronise the thousands of antennas and dishes spread across Australia and South Africa.
