Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated

www.ntarc.net

Now for something completely different - for our club. NTARC will be opening the club rooms on Wednesday the 6 th of March. Not for a normal Technical Night but for a group gathering to watch the REAST presentation on “Space Junk and Amateur Radioâ€. Rather than sit at home watching, feel free to come along and watch it on a large screen TV, in a distraction and stress free environment. With the only stress being which beverage and cake to select while watching. I know itâ€Ös not looking good to receive the DVB/T RF broadcast off air but we should be able to make do with the REAST YouTube streaming service.

Doors will be open by 7:00 pm. It will be intriguing to see how “us†as Amateurs can be of any assistance, I canâ€Öt wait to find out, see you Wednesday.

Mug Order - yes, we are talking about the white mugs for drinking out of, those that have our club logo on one side, personalised with your name and call sign on the other. We are placing another order so if you would like one then please see André at the Friday coffee mornings or at the Wednesday bi-weekly club Technical Nights. Those members who have already requested a mug, please email secretary(at)ntarc.net to

confirm order, and anyone else who wants one please specify what name is to be printed above the call sign.

The final price will be about $12 depending on the eventual quantity ordered.

Additional Discord page - Phil VK7ZPD has set up a discord page that is dedicated to Slow Scan TV or SSTV. Can be used for any SSTV experimentation. Eminently suitable for the State-wide SSTV experimentation on Thursday nights. The page is simply called “sstv-2024†it will give participants the ability to discuss problems or supply information on the images sent. An excellent idea Phil, so if you are experimenting or participating in the SSTV nights and donâ€Öt have access to NTARC Discord, please send

me an e-mail at secretary(at)ntarc.net and I will pass it on.

UPCOMING EVENTS

TestNet and TechNet session - Every Wednesday, TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7pm till 7.30pm…. and a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30pm till about 8.30pm. Your host for the evening will be Nic VK7WW.

Coffee Morning - held every Friday in the NTARC Club rooms. Time is from 10am to noon and we look forward to seeing you all there. So why not pop in and join us for a cuppa, there is endless tea and coffee along with biscuits available for a donation.

Club Room Technical night session - The next session will be on Wednesday the 28 th of February and will commence at the usual time of 6.30 pm, running through to about 10 pm, at the Club room Archer Street, Rocherlea.

Finally - A reminder to all members that if you have any items of news you would like added to our weekly roundup, no matter how trivial, then please email them to the Secretary at the following address news(at)ntarc.net all items to be received no later than 5pm on the Friday prior to the Broadcast.

Thatâ€Ös all folks,

March Presentation
Space Junk and Amateur Radio

https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/upcoming-events/?event_id1=2093

REASTâ€Ös March presentation night will be a fascinating presentation from Mars Buttfield-Addison who is a pHd candidate with UTAS and CSIRO.

Since the dawn of the space race, humanityâ€Ös ventures into space have relied heavily on radio technologies and methods. As the infrastructure in space has changed, so too has the RF environment and the infrastructure needed to support activity in spaceâ€öfrom satellite stationkeeping and collision avoidance, to space weather monitoring, to mission control for automated landers and probes. Mars Buttfield-Addison is a computer scientist working with radio telescopes at the University of Tasmania, where she is involved in the adaptation of radio telescopes for increasingly demanding and atypical tasks. In this talk, she will discuss some of the RF infrastructure and processes in use in the space industry today, what Tasmania does to contribute, and where these means fall short globallyâ€öcreating opportunities for coordinated campaigns of smaller instruments to contribute.

This presentation will be held on Wednesday night the 6th March 2024 from 7:30pm in the Queens Domain Clubrooms and it will also go out on DVB/T RF and via the REAST YouTube Channel streaming service.

A huge thank you to Mars who has agreed to come along a share.

See you there.

April Presentation - Save the Date
The History of UTC and the Leap Second

https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/upcoming-events/?event_id1=2095

REASTâ€Ös April presentation night will be a fascinating presentation from Peter Pokorny VK2EMR.

This will be a humorous presentation about how universal coordinated time (UTC) came into existence and why we need Leap Seconds.

There will also be a very timely update from WRC â€Ö23 on Leap Seconds as well.

Peter attended the World Radio Conference 2023 with Dale Hughes and is a well verses in the ITU and WRC behemoth as he has been involved many years due to his professional maritime background.

It will be held on Wednesday night the 3rd April 2024 from 7:30pm in the Queens Domain Clubrooms and it will also go out on DVB/T RF and via the REAST YouTube Channel streaming service.

This should be a great night, see you there.

DATV Experimenter's Night

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moqVQe4pvGc

Last Wednesday night we started the night with welcome to the Class Licence & new Assessor Arrangements which kicked off on Monday 19th February.

Justin VK7TW then gave a wrap up of the REAST AGM and SGM and then we moved to Rex VK7MO who clarified and confirmed our world first of a lightning scatter contact on 23cm. After further analysis of all the data - Rex and Brody now think there was only one 23cm contact that was definitely a Lightning Scatter contact.

The others were a combination of aircraft, tropo and meteor scatter across 23cm and 2m. Some of the take home messages were the WSJT-X MSK441 mode does decode aircraft scatter. If you are running 2m & 23cm do a comparison of the timing of ping on both frequencies. Rex left us with some interesting phenomenon that Brody VK3MAP experienced on 2m which they could not explain.

Rex then took us through a wonderful presentation about and article in this monthâ€Ös AR Magazine about Pioneering Women in Amateur Radio where Rex's Mum (and Dad) appear. Phyl Moncur wrote the YL Corner column for AR Magazine for many years and in one of the article wrote an article called “What is a Harmonic†which was written about Rex. Rex only became aware of the article a few years ago. Thanks Rex.

Justin VK7TW finished off with a taster of the Radiacode 103 radiation meter and a short discussion about early gaslight mantles that are impregnated with metal nitrates which used to include radioactive elements.

This week is all about radiation and a deep demonstration of the RADIACODE 103 Radiation Detector - which includes a radiation detector, dosimeter and spectrometer in the same handheld device. So if you can safely bring your radiation sources with you to the clubrooms then bring them along and we will measure and see where the radiation comes from. See you there or on the stream.

https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/live-stream/

https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/

https://www.youtube.com/c/ReastHobart/

We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube streaming channel and we also go out on RF - DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition on 445.5MHz. So, if you have a TV, Set-top box or USB DTV Dongle that you can tune and scan 445.5MHz and you can see the Queens Domain, then you have a good chance of receiving the DATV Experimenter's Night Signal. Look out for VK7OTC.

Technology News
Engineers create hack to make automotive radar 'hallucinate'

Engineers at Duke University have demonstrated a system theyâ€Öve dubbed ‘MadRadarâ€Ö for fooling automotive radar sensors into believing almost anything is possible.

The technology can hide the approach of an existing car, create a phantom car where none exists or even trick the radar into thinking a real car has quickly deviated from its actual course â€ö and it can achieve this feat in the blink of an eye, without having any prior knowledge about the specific settings of the victimâ€Ös radar.

“Without knowing much about the targeted carâ€Ös radar system, we can make a fake vehicle appear out of nowhere or make an actual vehicle disappear in real-world experiments,†said Associate Professor Miroslav Pajic, who co-led the research. “Weâ€Öre not building these systems to hurt anyone; weâ€Öre demonstrating the existing problems with current radar systems to show that we need to fundamentally change how we design them.â€

In modern cars that feature assistive and autonomous driving systems, radar is typically used to detect moving vehicles in front of and around the vehicle. It also helps to augment visual and laser-based systems to detect vehicles moving in front of or behind the car.

Because there are now so many different cars using radar on a typical highway, it is unlikely that any two vehicles will have the exact same operating parameters, even if they share a make and model. For example, they might use slightly different operating frequencies or take measurements at slightly different intervals. Because of this, previous demonstrations of radar-spoofing systems have needed to know the specific parameters being used.

“Think of it like trying to stop someone from listening to the radio,†Pajic said. “To block the signal or to hijack it with your own broadcast, youâ€Öd need to know what station they were listening to first.â€

In demonstrating MadRadar, the research team showed off the capabilities of a radar-spoofing system theyâ€Öve built that can accurately detect a carâ€Ös radar parameters in less than a quarter of a second. Once theyâ€Öve been discovered, the system can send out its own radar signals to fool the targetâ€Ös radar. Each demonstration of MadRadar was done on real-world radar systems in actual cars moving at roadway speeds, showcasing its impressive accuracy â€ö if the spoofing radar signals are even a microsecond off the mark, the fake datapoint would be misplaced by the length of a football field.

In one demonstration, MadRadar sends signals to the target car to make it perceive another car where none actually exist; this involves modifying the signalâ€Ös characteristics based on time and velocity in such a way that it mimics what a real contact would look like. In a second and much more complicated example, it fools the targetâ€Ös radar into thinking the opposite â€ö that there is no passing car when one actually does exist. It achieves this by delicately adding masking signals around the carâ€Ös true location to create a sort of bright spot that confuses the radar system.

“You have to be judicious about adding signals to the radar system, because if you simply flooded the entire field of vision, itâ€Öd immediately know something was wrong,†said David Hunt, a PhD student working in Pajicâ€Ös lab.

In a third kind of attack, the researchers mix the two approaches to make it seem as though an existing car has suddenly changed course. The researchers recommend that carmakers try randomising a radar systemâ€Ös operating parameters over time and adding safeguards to the processing algorithms to spot similar attacks.

“Imagine adaptive cruise control, which uses radar, believing that the car in front of me was speeding up, causing your own car to speed up, when in reality it wasnâ€Öt changing speed at all,†Pajic said. “If this were done at night, by the time your carâ€Ös cameras figured it out youâ€Öd be in trouble.â€

The teamâ€Ös research, set to be presented at the 2024 Network and Distributed System Security Symposium in late February, shows that manufacturers should immediately begin taking steps to better safeguard their products.

“These lessons go far beyond radar systems in cars as well,†Pajic said. “If you want to build drones that can explore dark environments, like in search and rescue or reconnaissance operations, that donâ€Öt cost thousands of dollars, radar is the way to go.â€
