Last year just after Neil Armstrong died, Sir Patrick Moore, long time
presenter of the "Sky at Night" astronomy programme, died.
Patrick's rise to prominence was probably mainly as a result of starting
just before Sputnik and continuing during all the '60s space missions and
the stuff which followed in the '70' '80s and 90s.
In the 1960s he devoted an entire programme to the comparison between the
American and Russian space programmes.
He showed the 100s of screens at Houston compared with the few in the USSR
As well as mentioning that the Russians had the first man in space, the
first Woman in space, Valentina Tyereshkova' and the first unmanned moon
landing. In fact thre were six 'Luniks' landing robot landers on the Moon
before Apollo 11.
He also mentioned how the Russians could do a hard landing with a
capsule,back where it was launched from while the US had to do a "Splash
Down" in the Pacific and use an aircraft carrier and helicopters to pick
up the crew.
I have no axes to grind. I am English, not Russian or American. My
politics don't match either country but i have been around long enough to
remember
all the above. It does not take a great brain to come to the conclusion
that the Russians were better at it than the Americans. I still remember
Trying to explain to customers why the pictures from Soviet expiditions
were so good while the US pix were so bad. How do you explain the
differences between Secam V and NTSC, without a burst added ?
Just saying that the Americans had further to go, often worked :-)
Just explaining part of my job which involved rockets would get me put in
prison for 14 years, even though we were made to scrap our Blue Steel in
favour of renting Trident and the one before it, back in the 1950s.
It is safe to say that we still rent Trident, though we make the nuclear
warheads for the US. Thes facts have been on TV, so safe enough there.
