Hi Ian and all,
Sure, the "Space Race" was purely political and America was behind because of
caution that on several occasions was thrown to the wind resulting in
disaster. You see I'm smart enough to see through the smoke and mirrors of
propaganda... like the VOA vs. Radio Moscow wars. The Soviets threw so much
money into space and the military they came up short(wave) and couldn't
replace the power supply caps in the Ukranian transmitters. Remember the
charictaristic 50Hz buzz? Interestingly the Russian ones were clean and
sounded better than the Collins 250KW units in Bethany, Ohio.
Uh, Ian, the US lunar pix were B&W which has no chroma burst, the reason why
they were inferior was purely weight conservation. If they put a 525 line
camera aboard they would never have gotten there, way too heavy in the 1960s
unlike today when cell phone video is superior to 60s TV.
You may do jail time for explaining part of your (classified) job, but if I
explained ANY of the one I had before retirement I'd be marked for death by...
Can't say that, it's not politically correct.
