Asteroid as big as Big Ben to narrowly miss Earth in close encounter
By Kate Buck

An asteroid the size of the Elizabeth Tower will pass between the Earth and moon this weekend in a close encounter just 100,000 miles away.

The space rock has been measure at around 90m, and will hurtle between us and the moon at around 17,500mph.

Its size and proximity means astronomers will have the perfect opportunity to spot the object as it hurtles through space.

With its size and speed, if it was to hit Earth, experts say it would have the ability to wipe out a small city.

While asteroids are common, Nasa has said it is rare for one to pass so close and it is likely to only happen once every 10 years.

This asteroid was only discovered last month, and has been named 2023 DZ2.

It will pass by on Saturday before returning into the darkness of space, although the same piece of rock is expected to return in 2026.

Scientists have ruled out the possibility it could strike Earth then.

The European Space Agency's planetary defence chief, Richard Moissl, said of the asteroid: "There is no chance of this 'city killer' striking Earth, but its close approach offers a great opportunity for observations."

If you want to watch the asteroid pass, then the Virtual Telescope Project will provide a live webcast.
