I think fake is too harsh a word to use here. Most of these ghosted
nodes that are not reachable are sent because sysops either have their
netrom qualities TOO HIGH or use INP3 on the internet which also boosts
qualities via rttl TOO HIGH and before you know it everyone claims they
have all nodes physically existing on their lans which we all know is not
true. The result is endless propagation of nodes which no longer exist and
the network appears to be broken to the end user.

Actually, the node "BBS" is the misconfigured node. When a node does not
have an alias before it then it is considered to be a slimetrail node. A
slimetrail node is a node which is not received through broadcast obs or
as a direct neighbor but has had connectivity to or through the node it
is listed on. Some softwares allow configurations so that the sysop may
disable allowing slimetrails on their system, some do not. Some also
will make a temporary alias such as ##temp or ##TEMP which used by themselves
are not connectable. The # as the first character is used for other softwares
who hide slimetrails to use as a trigger, and also to help hide backbone
nodes which often start with a # as a character.

Because SP2L-11 was heard here, a path to it was learned temporarily thus
a temporary alias of ##TEMP was created by the node software while the path
exists. When it no longer exists it will vanish from the node tables. INP3
neighbors or those who run netrom link qualities well above 200 on the
internet however will falsely allow this node to propagate endlessly.
I still see a node I used to run 15 years ago listed in the INP3 "cloud".

Too many will not buy the gear to run 1200 baud when they already spend a
monthly fee for 400Mbs or better internet speeds. Even EOCs here in the
states are pressured by our government to use internet not ham radio for
emergency communications - they didn't learn from Irma in Florida or
Maria in Puerto Rico - so there's little incentive anymore in reality.

With the exception of devlopment and support purposes, I agree with the above.
I also believe we should stick to open source based systems not closed source
ones. Xnet is an example of what may go bad when there's no longer support.

Junk from the internet is very easily controlled, the issue isn't with the
softwares or the transport it is with sysops who refuse to learn proper
networking. By properly adjusting one's minqual and in conjunction with
minobs (softwares vary as for specific commands) internet traffic can be
easily controlled and filtered.
I have modified the old NEDA system and as seen by my copy of JNOS it works
very well. I receive no more than 4 nodes from any internet based neighbor.
