When comparing the reliability of network connections among various
forwarding partners, I propose that we eliminate polling if there is no
traffic to forward. I have turned off polling on my side a long time ago.
My system is set to initiate contact only if there are outgoing messages to
be forwarded. This eliminates excess chattiness on the network and also
shortens the logs. AXIP wired connections should be as reliable as your
home's LAN. By practicing efficient methods, we can also then extend it
to any RF connections. Tighter procedures will make for a more efficient
network all around. Off course, those forwarding partners with shaky RF
or AXIP connections should be fewer and will allow us to focus attention
to improving their links. If you have a JNOS system like I do, then all
you have to do to turn off polling is to remove the P at the top of each
partner's stanza in your FORWARD.BBS file. To improve the timeliness of
sending out a message quickly, change your MBOX KICK to every minute. If
there is nothing to send, then no connection will be made.
