First atomic clock

Harold Lyons and his colleagues at NIST built the world’s first atomic
clock in 1949. Based on the frequency of the microwaves emitted by the
ammonia molecule, the clock was not accurate enough to be used as a
time standard, but it did prove the concept. Louis Essen at the U.K.’s
National Physical Laboratory built the first atomic clock accurate
enough to be a time standard in 1955.
