I don't know how it is at your QTH, but at the Cly Institute
there are constant interruptions. The telephone rings, someone
calls on the repeater asking for me, the XYL wants to talk about
something, my son wants something. Inevitably I get up from the
workbench and step away from what I was doing. Often those
interruptions are when I have the soldering iron on, or are
they? I can't remember? So I go back to the bench to check
to see if I left the soldering iron on. Leaving the iron
on can ruin tips and potentially be a fire hazard.

Putting a timer on the iron is one way to avoid problems.
I like the mechanical wind-up timers that you find in bathroom
applications to time the exhaust fan. The hardware stores
carry them for about 10 bucks. They aren't fancy, but they
do the job.

Just set up one of these timers in a box with a receptacle at
the workbench.

wall plug Controlled receptacle
        --]--Neutral---------------[

Its not a groundbreaking concept, but its a nice addition
to the busy workbench. One less thing you will need to worry
about while laying in bed at night. I know the iron is off.
