John et al;

Here in EastNet, we use APC UPS units on our boxes that host our nodes/bbs.
Since they're linux based, there's a daemon you can install free of charge
on most systems called apcupsd.

This combined with the communications cable not only allows the UPS to do a
proper shutdown of the server in the event of an extended power failure but
can also, with the axMail-FAX suite installed, send an email to whoever you
wish as to the fact that power has failed and the system is on UPS battery
power. This email may be sent over standard internet OR via IP over RF. We
prefer IP over RF using 44-net IPs. Works very slick especially for those
nodes at remote mountain tops where in winter weather access is slim to
none.

We're quite happy with this configuration as for those who need to keep a
log on commercial power status may easily do so with said emails as the
evidence they may need to get the power companies out to fix anything that
they may need to fix.
