Subj: Reducing acoustic noise from fans

I found that the usual fingerguard/grill covering DC muffin type fans (the sort you find in PC power supplies) causes some acoustic noise. It seems the holes and slots of the grill causes turbulence that interacts with the fan blades to make extra noise. If the fan noise is excessive (or you want more quiet) you could enclose the fan in an oversize cage, which will protect fingers. Try moving the grill away from the fan's near-field, which appears to be about 3cm from the fan blades. I also had the equipment vent holes a similar distance from the fan. Using an old PC power supply case as a cage provides such distances to the fan. You'll need to mount the fan inside the cage on a baffle with a big hole for the fan, to prevent air from circulating inside the cage around the fan. The cage does take up more room. Enough room to place a small 5V power supply (to run the 12V fan, it should run on 5V) inside, without blocking airflow.
