Subj: 'Data' modes bad for (Yaesu) radios?

Hi all,

Even though I posted the same question in some (internet) mailing lists,
I think that ham packet & pactor network is even more suitable for this:

Some members of my ham club (YU7BPQ), as well as the club president
(YU7WW) started talking that 'data' modes I use (pactor, packet, robust)
are "very bad" for the club's radios, and that if I continue working
them in the club the "radios are going to fail ... and be destroyed,
burned ..." etc.

So I wonder what is the truth when it comes to use (Yaesu) radios, such
as FT-1000MP (both Mark V, and Field), as well as FT-875, or similar?

Right now this afternoon, I am using FT-875 and it seems to work pretty
good for BBS-to-BBS operation. What I did today for this test?

At first, I wanted to lower the output power as much as possible.
Initially the power was 50 in menu 075 (RF POWER SET), I lowered it to 25W.

Then, I wanted to lower ALC because some hams have recommended having
ALC as low as possible. Initially, ALC was 50 in the menu 037 (DIG
GAIN), I lowered it to 20.

Then I called some pactor & packet stations on 20m:

Pactor communication was working with a partnering BBS for some 20 min
session. Power supply meter shows 4A current drain. The fan in the radio
works only when TX. Soon after going to RX, the fan stops. The radio is
a little bit warm, but not hot by any means on its enclosure and heat
sink. (Power supply enclosure is even colder.)

HF packet communication was also working with another partnering BBS.

Power supply meter shows 5-6A current drain. Fan in radio
works only when TX as above.

Any comment? I planned to bring that radio (FT-857) to a scientific
conference in Greece (this September), in order to promote HF packet &
pactor among the researchers. But I would not like to have any trouble
with it, nor to "burn" it as the club members claim, HI.
