Sad news just received from Professor Chris Lance WW2BSA is that APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System)
creator Bob Bruninga WB4APR is Silent Key.
Bob passed away on February 7th after a 2 year fight with cancer, as announced by his daughter,
Bruninga succumbed to cancer and the effects of COVID-19. Bruninga had announced his cancer diagnosis in 2020.
Over the years, Bob readily shared his broad knowledge of and experience with APRS,
among other topics in the amateur radio and electronics fields.
Professor Lance had the distinct pleasure of meeting him many years ago before he was a ham at one of the
ARRL Atlantic Conventions when he first introduced APRS.
APRS was developed in the late 1980s by Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, a senior research engineer at the United States Naval Academy.
Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) is an amateur radio-based system for real time digital communications.
Data can include GPS coordinates, weather station telemetry, text messages, announcements, queries, etc.
APRS data can be displayed on a map, which can show stations, objects, tracks of moving objects, weather stations,
search and rescue data, and direction finding data.
