VI5ANZAC callsign popular on the airwaves

Date : 04 / 05 / 2015

Author : Jim Linton - VK3PC

The Amateur Radio Experimenters Group (AREG) activated the commemorative
callsign VI5ANZAC from ANZAC Day until April 30, for the 100th landing
anniversary of the ANZAC force on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey during WWI.
The AREG did so in honour of the 10th Battalion,
which was raised in South Australia in August 1914.

On April 25, 1915, the 10th Battalion took part in the landing at ANZAC Cove,
coming ashore during the initial stages of the operation as part of the
covering force.
The 10th Battalion penetrated the furthest inland of any allied troops
during the initial fighting.

The AREG has reviewed all of its activity. VI5ANZAC worked a total 1,290
QSOs over 10 bands, 48 DXCC entities, 43 US States, 21 CQ Zones, and 40 IOTA.
A diverse activation included AREG members chasing DX, operated QRP,
use digital modes, and were portable from a conservation park.

The highlights were working a number of Turkish TC100-prefixed stations,
ZL100ANZAC, VK100ANZAC and all state/territory VIxANZAC stations as well.

AREG thanks the Wireless Institute of Australia for the effort in arranging
the commemorative callsigns.
Participation in the event has furthered the global friendship of Amateur Radio
and has strengthened peace through remembering the impact and
abomination of war.
The extract of bands and modes used, numbers worked, reports and photographs
appear on the AREG website available via
